Here's a fact for ya. Bishop Mitt told a single mom she'd be barred

Posted: Aug 25, 2012

she didn't sign her newborn over to the Church's adoption agency after it's birth, since Mormons think adoption is preferrable to single parenting.  He pulled rank on 23yo parishioner, Peggy Hayes, in the name of "religious counseling," during a home visit. When she dared to show her dismay, he threatened her with excommunication, which would in turn make her ineligibly for entrance past the Pearly Gates, and sentence her to an eternity of burning in he!!.

Of course, he's denied this, but after seeing Ms. Hayes in an interview, and in view of the multiple trust issues that have arisen during the campaign, I find her story to be 100% credible, especially in light of the platform up for adoption he's been excused from actually running on.

A fact? Really? Something someone might have said 30 years ago?! I'm calling bologna on this one. Mormons don't have an adoption agency. This is another story to make the Mormons out to be strange. Let's get back to the relevant issues.

No dear. This is well documented in The Real Romney - published this past February

[ In Reply To ..]
by Michael Kranish, Globe DC Bureau White House reporter under GWB. Ms Hayes just happened to be the Romneys' babysitter at the time, another fact that would tend to argue in favor of her credibility, since Ann and Mitt would NEVER trust the care of their children to just anybody, huh? It's been reported extensively by Vanity Fair, and Ms. Hayes has been interviewed by BBC (BEFORE Mitt's Magical Mystery Tour), just to mention a few of many reputable media outlets. Peggy Hayes appeared in another interview just today, as part of an investigative piece/documentary on the role faith has played in Romney's life, so this is in no way some vestigial smear campaign by any stretch of the imagination.

You can call it whatever you like but, considering how much of a role ROMNEY claims his faith has played in his life, to sit there and pretend this isn't relevant to the campaign is REAL baloney. Not only does the incident illustrate a stunning abuse of power and the broader sense of GOP/Akinesque reproductive rights policy, it adds another spectre of disdain he seems to hold for women in general, and single moms in particular.

Here's the deal. The more secretive a candidate is, the more determined the truth becomes to meet the light of day. To hide tax returns, policies, biography and other standard elements of political campaigns from public view is an open invitation to lose control of the message a candidate is trying to deliver. People will start digging and digging and digging some more until they hit paydirt, as was demonstrated just last week when Gawker revealed the Bain Capital document leaks.

It's not about knocking the Mormon faith. It's about trying to find out who in the world this guy is, whom the GOP picked to run for the highest office in the land. The vetting of an incumbent challenger is not over until the day after the election.

Wow - that was a great piece you've writen! - wheres_my_job

What I object to is the fact that we will be forced to live under CHURCH law, including NO contraceptive devices, when the state is supposed to be devoid of religion in order to respect EVERYONE'S religion.

There is a post above about Kennedy being Catholic. They were afraid to run him because they didn't want the Vatican to rule America. Obviously, that wasn't a problem with Kennedy, but it surely is a BIG problem with Ryan.

It's an agency that mainly handles adoption of infants from young LDS girls gone astray and it's doing booming business. That's abstinence teaching for you.

I have concerns about his faith.... - SK

[ In Reply To ..]
And I'd be lying if I said I didn't.

I lived amongst a huge Mormon population for a long time, so felt like I should educate myself about the religion.... Lots of research, studying and talking to people (currently in the faith and not). I was also surrounded by members of the faith on a daily basis, so became acquainted with some of the practices.

Sadly, I CAN imagine something like that being said to a young single parent by a Mormon bishop. Although I never witnessed that exact scenario, I saw things similar enough to make it believable.

This election is such a conundrum. It really does boil down to the proverbial lesser of two evils for me.

How about a little more to the story - As in the whole story

[ In Reply To ..]
First, since Mr. Romney was serving as a mormon bishop. He went to her house to offer religious counseling (which by the way all religions will do that) and encouraged her to give her child up for adoption as in the mormon faith it is preferrable than single parenting.

He never told her she would "have an eternity of burning in hell". That is what the liberal haters do. They take an incident and twist it until it meets what they think will be a good "gotcha" story.

However, nobody can verify this. My guess would be this woman does not want Romney to be president so of course she can say anything she wants, and of course the liberal media is all so eager to jump in and put words in people's mouth.

While I am no fan of Romney, and I absolutely do not like the mormon faith (my sister is mormon so I get my fill), all the articles talking about this also say "Jesus Christ of Latter Day Jerks". Then the article goes on to trash Romney and conservatives.

Now...I'm not saying it didn't happen, because my grandmother who was baptist frequently would have her minister come to the house if she missed church because she was sick and he would offer her spiritual counseling. If she was facing a situation he would give her guidance on what the church thought about certain issues. To me it looks like the mormons believe adopting your baby out rather than parenting as a single mother is preferable. I don't believe that way, but that's their belief.

How about some proof this happened. You just have a bunch of republican haters posting articles screaming in capital letters calling people names. Please don't tell me you think it okay to not do a full research and find out both sides of a story.

Check out Mormon teachings a bit closer - and you will find

[ In Reply To ..]

Latter-day Saints can face excommunication if, after being warned, they continue to publicly discuss or display problematic or provocative elements of Mormon theology.  Because disciplinary councils that can lead to excommunication are always private, the process of gathering information and the closed meetings that consider the fate of a disciplined member add to the perception of Mormon secrecy.  In other words, the subject under scrutiny is not allowed to have any input into the process.  Can you say Salem witch trials?  The LDS Church continues to use excommunication as a tool to threaten, control, discipline and expel its members.

Furthermore, the founding premise on single parenthood so-called counseling is that when a couple conceives a child outside of marriage, the consequence of that sexual relationship “affects many people.”  Excuse me, but family planning is one of the most private and intimate domains a couple shares.  Nonetheless, when unwed parents are unwilling to marry, they are "encouraged" to place  the child for adoption, preferably through LDS Social Services.

Ms. Hayes was there.  You weren't.  She knew the Romneys personally as she had been their nanny.  You've never laid eyes on them in person.  She was quite clear on what SHE felt he was doing during his so-called counseling service.  Losing her place in heaven via excommunication from LDS and the implicit fate of burning in he!! was definitely what she gathered from the encounter.

I told the whole story when I included the statement that Romney denied her account. What I didn't do is edit her words or report anything that did not come directly from her own version of the events.  The idea that you would minimize this incident or otherwise try casting aspersons on her without even having seen the interview speaks for itself.

Wow.  How dare you presume you know who she does or doesn't want to be elected? She worked for them.  She knows the Romneys personally, so its quite possible she does support his candidacy.  BTW, it's highly unlikely LDS teachings include lying one's behind off for political gain.  The only thing she really wanted was for Bishop Romney and LDS to keep their hands off HER BABY.  She was deemed good enough to take care of HIS children, but not good enough to take care of her own.  The last thing that woman felt was "encouraged."  This hypocrisy alone is off the charts.

Research to your heart's content but, all things considered, I think its time for Romney to step up to the plate and offer HIS proof about HIS versions of what happened and what didn't, and I'm not talking about this one incident.  Until he does, it will be left up to the public to draw their own conclusions based on the preponderance of the LACK of evidence.

I'm not voting for him because of his religion - I'm voting because

[ In Reply To ..]
You can talk about his religion all you want. I'll be the first to agree with you. I don't agree with the Mormon faith. But I'm not voting for him because of his religion. Just like I didn't vote for Obama because of his Muslim faith. That is not why a lot of people vote for someone. Religion is not big factor in my life. So people will not vote for someone because they are Mormon yet they will vote for someone because they are Muslim. That doesn't make sense.

I'm also not voting for Romney in particular. I am voting to get the republican party back in. The democrats have not done anything to get us out of this mess and have made things worse. My beliefs align more with republicans than democrats and as a middle income gal I've always done better under republicans.

Besides if anyone has any concerns about his religion they should understand he is not going to go around and convert every American citizen to become a Mormon. Besides, the VP is Catholic.

Also, you do know that Mormons believe in God don't you? Lets talk about important issues. The fear mongering about his religion is just so off base.
Re: "middle income gals" - wheres_my_job

I don't believe "middle income" women have done better when Republicans are in power. House Republicans especially have been stalling and obstructing the entire duration of Obama's presidency - whatever economic ills we have because of Obama's policies, we have to also blame House Republicans for as well. They have been in the driver's seat on so many issues - because OBAMA allowed them to be. And where has that gotten us?

how it plays out in the political arena. Whether he's wearing his Bishop's mitre and majic underwear, or his Armani suit and flag pin on his lapel, it's all the same poop. The more I read about his bio, the scarier it gets. The guy is a real control freak who is virtually bound by ritual and shrouded in secrecy. These traits are obviously not in his genes, judging from how different he is from his dad, so I am left to conclude it arises out of the religion whose tenets he claims he holds so dear.

Regardless, he is monumentally ill-equipped to assume a leadership role outside the world of vulture capitalism, in much the same way we saw how impossible it was for Governor Pompadour to leave his Lone Star "home country" and venture out into the big, bad world of DC politics.

[ In Reply To ..]
I mentioned Romney's religion and I mentioned Obama's religion AND I mentioned Ryan's religion. I also mentioned the name of God in my post. There was nothing fear mongering about anything that I wrote. So what if Romney's a Mormon, so what if Obama's a Muslim, so what if Ryan is a Catholic. Who cares! All of them do not use their religion when it comes to making decisions. That means ALL of them.

The reason why I mentioned all of their religions was to get my point across. Not everyone cares about their religion or the fear mongering posted about Mormons and ooooh be careful, don't vote for the Mormon he'll do this or that to you. Waaaa, waaaa, waaaa. I could care less of someone is Mormon, Catholic, Buddist, Baptist, Muslim, Hindu, Wicca, Methodist, etc, etc, etc. Get my point? I don't care. I don't vote for someone based on their religion. Couldn't you figure that out? It was a pretty simple message. I guess you like the fear mongering of pointing out he's a mormon and treating them as though they are devil worshippers.

So once again, here is my point. I don't care what religion he is. I don't vote or not vote for someone based on what religion they are. Get it?
