Heroin epidemic in Ohio and Kentucky

Posted: Jun 19, 2017

Three young males died this year in their early 20s in separate incidents.  I know their families.  They came from good homes, had a lot of promise.  They each reportedly got started on pain medication and when prescriptions were not renewed went out on the street to get other drugs.

I watched a heroin addict interviewed and she said that even though they know this drug going around now, heroin laced with fentanyl, can kill you, she would seek it out because she wanted that high that regular heroin no longer gave her.

Is this epidemic limited to Ohio/Kentucky area or widespread?  Three families are left with totally broken hearts and wondering what they could have done wrong or differently.

Do you know an addict?

Epidemic is happening across the country. - Not limited to certain states.

All walks of life. Very sad indeed.

Unfortunately, the Appalachian region (Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky) is being hit particularly hard by this issue. I have a cousin who is a nurse in Toledo, and I have one aunt in southeastern Ohio, and two aunts that live right across the border in northeastern Kentucky. Apparently, the already depressed economy in the Appalachian area has contributed to this devastating epidemic. And you are exactly right, this is hitting all walks of life. It's heartbreaking. I read somewhere that more people are dying from the opioid epidemic than from auto accidents or from HIV/AIDS.

Heroin - Ohio

I live in Northwest Ohio. Ohio is the number 1 state in the country with leading heroin overdoses and deaths. It is just awful here. In one county they had to rent a refrigeration unit for the bodies because they ran out of room because of the heroin OD deaths. My son said up in town in the area we live in, you can find heroin in a minute. This is a very small village of 3000 people. It just makes me sick and very sad.

Just saw on Today Show, Dayton Ohio - is #1 in OD in the US

‘Mass-Casualty Event’: Ohio County Now Tops U.S. in Overdose Deaths

DAYTON, Ohio — Officials in Montgomery County, Ohio, blame America's opioid crisis for an ignoble title: the overdose capital of America.

"We're on a pace to have 800 people die this year due to overdose in our county," Sheriff Phil Plummer told NBC News. "Per capita, we're Number 1 in the nation in overdose deaths."

Overdoses are the leading cause of death for Americans under 50 — they now claim more lives than car crashes, gun deaths and the AIDS virus did at their peaks.

The video on the link is SHOCKING. - Unbelievable morgue pile-up of overdose victims

I can't imagine what it must be like to be so addicted you risk your life for the high and buy street drugs from strangers and you have no idea what is in them.

This is so sad.

My Nephew Died - Of Heroin/fentanyl

[ In Reply To ..]
My nephew was 30 when he died. He lived in New Jersey. The heroin was laced with fentanyl. There were no needle marks on him (there was a full autopsy), so it can even kill without shooting it.

Sorry for your loss. - I thought heroin required needles.

[ In Reply To ..]
They say the heroin laced with fentanyl is coming from Mexican drug cartels.

Thank you - see msg

Thank you for your condolences. Heroin can be snorted or smoked, but most progress to injections because it enters the system quicker that way. He had been addicted to pain pills for years, then progressed to heroin. I'm sure it was only a matter of time before he started shooting it.

I'm very sorry. - nm

I always like to hear what constituents have to say about their senators or other public officials running for higher office. Are there any MTs from Kentucky out there who have any personal knowledge or stories they can share? Is Rand Paul well liked in your state? The impact of dissolving the ACA will be far reaching everywhere, jobs lost.  I wish we could come together as Americans and just begin fixing the more glaring deficiencies in the program we already have.  I think a public option would be a good start.  This should have been in the original bill but politics and the insurance lobbyists got in the way.  Ultimately, single-payer like the rest of the civilized world is my preference. ...

Because Voting In Ohio Just Isn't Hard Enough..smAug 10, 2012
Ohio voting just got a little harder, not because early voting has been cut down, and not because of new ID restrictions. That's right. Republicans are doing everything in their power to ensure a win in Ohio. The latest tactic works on a county by county basis. County by county it is decided whether or not to extend hours at the voting sites. Each county has a commission comprised of two dems and two pubs. You would think this would be a good thing to extend hours in this state right? ...
