Turn of the century question

Posted: Feb 8, 2010

Last night I was watching the movie Emma on Masterpiece Theatre.  I love that movie and think I actually like this one better than the Emma starring Gwyneth Paltrow.  Anyway....Laura Linney gave the introduction.  She talked about what it was like for a woman to live in that era.  My husband told me he could never ever live back then (clothing, the way they talked and acted).  All I could think of (of course never telling him) how I feel I have been misplaced in time and I actually believe I belong in that era.  So the question I wonderd is this...

If you could go back in time and live in an era when times were more simple, and lived that kind of life would you glady give up voting, having to work, computers, TV, automobiles, and all the stuff needed to survive in today's times to live a life like that?

I would in a heartbeat (but only if I could take modern dentistry with me) :-).

I've lived a rustic life. Believe me, you work hard. But it's a very fulfilling sort of work, because it pays directly into your survival and comfort. Of course, I believe I didn't have the stress I might have had many years ago, because I always knew there was an escape route back to civilization. People died of the simplest health issues back then. If my appendix were to rupture today, I'm a phone call from an ER. Out on the prairie in 1880, and I'd be septic and dead before too long.

I could give up any of the comforts, but I know I wouldn't live as long without modern day medicine.

I watched it too, all 3 episodes. - no way

It was like a fairy tale. Somehow unrealistic portrayal of that time, showing only the "lovely" sides of that century.
The focus is on Emma's failing approach to act as a matchmaker, almost losing out on her own match.

No way would I like to live in that times. The only occupation of women was gossiping and try to get married.

They could have made out of this story a very dire movie, had they approached it from a different view, emphasizing the negative aspects of life in that century.

But I enjoyed it very much and I always watch Masterpiece Theatre Classic.

I could give all this up in a heartbeat! nm - MT4ever

for exchange for what? You forget that in those times, - sm

book was published 1815 and story plays in England, women had almost no rights, they were treated like brainless possessions. Emma was a "bright" exception, but not so bright in understanding the feelings and intentions of other people.

No way would I want to live in those times.

going back to 19th century? Are you kidding me? - read message....

"It takes a considerable leap of the imagination for a woman of the 21st century to realise what her life would have been like had she been born 150 years ago.

We take for granted nowadays that almost any woman can have a career if she applies herself. We take for granted that women can choose whether or not to marry, and whether or not to have children, and how many.

Women of the mid-19th century had no such choices. Most lived in a state little better than slavery. They had little choice but to obey men, because in most cases men held all the resources and women had no independent means of subsistence. A wealthy widow or spinster was a lucky exception. A woman announcing her intention to remain single would attract social disapproval and pity. She could not have children or cohabit with a man: the social penalites were simply too high. Nor could she follow a profession, since they were all closed to women....." Etc.

The days prior to the Civil War, around 1850-60 when the U.S. was young. I'm into genealogy and as I go further back into my ancestors lives, I picture the life they had. It was a tough one, but it was also more peaceful. You relied on yourself. The social network was there and neighbors helped neighbors and shared.

Not too many laws. What was yours was yours. What you didn't have, you made. There were no strip malls, etc. Life was simple and QUIET.

Heck, I'd even take living in the 1950s-early 60s again. LOL

century changes - I am woman

NO WAY. Go back to a time when women were property? I think not. I come from a long, long line of strong, opinionated, working women. None of us would take the name of their husband, just for the old idea that once you married, you became that mans property. We carry on the family name.

Also, if the women in my family weren't so strong and stubborn, property that has been in our family forever would be lost.

so many other things also, like the right to vote, to become a professional, NOT to have children...

I could not do without a vehicle or electricity or a blackberry! haha! No, I wouldn't go back. I'd love to peek into the future tho!

Who Are You Picks For Best And Worst 3 Presidents In The 20-21st CenturyNov 17, 2014
I had a hard time choosing between 1 and 2, but here are my top 3 picks and why: 1. Teddy Roosevelt (Republican, Progressive Party): One of the best thought out, organized, and well-implemented presidential goals of all time, the "Square Deal" between companies, consumers and workers with the "3 C's" as the motivating force behind everything he did domestically: Conservation of natural resources (federal protection acts to preserve natural resources) , Control of corporations (anti- ...

"Romney's Tax Plan: Very Progressive, By 15th-century Standards."Oct 28, 2012
From The Economist: "The Tax Policy Center has completed an analysis of the distributional effects of Mitt Romney's tax plan, and as might be expected it's quite good for you if you're raking in the big bucks, and not particularly helpful if you're not." Tea Partiers Turn On Each OtherNov 23, 2009
After emerging out of nowhere over the summer as a seemingly potent and growing political force, the tea party movement has become embroiled in internal feuding over philosophy, strategy and money and is at risk of losing its momentum. The grass-roots activists driving the movement have become increasingly divided on such core questions as whether to focus their efforts on shaping policy debates or elections, work on a local, regional, state or national level or closely align themselves with the ...

When Did Commencement Ceremonies Turn Into Campaign Speeches?May 16, 2016
Instead of congratulating the grads for doing a good job, talk about life after college, and giving a rah-rah speech about what the grads can do, Kerry and Obama turned the ceremonies into political campaign speeches and/or more indoctrination. I think it's disgusting, especially since it's the progressives who have practically destroyed our country. Justice Clarence Thomas gave a fantastic commencement speech. I'm always facinated at some people who think all social problems and situations are so black and white.Abortion is here to stay, whether it's legal or not, just like it's always been an option when a woman finds herself facing the impossible situation of an unwanted pregnancy. QuestionMar 22, 2010
Okay, here is a question that I have not seen come up here.  While watching news today this just crossed my mind.  If the government sets an insurance rate you have to pay based upon what you make per year, do they take into account all your other bills, and that sometimes as ICs we don't get any work coming in at times, and then what they set is more than what you can afford (i.e. more money than your paycheck and you still have to pay all your bills).  As ICs I'm sure ...
