What, exactly, are Fred Phelps' stances that one would consider to represent left-wing views?

The only things I've ever heard of him supporting or being connected with are hate/anger toward gays, insane religious ramblings, and his own right to free speech. Would love to know which left wing ideas he espouses!

If you're going to call them a left wing group, I'd be interested in knowing which of their beliefs you would say are left wing (or even moderate or liberal, for that matter)? Is he for equal rights for all races, creeds, colors, and sexual orientation? Women's rights? Pro-choice? Unions? National healthcare? Pray tell....how do you categorize him as "left wing"?

Note that neither of the major Baptist denominations owns Phelps's group, which is well to the right even of both. Both have disavowed any connection, and so has Phelps's group, which describes itself as distinctly different "primitive Baptists."

is a democrat, has been for a long long time, and has run for office as a democrat. This combined with his support/fundraising for Al Gore back in the '80s makes the RW universe salivate, and they can't help but try and make a connection between WBC and liberals and/or democrats.

Now, keep in mind that my info is off the top if my head from what I've read/watched about WBC over the years, so I might be wrong here, but it's a place to start if you want to look into it. Just took a quick break from work.

Also keep in mind that Phelps is nuts... just as nuts as hinting that Phelps being democrat somehow means that his hate speech represents liberals in any way.

based on what Phelps perceived to be an anti-gay stance Gore took back in 1984 in his opposition to a formal declaration of a separate gay bill of rights. Phelps went on to denounce Gore as a "famous fag pimp" in 1996 and WBC picketed the inauguration ball in 1997. BTW, Gore obviously has evolved a bit since the mid-80s, as he now supports same-sex marriage.

Phelps also dabbled in "civil rights" activism long ago, but he's been at doing his religious schtick for decades now, and compare liberal action to his antigay harrassment at military funerals.

No telling how much of his own shpiel he buys. He may just sell whatever brought him followers. He's not Pat Robertson, but there are a lot of not-so-talented authoritarian leaders making a living out of exploiting dingdongs who need someone to follow. Supposedly his church has about 40 members now, enough to massage an ego.

Three unsuccessful bids for governor got him a whopping 15% of the vote in 1990, 1994 and 1998. In 1992, he could not advance beyond the primaries in his US senate race, as was the case when seeking the Topeka mayor's seat in 1993 and 1997. Even HE finally got the message after these repeated stinging rejections. There is no place for him in the party, which would help explain how he ended up on the extreme fringes of the right, exactly where he belongs.

on how he ended up on the extreme fringes of the right is untrue. He worked for years as an organizer for the Democratic party. He housed campaign workers for Al Gore's first presidential run; in 1989, his eldest son, Fred Jr., hosted a fundraiser for Gore's Senate campaign at his home.

He ran in the primary for Governor in 1990; ran for U.S. Senate in 1992; ran in the primary for Governor in 1994; and ran in the primary for Governor in 1998, all as a Democrat.

He IS a Democrat and always has been, whether he is disowned by the Democrats or not. You just can't take his affiliation with the Democratic party away from him just because he is a hate monger. Doesn't work that way.

BTW, he still calls himself a Democrat, refusing to change just because his party has and as of 12/21/2012, he is still an avowed Democrat.
