Are you happy making minimum wage?

The Iowa Republican controlled state legislature is pushiing a bill to freeze the minimum wage at $7.25 and rescind local wage increases that have already been passed. This should make the big MTSOs very happy. How about you?

Do you think your work is only worth $7.25 a hour?

I think these Republicans think that the only people making 7.25 an hour are burger flippers.

I know, there are MTs always willing to brag about their line counts, etc. I know, however, that everytime I get to where I am making money that I am not ashamed of, that my account will be pulled out and sent overseas and I will be back to training another new account--along the salary drop and added stress of making an error.

I think I am worth more than that.

definitely needs to go up to at least $9.00. I can't believe Iowa's is still at $7.25. Thank goodness I work in a state where minimum wage is $11.00, and I'm retired and out of MT and work part-time (20 hours) at a job that pays $13/hour. I feel bad for those still working in MT in low minimum wage states. Even if you get out of MT, your hourly wage probably won't be that great either.

Insurance, rent, transportation, groceries, local taxes have all gone up, but I am making the same as 2008. I recall a past minimum wage increase. When the wage went up it would have been higher than my clerical salary. They raised my clerical salary correspondingly so it was a win-win.

I know there are a lot of people who make the argument that it will just cause the cost of their fast food hamburger to go up, but I really don't care about your hamburger. I think for once I should be able to keep up with the cost of inflation. My measly little salary is not going to effect things that much. Maybe some of those million dollar CEOs could give us a break.

I think the California firings were retaliation against the paid sick leave, paid internet, paid breaks, and any other labor protections that California law provides to its citizens. That we would all live in a state who felt we should not be ripped off and taken advantage of would be a wonderful thing.

If more states would actually protect the workers, you wouldn't have retaliation like that, but the republicans are determined to keep that from happening so the wealthy can become wealthier at the rest of our expense. I never understood why middle of the road people would vote republican but they do.

Raising the minimum wage definitely needs to happen, despite the evils that may follow. In a way, it would really balance itself out since those getting a pay raise would have money to spend where they normally would not. This would mean more people coming off of government assistance, which means more government benefits available to those that need it most. Granted there are rules that should be put into place such as drug testing in order to receive benefits, or a max limit of benefits (for those that purposely have another kid to keep benefits..not saying its everybody, but they are out there).

Our work is worth MUCH MORE than what these greedy a-holes pay us. We are the ones that stand between them and a malpractice suite a lot of times, but the MTSOs do not hold doctors responsible for their end of things, and the professional organizations like AHDI have failed as well, by failing to enforce laws to protect patient information (such as not allowing dictation on cell phones, around family, not allowing punishment financially for sending blanks, filling in blanks...basically anything that is - and was - a normal part of our job to ensure patient safety). But when you get down to the nitty gritty of it all, the point is that this former good career path is no longer a career, long past it's glory days. Sure there will always be jobs, but in-office scribes and EHRs have long replaced many of us. Once I manage to find a way out, I am leaving MT behind permanently and not looking back. It is definitely not worth the stress it has imposed on my mind and body, and not worth missing time with my family. Time to make myself happy.

I think a variety of factors drove Nuance to fire their CA workers, but probably the bigger factor was all the employee-friendly rules and regs about paid breaks, paid internet, etc. The min wage hike was just the nail in the coffin. MTSOs will eventually have to face the fact that they will have to pay a higher wage to their workers, no choice in the matter. They can't fire their entire US working force since some of their customers require that work stay in the hands of US MTs. Plus, it would be way too obvious and leave them open to a flood of lawsuits for any number of reasons.

This thread is in regards to employee-based MTs. ICs have the freedom to work for a half cent per line, nights and weekends, with no benefits if they so choose.

By "clear up", I mean "to the extent possible". I've spent two weeks "in the stacks", reviewing more than 2 dozen of the more recent economic analyses on the subject of the minimum wage, from sources that are considered reasonably objective. For the most part, I focused on studies published by the NBER. Of course, there's never any absolute assurance of objectivity, but peer review offers some reason to hope for it.
