Burning up and afraid to turn on air because of

Posted: Aug 24, 2012

I ran the central air all summer long because of the many heat waves and extremely high temperatures and bills were averaging $160 to $180 a month!! Missed one month of paying it and now I owe close to $400 dollars. I finally turned it off a week ago and now have the ceiling fans running in every room, a window fan and a standing oscillating fan for when Im working, but its still hot. I am afraid to turn the central air back on because of the ridiculously high electric bills. Something really needs to be done about these utility companies. My Vent of the day..Im hot.;

I hear you - anon

It was 110 degrees here for a whole week and I didn't use my air. My bills can get over $300 in the summer but not this year, since I can't afford it. I have a fan about 2 feet from me at all times.

If you live in a dry area you can put a bowl of ice in front of the fan and it helps, but if it's humid it just makes it worse.

I've been sitting here in nothing but my panties - all day. Thinking of taking a

cool shower and powdering myself down with baby powder.

I know this is gonna sound weird, but it an issue - I think about SM

I also often am in just t shirt and panties as I am often the only one here, or maybe DH will be here. But my question is, do you put down a towel on the furniture before you sit? I do cause I want more than 1 thin layer of washable fabric between me and the chair but just wondering, am I the only one that feels like that? That would even thing that?
Yes, I keep a fresh towel on the seat of my chair - and across the back of it ..sm

I take them off and wash them like once or twice a week, because like you, I never have on any clothes. At least you wear a T-shirt which I otherwise would do, but since its been hot I just been letting it all hang out.

I think when you spend hours sitting in your work chair you should keep a washable fabric like a towel or something in it and clean your chair with a scrub brush and upholstry (spelling) cleaner from time to time.

Not that I smell, just that I spend so much time sitting in it. Kind of like the same reason you wash and change your bedding every week.
I started sitting on a towel after I - discovered adult chat rooms

It's a handy habit now that I, like many of you, work naked.

while you work, keep ice packs on your neck - it helps

Just have to get up and change them often. Also, if you can soak your feet in cold water, makes the rest of you feel cold!

Get window units - sm - East TX MT

[ In Reply To ..]
Two years ago my central air went out. Of course I did not have 5 grand to put a new unit in. I bought window units for every room. Normally my bill in August and September is over 600 for each month. Since I put window units in, my bill is about 340 each month. Not great but compared to 600 I can definitely live with it. Just very important to get the right size unit for the room. During May, June and July which is also hot here, I was running just a little over 200 a month which is again is a BIG savings for me.

Thank you! Will consider that since most of my time - is spent in bedroom and it is

[ In Reply To ..]
the hottest room in the house for some reason. Until then I'll do the ice packs, cool showers and fans. It's been so long since I have had to buy one of those things, not sure how much they cost these days.

Window Units Question - Uncomfortable MT

[ In Reply To ..]
We have central air, and keep it at 80 to 81, which is quite comfy in most of the house. However, my office is ALWAYS much warmer, as it's all windows and outside walls. We can't be turning the AC down to 79 or less because of the cost, and we thought about getting me a window unit just for my office, just for during my work hours.

However, my fear is that the unit noise will hinder my ability to do my job. I often have not-the-best sound quality. I have trouble even with a portable fan on my desk. Maybe I'm just extra sensitive to "white noise" being distracting while I'm working or something.

Anyway, those with units in your work area, doesn't it bother you?

Re the cold shower: Believe it or not, a warm shower, as warm/hot as you can stand it, will actually keep you cooler afterwards. It opens up your pores and allows sweat, which in turn cools you down.

I find that the fans sometimes cause me to not hear - as well..see msg

I dont have a window unit, I have central air too, but run a ceiling fan and rotating fan in my work area and then I end up having to get up and turn it off ever so often when I get a poor sound file.

I hadn't thought about how a window unit would affect my hearing, as I am seriously considering one. Its been a long time since I have even been in the presence of one and I am wondering if maybe they are making them more quieter these days than they use to be? I dont know.
Well... - Uncomfortable MT

They do make those practically noisless fans, but they're totally expensive. I think Dyson makes it.

I'm thinking if my little fans are too noisy, then even a semi-quiet AC would still be too noisy. My overhead fan doesn't bother me too much, though. It's pretty quiet. So, I have a small fan on the floor at my office door to try and suck in cooler air from the rest of the house, and I have a small fan on my desk. Sometimes, when I have a really good run of good dictations, I can actually have both on at the same time.

Hi I saw your post and I used to worry also. I live in NY and we are now a deregultaed state. This means we can choose who we get our power supply from. You can choose a company with competetive rate. I have cut my budget amount from 86 a month to 46. That is huge savings yearly. Email me at dianag029@yahoo.com and I can tell you if your state is also deregulated. I work with a company called viridian, this is green energy source and your rate is lower because natural resources such as air, wind, water do not have costs like fossil fuels, coal and oil. plus you help with less polution. Hope this was helpful.
