I'm trying to think of five utterances of Barack Obama, from his campaign in 2008 to the present, that have been truthful. So far, I'm coming up short but I'll keep trying.
Meanwhile, someone is telling it exactly like it is - and each time the howls from the left get louder and louder.
Me, I wonder how the American experiment flew off the rails - and I think I have some idea.
The American experiment has always rested on one basic assumption, namely that citizens would make informed decisions at the polls. That the people could be counted on to do the right thing, meaning what was best for the country.
Not "the party thing".
Not "the what's-in-it-for-me thing".
Not "the gimme-gimme" thing".
Not based on "feelings", but facts.
Able to discern the truth, and distinguish reality from fiction.
People who had a pretty good idea when they were being lied to, and who did not prefer lies, however sweet and pleasing, over truths, however bitter and unpleasant.
If a democracy cannot rely on this basic assumption, and fails as a result, it isn't the doorstep of political leaders, political parties or even the press where the blame will be laid.
Our doorstep - and ours alone. We are "the People" on whose shoulder the burden, the responsibility, the duty for governance ultimately lies - and on whose heads the consequences for failure will fall.
