Prayer for Health Care

Posted: Nov 24, 2009

A dear friend of mine shared a prayer she wrote for health care and was kind enough to give me permission to share it here with all of you.  She makes some very poignant points that I feel should be shared.  Here goes:

Prayer for Health Care

Lord, we know that you must be aggrieved at the thought of so many people in the world who suffer from denial of access to the healing arts.  As a Healer Yourself, You showed unconditional compassion to so many of us humans who desperately needed to be restored to health in order to better praise and glorify Your holy name.

You did not refuse care to the leper with a terrible pre-existing condition.

You did not insist that the blind have vision care in their policies.

You made the lame walk again without demanding they turn over their entire savings for surgery or prosthetic limbs.

Your mother Mary would have been discharged from the stable after 24 hours under our current system, never able to receive the Gifts of the Magi.

The distressed and depressed found succor within Your warm embrace, without being referred to community mental health or substance abuse clinics with hopelessly long waiting lists for quick med checks and little guidance.

Lord, we have tried using the power of prayer to cure our loved ones, and sometimes it seemed like that worked.  As you know by their presence in Your Heavenly abode, prayer was often not enough.  You gave our medical professionals skill and intelligence, and You hoped that we as a people would find a way to let them make use of their great gifts for the benefit of all.

It must frustrate You when our dedicated health professionals, who received Your grace and wisdom while preparing for their arduous careers, are not permitted to treat the working poor.  You must shed tears when a hospital ER accepts uninsured people only until they are minimally ”stabilized,” then packs them off to a crowded facility with inadequate resources to provide an appropriate level of care.  And when the bills come in for the treatment they did receive, we know that You hear their despair.

It must break Your compassionate heart when Your flock is forced to choose between shelter, heat, food, or medical treatment.

When the people in charge claim to be “Christians” or otherwise devoted to You yet base their compassion upon the size of a person’s employer or bankroll, this must provoke the righteous anger You showed towards the money-changers in the Temple.

Please, Lord, soften the hearts of your followers.  Make them think about how their attitudes are anything but Christ-like.  Warm their cold spirits as You provide your healing graces to us all. Bless the tireless health professionals who volunteer in free clinics after a hard day’s work, and the others who volunteer in those clinics or support them through their donations. We know that their actions are pleasing to You.

We implore you, Lord, please hear our prayer.

Totally overhauling our health care system is NOT the way to go, and neither is Universal Health Care, which seems to be what you are alluding to with the above "prayer." Ted Kennedy could have written that for all I know, and he was a dedicated radical leftie, so I could care less what he was advocating. Socialized medicine DOES NOT WORK and is NOT the answer. The system needs to be tweaked but we do NOT need to start over from scratch!

Not to mention that the good Lord didn't make their premiums go up dramatically (ours will go from $1200 to $15000 for 2 people) and did not threaten to jail us for not seeking health care (or today's version, not having health care).

Where do you come up with this? What country's newspapers are you reading? There is no "total overhaul" You just keep repeating the same untruths.
Impervious to facts.

You think this plan is all roses? It is terrible! Go listen - to someone other than Olderbag!.nm

who said plan is roses? The plan is not the one Obama would have preferred but he has to deal (quite willingly) with the goofballs in the legislature that are bought and paid by the corporations. The conservatives distorted it for the purpose of having it fail. Grow a brain before it is too late.

Go read the bill before it's too late!.. but I am sure you - will see only the "sunny side", brainy.nm

The plan is not a total overhaul of our healthcare system. The basic system will remain the same as it is now.

Yes, this is true with the exception of a few more rules the private insurance companies will have to follow, like not excluding people with pre-existing conditions, no dropping people when they get sick, keeping your company insurance when you lose your job, etc. The ONLY difference will be that people that now have NO insurance because their employers does not provide it and they cannot afford a private policy will have the OPTION of health insurance coverage at a price they can afford to pay based on their income, not free, just affordable.

Off my soapbox now.
Oldtimer, that's not true! - AzRain

Have you read the plan? They fully expect insurance to not be able to compete and have made plans to force them out of business by the year 2019! How does that equal "the basic system will remain the same as it is now"? And FGS, it's been called healthcare OVERHAUL by the media and folks in Congress for the last year, so where did you get the idea it wasn't an overhaul?
not the only difference - cj
[ In Reply To ..]
While it is not the only difference, the option you mention is not an option. It's mandatory. It will be mandatory for everyone to purchase insurance. That's a pretty major difference if you ask me. They will take away a person's choice. This is way beyond the scope of govt. They are giving themselves more and more power over our lives every day and eroding our personal freedoms. It may be a good thing for everyone to have insurance (I can't imagine why someone would choose not to if they were able to buy it) but it is not a good thing for the govt to force this on people and to fine those who choose not to. Let's not call it an option 'cuz it sure isn't one. There are other differences too but I think you know that anyway.

Health Insurance Is A Poor Measure Of Health Care.Sep 14, 2011
On Tuesday, the Census Bureau released its annual report on health insurance coverage in the United States. News media widely misconstrued the data and presented the problems facing the nation's health care system through a distorted lens. Many major news outlets made a basic error when reporting on the Census Bureau study. The Los Angeles Times wrote that "the number of Americans with no health insurance rose in 2010 to 49.9 million from 49 million the year before." But the figure c ...

Based on the level of discourse during the recent health care debate, it appears that the far right possessed the lion's share of stupid comments. Common Sense Health Care Nov 05, 2009
Common Sense Health Care our Nation can afford. - This makes sense to me.   The American people have spoken. They oppose government-run health care.  Republicans are on the side of the American people. In the national Republican address on Saturday, October 31, 2009, House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) discussed Republicans’ plan for common- ...

How To Achieve Affordable Health CareDec 23, 2009

Judge Rules Out Health Care LawDec 13, 2010
This is good news.  Now if politicians could just make health care affordable for all.  I'd love the same rates as someone in Idaho or other states have.  Make health insurance competitive, they have to accept pre-existing conditions and nobody could ever be refused health care and I think that would be a great way for a new year.  But forcing people to buy a product they don't want is just not right and I'm glad this judge saw how unconstitutional it is. &nbs ...

Fraud In Health Care SystemMar 13, 2010
It is estimated that there is at least 100 billion dollars health care fraud annually.  There are truly needy people and they should be helped.  But there are also many people who don't have health insurance because they just do not want to pay premiums, use their money for other things instead, when they could pay and are able to pay.  This is just not right and this needs to be stopped, and that should make a dent in health care costs.  Why not go after the health care ...

CBO estimates IRS will need nearly 17,000 new agents to look for people who don't buy a government-mandated insurance policy. According to what I have been reading today, NO. While Congress has used its taxing power to fund Social Security and Medicare, never before has it used its commerce power to mandate that an individual person engage in an economic transaction with a private company.
