Good doings in Ohio: GOP Governor Kasich accepted the

Posted: Oct 23, 2013

of course, are outraged, but very conservative Mr. Kasich, who used an "administrative maneuver" to accomplish this, says it's a matter of both Christian compassion, as well as "cool economic practicality." Seemingly Mr. Kasich does not plan to run for President in 2014. :)

This will be very big for some Ohioans, and irrelevant for others of course. Hopefully those interested will consider finding out what their new premium and coverages would be either in in person or by phone...

Governors are choosing to expand Medicaid because it means federal dollars. Federal income taxes will be going up substantially to support ACA and the states have decided that they should get some of that money back to pay for health care within their states. Simple economics......

Right. Plus, lost business from people who don't seek care - means lost profits for hospitals and insurance

[ In Reply To ..]
companies. With the expectation of higher costs and lower profits in red states, they are pressuring those governments to accept the Medicaid expansion.

No presidential race in 2014 :) - just sayin

[ In Reply To ..]
This means that some who would qualify for medicaid instead of regular insurance can now get it? I am not up to speed on this...

Whoops, right. :) As for the healthcare gap/Medicaid thing, - sm

when the Obamacare law was passed, people above a certain income level were expected to buy free-market insurance on the marketplaces/exchanges that would be set up. For people who were too poor to buy insurance through the exchanges but had not qualified for Medicaid, it required all states to expand Medicaid coverage (initially 100% federally reimbursed) to them--to fill this gap.

Who qualifies under state Medicaid programs varies widely; some states allocate very little money and also do their best to disqualify people who apply.

In any case, there were qualification gaps of varying sizes among states that would be filled in by the Medicaid expansion so everyone could get covered, usually largest in states with conservative governmenets.

Unfortunately for their residents, when the Supreme Court upheld Obamacare, it struck down one provision -- this one. States don't have to take the federal Medicaid expansion to cover these people. Half the states refused it, mostly because after 3 years of being reimbursed 100% by the taxpayers of other states for taking care of their people, federal reimbursement decreases to 90 percent over several years. They didn't want to pay that 10% eventually, so they decided, basically, to let their residents "eat cake" instead and refused the expansion.

When you hear interviews of people on TV, most employed, many still young, who thought they were finally going to be able to have insurance coverage, then discovered they couldn't when they tried to enroll, this is what's happening. People poorer get covered. People better off get covered. People in states that adopted the Medicaid expansion get covered. But not them.

So Kasich relented? nm - thanks for the information!

The balance has tipped, at least. Now, people in 26 states WITH, - those in remaining 24 without. Plus,

[ In Reply To ..]
two of the 24 without, Florida and Pennsylvania, rejected it but were said to be possibilities for the future.

Both states, having rejected 100% federal reimbursement of Medicaid expansion, expect to get billions in additionanl federal money to be used "their" way to prop up their current healthcare practices.

I don't know about Pennsylvania, but we have a home in Florida, and healthcare access there under Florida's very poor leadership is among the worst in the nation.

It'll be interesting to see how long until media take - note of people moving to "with" states

to get desperately needed medical care. I lived in California for decades while people refugeed there from other states to get jobs, needed services - especially medical care or special programs for their children, or just the chance to sleep under shrubs in a warm climate.

Unfortunately, although there's no residency requirement for the landscaping along freeway embankments, residency for medical services in most places is at least a year and can be much longer.

If not for that, I suspect we'd already be hearing of this person or that who was looking into moving, hearing about it on TV, etc. That doesn't mean that some who suspect that moving might just end up saving their lives, or just everything they've worked for all their lives, haven't already started planning.

This is probably why, under Obamacare, my - premiums will double in OH.

[ In Reply To ..]
The AFFORDABLE Care Act is anything but! I will likely have to go without any insurance while my taxes support the new people on Medicaid. This country is totally twisted, and the middle class might soon join the poor. Also, you realize the expansion of Medicaid is not really a "Good doing".. it only means more people are becoming poorer... sad.

Well, at least you can look forward to being proved - right then. nm

Have you actually checked this? or are you like - those people on Hannity

[ In Reply To ..]
Who claimed their premiums were going up, they were cut from insurance, etc. ad nauseum, when in reality they had not even bothered to try and refused to even look at Obamacare?

I find it very hard to believe anyone in our job's premiums would go up. You need to realize that the Heritage Foundation's scary table is incorrect in that it does NOT include the subsidies.

Heads up, doctors don't have to accept Medicaid - or Medicare patients. nm

Partially true. SOME are rolling in bucks from very - lucrative practices and have that

luxury of turning away patients who can't pay inflated fees. Most do not, and IMO that's as it should be.

People whose goal is the amassing of personal fortunes should start a kitchen remodeling business or become salesmen for medical device manufacturers, not go into medicine.

I'm sure I'm not the only one here who's experienced physicians who are about as caring and interested in their patients as a salesman who's just realized a browser can't afford his product.

Because Voting In Ohio Just Isn't Hard Enough..smAug 10, 2012
Ohio voting just got a little harder, not because early voting has been cut down, and not because of new ID restrictions. That's right. Republicans are doing everything in their power to ensure a win in Ohio. The latest tactic works on a county by county basis. County by county it is decided whether or not to extend hours at the voting sites. Each county has a commission comprised of two dems and two pubs. You would think this would be a good thing to extend hours in this state right? ...
