it had just started doing this in the past year or so. I never had this problem before. Also over the past several years, my bowel movements have more and more whole food in them. I know everyone passes corn, but I now pass corn, peas, mushrooms, peppers, carrots, pulp from fruit and so on and so on. I also have the smell in my urine after eating asparagus but again, I never had it before and it has just started over the past several years. If it was something from all my life, I could understand better but why only recently. Sorry if too descriptive.

I'd see a GI doc about this. Have your BMs changed otherwise in terms of color, consistency, or frequency? Are you around 50 yrs old, more or less? It would be appropriate for a colonoscopy. I have food in my BMs, but my teeth are quite bad and I don't chew very well. Do you have any upper digestive symptoms like esophageal pain or heartburn. Personally, I would be searching the internet for hours before I'd see a doc, but don't waste your time with a GP or Int Med guy, go straight to a GI doc and/or GU doc.

Been to numerous GI docs. Have had numerous colonoscopies and endoscopies. I carry diagnosis of GERD, IBS, gastroparesis, and have had PUD. I have had problems with my GI tract since I was a little kid. I sometimes aspirate stomach acid into my lungs when I am sleeping and wake up choking and gasping for air. One GI doc had me on many medications that he was starting to prescribe meds just to get the side effects of that medications, for example giving me cholesterol medication for the side effect of constipation. They order tests and when there does come back an abnormal result, I just get told, that does not matter. Then, why did you order it in the first place? I personally am so tired of putting out all this money for tests and getting no results. My intestines are so twisted and torqued that they can not even do a normal colonoscopy on me any more. When I was in fourth grade, over the summer before starting school, I was admitted to Children's Hospital for a week just to run a ton of tests because I got the "stomach flu" at least once a month and the only thing I got out of that was poison ivy! Yes, they had a poison ivy plant in the room I was in at Children's Hospital. Several years back, I had a capuslar endoscopy where you swallow the camera pill and it just sat in my stomach for eight hours without ever moving any further. I have diabetes and one doctor just says, well it is all from the diabetes, but I had the capular endoscopy before I was ever diagnosed with diabetes and like I said, it has been going on since childhood. It just gets worse and more unusual symptoms every year but no one can seem to figure it out. I have had a sore throat for three years now that never goes away and everyone says it is from GERD, although no one will even look at my throat. I am just getting really fed up with these doctors. Aren't there any decent ones left anymore?

You have been describing a fairly typical "celiac experience." It is often misdiagnosed. I do not know why, because it is so incredibly obvious. From the diarrhea, to the IBS, to fibromyalgia, to GERD, to gastroparesis. to everything else you mentioned with the possible exception of the diabetes. I see that someone mentions fibromyalgia . . . that, too. How about joint aching and swelling? Headaches and migraines? How about itching? Eczema, dry and flaky skin, rashes, or itching. Do you search for a skin lotion or cream that will fix your itchy, dry skin? Ever noticed that you get a runny nose and stuffy head after eating? Think about that and see if it goes along with the sore throat. Do your ears stuff up or itch and do you have tinnitus? Has it been suggested that you see a psychiatrist? That you are under stress?

The colonoscopies are classic . . . one after another without a diagnosis.

You might want to google celiac disease. Also take a good look at some of the websites of people who have it. They usually have gluten free or gluten-free in the name. Gluten-free Girl, for instance. Gluten Free Goddess.

Medical websites will not tell you much but you can see the rest of it on gluten-free websites.

Be sure to google gluten free and Italy. It is so common in Italians that they test all children for it at the time they start school.

There is no drug treatment for this, which is why I think US doctors do not seem to pay attention to it. They are too busy focusing on individual symptoms to prescribe drugs for, like GERD, like diarrhea, etc.

It is also difficult to grasp that all this stuff can be solved with relative ease, but doing so involves food and US doctors don't go there. It is kind of unbelievable that something you eat could cause this. We can accept that there are things like peanut allergies that cause anaphylaxis, but not something producing such varied symptoms.

There is a diagnostic test for this, but it may be inconclusive if you are gluten intolerant instead of celiac. Just go on a gluten-free diet for a few months. It is quite easy and does not need to be expensive. I would recommend a dairy-free diet while you are at it, just in case.

There is a nice Wikipedia article that explains gluten and tells you what to avoid. Wheat and certain other grains, and anything made with gluten or its byproducts like modified vegetable starch, textured vegetable protein, etc. Canned soups and any prepared foods like frozen meals or deli products unless they say gluten-free on the label.

Rice, quinoa, and buckwheat are ok. Oats are ok, but you need to buy certified gluten free oats because most oatmeal is contaminated with wheat. Bob's Red Mill has gluten free oats and other products -- it will tell you on the label. A couple of Progresso soups are gluten free--if the label does not say so, they are not. All Boar's Head products are gluten free. Some frozen sausage is gluten free, again, it will tell you on the label. All fresh vegetables, fruit, eggs, and meat are gluten free if they are in their natural state. Dairy products might not be, as a lot are now extended with fillers. Some corn tortillas are ok. You just have to read labels carefully. Some medications have gluten in the binder or filler.

Even a crumb of bread will set you off, so you cannot think you will just cut down and see what happens. You have to do this with great seriousness. You should see results very soon.

I hope this helps. Most of us celiacs were totally shocked by what symptoms stopped when we went gluten free. It is usually not difficult for us to stay gluten free because life is so much nicer.

It is worth a try, don't you think? I have seen people who were so heavily invested in the attention they get for their symptoms -- they actually seemed to want the medical attention and illness -- that they refused to even try, but I do not think you are that way.

When I eat fresh beets (after roasting them) my urine is red. It kind of scared me, but then I thought about eating the beets. Also, if your urine has a bad odor, you can purchase something called Just A Drop and use that before you urinate. I use that when I go out somewhere.

Seriously, I'm very surprised that with all this no one has said anything about doing anything like a partial colectomy. I've worked for this GI doc since 1986 and have heard it all. This is what it ultimately comes down to.

Maryland, so unfortunately Oklahoma is a little too far for me, LOL. Any recommendations for doctors in Maryland, preferably near Baltimore?

I also carry the lovely diagnosis of 'fibromyalgia' although I have always thought it was not that and really some autoimmune disorder. I did have an awsome rheumatologist many, many years ago and he unfortunately moved to Colorado and have never been able to find anyone since. In the years since, I was diagnosed with gout, although they never did an aspiration and confirmed gouty crystal and the rheumatologist I saw, even though my uric acid was elevated at the time, did not believe it was a gout attack. I had no redness and no warmth, just swelling and unbelievable pain in my ankle. Could not walk and literally crawled into the emergency room until someone finally came over with a wheelchair.

I am at the point, that I do not care if it is terminal, just wish someone could put it all together and come up with a diagnosis! I really think it is all related somehow. Thanks for the info and if you can get a name of a good GI in Maryland, would be much appreciated.

who does not believe in fibromyalgia. Did your good rheumatologist give you any specific diagnoses. I hate to ask, do you consume a lot of aspartame? In any event, you might try seeing a hematologist to find out what all is going on with your blood. How old are you now? Are you near a university or tertiary care medical center. It is amazing the differences among the MD degrees out there. Some aren't worth the paper they are printed on. You might be ready for a research institute, if you are close to one.

I'm sure you are miserable. I sincerely hope you can get something straigtened out.

I am in a time of need and to be perfectly honest, I do not know where to turn. My husband has just been diagnosed with lung cancer, golf ball sized lesion, so I know is not good.
