Obamacare is not free. - Voice of Reason

People who meet the POVERTY level guidelines qualify for Medicaid. People who can afford to pay (albeit with subsidies) can sign up for Obamacare policies. I am so glad the people who can afford health insurance will now being paying for it rather than relying on me and other taxpayers for a free ride.
Yabut, look at all the ones climbing aboard for the free ride! - wheeeeeeeeeeeee

Some people don't have a choice.... - Anonymous

From what I understand, people making under 100% of poverty aren't eligible for subsidies for premiums or co-pays. So if they've been paying for their health insurance from their nest egg while going through a long period of low earnings or taking care of their mom, they're facing their health insurance premiums doubling and their out-of-pocket deductibles and copays doubling as well. So they won't have a choice but to go on Medicaid if and when it is offered by their state. People making less than 100% of poverty should have the same choices as a person making 101% of poverty-not a larger subsidy, but the same sized one, not a sudden drop to $0!!! Some low income people are not moochers. It's less expensive for the state to help an adult caregiver with his or her healthcare than to pay for the senior's custodial care-and at $40,000/year at a small "home" or $80,000/year at a nursing home, most seniors quickly burn through their savings so that state is stuck with the bill if the children can't help. I don't think it is fair that caregivers of minor children qualified for Medicaid if their income is low but caregivers of seniors didn't. Thankfully, many states are expanding Medicaid eligibility come 2014.
Adults without dependent children - sm

Connecticut started implementing expanded MA a couple of years ago, thus, now with Obamacare, there has been a greater need for private insurance with subsidies at this time. In our state, Medicaid is being expanded to adults without dependent children, which is about time. I feel sorry for those living in states that did not step up.

under Medicaid, every taxpayer pays for them. - just like the Obamacare making the young pay for the elderly, they will also be paying for those on Medicaid.

I don't know why everyone thinks qualifying for Medicaid is so wonderful when taxpayers will bear the brunt of it.
What one or two people don't realize - sm

is that people living in poverty need health care too, especially children and their parents and ALL people. I don't mind paying insurance so men can be treated for prostate cancer (even though I am female), or prenatal, L&D care etc., even though I don't have children. I may need a hysterectomy some day and maybe I won't be old yet, maybe I will. Too bad I expect my insurance or Medicare to pay for it, just like I have paid for years and years.
We taxpayers already are paying for - the brunt of it
[ In Reply To ..]
When people go uninsured and turn up to the emergency room for treatment. So you would rather we pretend that is not happening already? Under Medicaid at least the costs will be contained.

Also, many of us are making less and less thanks to the deregulation of corporations and their ability to pay us as low as they can, so even in our highly skilled job as MTs I imagine there are some who qualify for Medicaid and food stamps. This is hardly our fault, and it is not President Obama's fault either. You can thank the do-nothing on steroids congress who have fought against passing any law that might fix the crumbling infrastructure of this country or provided any new jobs for anyone.

Eight years of deregulation and more and more tax breaks and laws favoring the wealthy "job-creators" and corporations who then sent our jobs overseas and found ways to lower our pay without paying any consequences means no matter what you do, unless you are a corporate CEO or maybe a politician, your wages are under threat, so just watch out, we all may be qualifying for Medicaid soon.
This is what I was trying to get across - Nimby

Why is it okay for taxpayers to bear the brunt of Medicaid costs but the uninsured who go to the ER is horrendous and they are a drain on society? As far as I know, those on Medicaid don't pay anything, either. The Taxpayers do.

To me, it's all the same. Taxpayers pay for the uninsured when they show up at the ER and they pay for those who are on Medicaid. So what's different?

Obamacare isn't going to fix that. In fact, it puts more people on Medicaid and the only way to keep Medicaid's 'head above water" would be to raise taxes. Is that viable option in this economy with people's wages going down through no employment, part time employment or just plain low wages?

There but for the grace of God - a taxpayer becomes a Medicaid recipient
[ In Reply To ..]
But they are still a taxpayer!

It could be you or I tomorrow the way things are going in this profession. We have paid taxes all our lives, so when we are pushed out of our job or our wages just cut way down (mine have halved in 3 short years) through no fault of our own, we then become the "takers" whether we want to or not.

But guess what, we are still paying taxes even if we qualify for Medicaid, so it's not a one way thing. So is everyone else down on this low rung of the economic food chain.

Deregulation and offshoring allows these multinational corporations to pay us as low as they can and get tax breaks for offshoring jobs. Then they put their profits offshore so they don't have to pay anywhere near the taxes we do. There's where the money could come from. Stop allowing these corporations with monstrous profits to pay their employees so low that they need Medicaid and food stamps.

I think we need a law where if you have an employee that qualifies for these and you are a corporation making huge profits, you must reimburse the govt for cost of their food stamps and Medicaid. I think then they would miraculously see the point of raising wages.

The difference between paying for the unforeseen costs at the ER and Medicaid is that Medicaid costs way less than just walking in uninsured off the street and leaving the bill (the govt wangles the best prices for Medicaid care), so yes I believe it is better for the taxpayer than just leaving everyone uninsured.

We have some people here, actors, musicians, CEOs of major corporations....gold coast people who commute to NY, they make the income statistics look like so wonderful. Far from it. The average person here is not "rich". We have the highest taxation overall in the country (when you count all our state income taxes, local real estate and yearly car taxes, sales tax, and on and on). Plus, the cost of living is very high here. We have plenty of people on welfare, SNAP, you name it. Our middle class really no longer exists here. We have virtually no mass transit. Gas and heating oil prices are among highest in country. Everyone is trying to move out of our state, while the welfare seekers are moving in. Our factories have mostly been shuttered by the greedy CEOs and work sent to India and China.

Yeah, Conneticut seems like a great place to be on welfare. - Huh?

[ In Reply To ..]
The logic escapes me. No mass transit and high heating costs does not sound like a welfare paradise.

Another Obamacare Win: Red State Montana House Passes Medicaid ExpansionApr 11, 2015
Montana’s Republican-controlled House voted Thursday, 54-46, to approve federal subsidies for Medicaid expansion. The bill would expand Medicaid coverage to between 27,000 and 46,000 low-income Montanans who earn less than 138 percent of the federal poverty level. All 41 H ...

State Jobs To Be Created By Obamacare?Jan 14, 2013
