GOP vote rigging and gerrymander schemes on steroids coming out of

Posted: Jan 22, 2013

The GOP's response to demographic changes that delivered two presidential election losses to their doorstep is not to undergo policy transplants or institute changes that would appeal to minority ethnic and racial groups and women.  Nosiree.  They just want to skip over all that riff-raff and folderol and go straight for the jugular with sweeping election rules changes that fly in the face of the concept of democratic process.  In PA, it's an end-pass around the electoral college, in a scheme that defies the most elementary tenets of that system that is based on proportionate/per capita assignment of electoral votes to population-dense counties.  It would essentially eliminate ECV allocation by states as a whole and replace it with one based on Congressional districts.

Of no small consequence here is the reality that the majority of a state populations reside in the regional urban counties while the most sparsely populated areas cover dozens and dozens of more counties in rural areas.  Under this power grab, a presidential candidate could easily garner, for example, a 5-to-7-point margin of popular vote, but receive a very small share of the electoral vote totals.  In the case of PA, Obama got a 5-plus margin of the state's popular vote, but he would have only received 7 ECVs based on Congressional districts while the national popular vote loser would have gotten the remaining 13 ECVs.

Meanwhile, Congressional district gerrymandering is alive in well in VA.  While Senator Henry Marsh D-VA was in DC attending the inauguration, the GOP Senate rammed through new maps drawn along party lines by a 20-19 vote.  Marsh, of course, would have cast a nay vote, and Lt Governor Bill Bolling, who was also not present, would have cast a negative tie-breaking vote.  Though Governor McConnell expressed his disapproval of the sneaky under-the-radar tactics, he has stopped short of saying he will veto the bill.

This blatent GOP vote-rigging is WAY beyond the "shenanigans" category.  It's beyond the pale and absolutely unacceptable.

This is so outrageous it almost makes me want to cry.

"At the end of this wild day, the “Senate adjourned in memory or (sic) General Thomas J. ‘Stonewall’ Jackson,” according to the minutes of the session. Jan. 21 is the Confederate general’s birthday."

There are several other states with Republican Congress/Governor who are starting to put the wheels in motion as well.

What outrages me is the voter fraud committed on the left and not a word...silence from the left. As if by ignoring it it will go away. Voter fraud is an issue during every election. It is not dominated by one side or the other. Are you as outraged that the people who voted (by machine) for Romney went for Obama instead. Probably not.

So you posted a personal opinion (hate opinion at that) piece. This "blogger" needs to wake up and have a few things explained to him.

Yes, the republican would like to be in control next election, just like the democrats want it. Will they do things that are not "fair". I'm sure they will, just like the democrats do.

This is the dangerous thing with bloggers like him. He writes stuff and the hateful will embrace it if its a hate message towards republicans.

Sorry, gonna pass on this bloggers opinion.

"Left" voter fraud is a massive lie--Period. That some people - look at several years of right-wing vote tampering

[ In Reply To ..]
reported on national TV through those years for all to see, and somehow magically convince themselves that the left wing stole the election for President Obama is not just bizarrely dishonest, it's stupid. The entire country knows different; yammering at themselves won't convince anyone else, but continuing the same behaviors that lost this election is going to lose future elections too.

The right wing lost this general election because it so richly deserved to lose it. America came out in force and stood in lines all day if necessary to protect themselves from attempts to block their vote. How could anyone think people who stood in line for long hours last time are going to forget why they had to?

But, the right wing, completely unrepentant, is still at it. Try, try again. Immmoral, amoral, un-American, antirepublican, corrupt, hypocritical, clueless--contemptuous of people they believe will go back to their TVs and just forget. They won't.

The vote tamperers may subvert some races, but both short and long-term they'd better get to losing--as the consequence of their own actions. We all have their number now, including the MORE THAN 2/3 OF ALL CONSERVATIVES who refuse to be associated with the GOP. We're angry and disgusted, and we won't forget.

The piece on the editor's blog described facts - not personal opinions - not "hate" opinions. I just don't see how you are coming up with this. The only one who "needs to wake up and have a few things explained" is you:

Redistricting is more than not just "not fair" - it is often found to be illegal.

Redistricting (gerrymandering) is a serious issue. "Surprise" redistricting is malfeasance.

Redistricting has nothing whatsoever to do with voter fraud. It has to do with redrawing congressional districts in order to stack the deck in favor of one party or another.

Stephen Colbert assesses the GOP’s electoral vote gambit (video) - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Last week, we wrote about the GOP push in some of the states that President Obama won to award electoral votes by congressional district in future presidential elections. The action would give Republicans a better chance of winning those elections.

Comedy Central’s Stephen Colbert weighed in on Tuesday’s “Colbert Report”: “It’s a win-win,” Colbert said in his regular segment, “The Word.” “Except for the guy who won,” said the text on screen as Colbert spoke. Colbert concluded: “I say do it Republicans. … You must listen to these voters, and then make sure that they cannot be heard on Election Day.”

They are beckoning back to the Civil War, closing session to commemorate an advocate of slavery, a man who fought and died to protect and defend slavery.

And thus will he cripple, perhaps permanently, a perennial political opponent. If Gov. Walker succeeds, there will be no organized voice to oppose hi ...
