You should be aware that he was referring to the Detroit automakers in that speech.

Detroit's decline has MANY REASONS-Federally required REDLINING among others. Growing up, I used to wonder why the home prices in neighborhoods crashed. Later I learned one major reason was that the banks were not allowed to give people federally insured mortgages in those neighborhoods. That did wonders at dropping property values like a rock. Cash-only investors, I mean slum-lords, swooped in and the rest is history. If you were to compare Detroit's metropolitan area to other metropolitan areas like San Diego (which expanded as the population grew), it doesn't look nearly as much like a basket case. I drove down Ford Road in Canton today. Mile after mile of new shopping centers and newish neighborhoods on what used to be prime farmland. Similar developments have happened along the length of M-59 further north (although some of it in the west was better grazing land than farmland). It is sad. I also think that a city averaging 5000 people per square mile (the same as Austin, Texas) can hardly be viewed as having been abandoned!

The automakers were a huge part of Detroit's income/infrastructure/tax base. In addition to what the poster said above, when the automakers moved out, either overseas or to other states, there was no manufacturing coming in to replace it.

Detroit's population has been cut in half It peaked at over 2 million in the early 50s, but is somewhere around 750,000 now. It still has the same area, however, and so much provide municipal services to that same geographic area with much, much smaller tax revenue coming in.

It's all well and good to just blithely say "run by Democrats for how many years" in a lame attempt to be witty, but if you are going to start a conversation (I know that wasn't actually your intent, but I am going to start a conversation)about something like this, at least arm yourself with facts and some basic knowledge and please, for the love of all that is holy, do some research on the internet meme's you are propagating.

Many of the neighorhoods in Detroit (especially those built since 1920 for factory workers) consisted of very small houses, 750-900 square feet and smaller. In the 1950's and 1960's those houses housed families, some of them quite LARGE families even though they contained only two small bedrooms on the first floor and one bigger bedroom on the second floor. Now that most families are smaller, some (but, unfortunately, by no means ALL) of the population drop was a good thing resulting in less overcrowding inside of houses. The population easily could have dropped by a third with all of the houses still occupied.

Does anyone know if you can file bankruptcy on a judgement that has been taken out on you by a hospital?
