My health insurance costs more than my tax bill

Posted: Apr 14, 2011

I added up my federal, state, and property taxes.  If I was paying the full cost of my health insurance (employer shares cost), my taxes would be about $3,000 LESS than the cost of my health insurance.  I get a of a lot more for my tax dollars than I do from my health iinsurance.   But, I am so glad I am paying all that so the insurance CEOs can afford gas, car payments, and nice vacations.

;

That is because there are other people paying more - in taxes than you are

[ In Reply To ..]
who are footing the bill for the return that you and others receive. The money has to come from somewhere. It also comes from the massive debt that we are heaping on future generations because we feel the need to pay for everyone's everything. Tax dollars go to fund cell phones for people who cannot afford them. That is ridiculous, yet people still scream like wounded animals, anytime someone mentions cutting back on entitlements. I am fine with helping poor people get food, but I honestly think that while they eat on my dime, they should live like poor people. Not everyone needs cell phones and fast food and a car. They certainly don't need it if someone else has to pay for it.

Hmmm. No. - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Let's see. I paid about 16% and Warren Buffett paid about 17%. The point is that health insurance is a rip off. By the way, you can get a trac cell phone cheaper than you can get a land line. And yes, if you are looking for a job, I think a cell phone and a car might be very helpful.

But Warren Buffet's 17% is a heck of a lot more than your - 16%, so, hmmm. Yes.

[ In Reply To ..]
The point is that health insurance is a rip off until it pays for your very expensive health care needs. People think it is a rip-off, right up until they need it, then they want to start it up without having been part of it to begin with and ask the government to force insurers to cover their preexisting conditions. We are a give-me-something-for-nothing type of society and it simply isn't working anymore.
When Warren Buffet pays his %, our country gets more resources than when I pay my equal % - so I want him to pay his fair share
[ In Reply To ..]
A multi-millionaire's percentage share makes a BIG difference to our country. I want their participation just as I continue to pay my own percentage share. If I paid 50% of my income it wouldn't make a dent. I couldn't pay for one crumbling bridge or highway. wouldn't have food, shelter or clothing. If a multi-millionaire paid 50%, he would still be doing fine. No meals lost. Plenty of vacation villas and yachts. No problem with health coverage.

My share is not worth much in the whole scheme of things. I'm still doing it though, because it's the right thing to do. I expect the big guys to pay their fair share as well.
You said he paid 17%. - Am I missing something?
[ In Reply To ..]
Are you saying he should pay 50%? I think that he has paid more than his fair share. Why is it that people think that others should be punished for making more money than they do. Warren Buffet doesn't owe you anything.
Actually I don't know what the % is for his tax bracket---not the OP--- - but even 1% of his is more helpful than 50% of min
[ In Reply To ..]
It doesn't take much of his fair share to make a big difference in our nation's infrastructure. Mine might pay for a few bricks. The big guys really do have to pay their fair share or the rest of us can't support them and us too. They use these roads and bridges. All that we have is at their disposal too. They need to help out a little.
And they do. They pay far more than their - "fair share."
[ In Reply To ..]
We use the infrastructure, as well. Why should all of the burden fall on those who earn more than we do? Notice, I used the word "earn." It seems that many on this board think that they are given that money for nothing.
We're paying our fair share for the use of the infrastructure - but many of them are not
[ In Reply To ..]
All of the burden fall on the rich? Give me a break! Are you hallucinating?

What do you think a person "did" to earn 6 billion dollars/year? Why should loopholes allow that person not to help out a little.
What part of far more of their dollars go into taxes - than do yours do you not get?
[ In Reply To ..]
I am quite sure that Warren Buffet pays more in taxes per year than I make. Why do you think that more of his hard earned dollars should go to taxes? Does he not already pay FAR more than you and I combined? And, yes, he earns his money. Just because he earns more than you or I does not mean that it is not earned. I would bet you would have a whole different perspective if you were the rich one.

I agree with you. Health insurace is a rip off. - We have to do better and we can

[ In Reply To ..]
The health insurance system we have right now is horrible. Private insurance has abused its power. We can and we will do better in this country.
Thank you for getting the point - Now if a few others . . .
[ In Reply To ..]
would understand that the cost of health care was going up so fast (before the Affordable Health Care Act) and would continue to do so without it. Big insurance is much bigger than big government--for nothing.
Health care costs are still going up... - and will continue to
[ In Reply To ..]
even with "Affordable" health care. Unless you control those costs, you will have the same thing in a few years. Private insurors have to raise premiums to cover costs, as does any business. You do not stay in business if you are putting out more than you are taking in, unless of course you are the Obama administration, where you can run 14 trillion dollars in the hole and still pay out.

AHEM.

My family has a small business and I was so happy to pay more taxes - before the tax cuts because we made more money

[ In Reply To ..]
Our family business made money hand-over-fist for years, until the tax cuts. I personally was very happy to pay those taxes. We hired more people. I smiled all the way to the bank. After the tax cuts, we saw our own profits go down. We had to let some people go. I don't enjoy going to the bank now. I would like to go back to the way it was during the Clinton years, economically. The trickle-down theory doesn't work for individuals and it doesn't work for small business like my family business.

Exactly! I didn't mind the taxes back then - I was happy I was making money

[ In Reply To ..]
Now, we are down to very few "luxuries". I really don't have any where else to cut--I guess I am now part of the working poor. Yay! No lifeline for me if I need it, though.

Note to poster....if you want to pay more taxes - feel free. The government

[ In Reply To ..]
will take all you want to give and then some. Write a check to the Treasury. You must be doing something wrong if paying less in taxes caused you to lay people off. Why would you paying less in taxes cause your profits to go down?

Sounds like something is rotten in Denmark. lol.

Well, if my expenses went down and my - profit went down at the
[ In Reply To ..]
same time I would find a way to afford one. Seriously. Because something is wrong when a business' expenses go down and profit does not go UP or at least stay the same. ahem.
That's where you are wrong. Our customers don't have jobs and can no longer pay us - Jobs were lost after those tax cuts
[ In Reply To ..]
I wish it hadn't worked that way. I would be thrilled to say that trickle-down worked, but it didn't. Nothing trickled down to my customers and in fact, they lost income and many lost jobs. Their loss is mine. Those at the top 1% didn't lose much. If only I had a business that sold the things that rich people buy. Wish I had stock in Tiffany's.
Please explain to me how giving a tax cut - caused your customers
[ In Reply To ..]
lose their jobs. If they got a tax cut, their income went up, not down.

At this point...don't believe a word you are saying because it makes no sense.

The economy slowed down and continued to deteriorate - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
States started having to raise taxes because they lost funding, roads and bridges started crumbling with no money for repair and maintenance. In my state people were killed because infrastructure deteriorated so badly.
How come those things were fixed under - multiple Democrat
[ In Reply To ..]
administrations BEFORE the Bush tax cuts? You saying all that deterioration happened during the Bush admin but BEFORE the tax cuts?

Please just stop with the creative story telling.

The "Trickle-Down" only trickles down through the top 1% - Ready to go back to the Clinton Economy

[ In Reply To ..]
I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm hurting right now. Then we have the thought of losing our support that we've depended on being there for us. That's just not acceptable. I don't want to make this a one party against another discussion, but there are people who have always wanted to get rid of Medicare. This is their big play to do it. We just can't let them do it. This is too important to us and our families.

Guess the "back to the Clinton economy" - memo went out.

[ In Reply To ..]
you can always tell when that happens. lol.
I didn't see any such memo. I just posted my thoughts - and they are my own thoughts
[ In Reply To ..]
If others have posted the same, that's fine. Regardless, those are my thoughts and have been for a very long time.

Did you notice that when they "cut" taxes, state taxes went up? - I did

[ In Reply To ..]
When those tax cuts came in, I actually lost money because the state lost funding and we had to make it up plus some. It wasn't a good deal for me.

State cuts get passed to the cities and counties - Corporations and big shots don't pay much locally.

This is another one (same one?) trying to get you to take the bait. This is just a bunch of hooey.

Common sense rules on this one - "I personally was very happy to pay those taxes." ROFL

Health Insurance Is A Poor Measure Of Health Care.Sep 14, 2011
On Tuesday, the Census Bureau released its annual report on health insurance coverage in the United States. News media widely misconstrued the data and presented the problems facing the nation's health care system through a distorted lens. Many major news outlets made a basic error when reporting on the Census Bureau study. The Los Angeles Times wrote that "the number of Americans with no health insurance rose in 2010 to 49.9 million from 49 million the year before." But the figure c ...

Big Jump Seen In Health Costs For Employees Oct 14, 2009
As companies begin unveiling their workplace benefits for next year, many employees are learning they will have to dig even deeper into their pockets for health coverage. Such price increases have become a fact of life during open-enrollment season, when workers sign up for their health plans. But the jump is expected to be steeper in 2010 than this year, as employers struggle with the impact of the recession and continually rising insurance costs. Employees will pay $4,023 on average in premiu ...

Health Care Costs RiseSep 12, 2012
While annual health care premiums for job-based family plans rose a seemingly respectable 4 percent this year, premiums averaged $15,745, with employees picking up more than $4,300 of that tab, according to an annual employer survey released Sept. 11.  According to an Associated Press report, the costs are a reminder that the U.S.’s struggle with unaffordable medical care is still significant.  Overall, "it's historically a very moderate increase in premiums," said Drew Al ...

For the past year and a half I have been sans health insurance.  Fortunately, I only have a couple of prescriptions that I take on an intermittent basis, and even those are generics.  Walgreen's has a "Savings Club" for those without insurance.  Normally enrollment costs $15 for a year, but this month only they have reduced it to $5 so I signed up.
