We warned you minimum-wage-raisers what would happen.

Posted: Nov 1, 2016

Just got the memo from my company with regard to parts of the country where they will not take employees - and they're either where the minimum wage has been raised (like Seattle) or states that impose other gargantuan regulations on small businesses. There will also be strict limits on how much people can work, and there will be no overtime. There have been a number of studies about the impact of mandatory increases in the minimum wage. It's impossible to summarize these studies, but one meta-study (looking at many studies) showed that the impact is mixed. While some people are lifted out of poverty, others are shoved down below the poverty line due to elimination of jobs, full-time jobs being shifted to part-time, loss of overtime hours, etc. In terms of numbers, the last national increase in the minimum wage resulted in slightly more people being shoved below the poverty than those who were lifted above it. As if we didn't have enough downward pressure on our incomes, now this. Thank you so very, very much - NOT!;

No, what is needed is a uniform federal minimum wage - see message

If all the states had a the same minimum wage, the companies would not be able to play MTs against each other. We all need more money, not a race to the bottom of the barrel.

I agree, and I also think if they are planning - on offshoring the whole shebang

And if they really want their entire MT staff to be in India, why should they be allowed to drag their feet about it.

My company - one of the largest MTSOs - recently fired all the California employees, presumably not just because of higher minimum wage, but also because they have decent labor laws (paid breaks, they have to pay internet fees, etc.). What does that say about an MTSO that fires everyone because they didn't want to have to treat the employees decently?

We are unfortunate to be in a profession where all the bad practices are not exposed to public view. Not that they would care, but they probably would at least try to make it LOOK like they did. They don't have to worry about this, it can look as bad as it is and nobody cares about our predicament, they are able to fly under the radar with their bad practices and be as mercenary and flagrant as they like without hiding it.

The one encouraging thing is they did give the Californians severance and they didn't fight UE. I think that's the first time I have heard that - usually they fight tooth and nail to not allow UE to my knowledge.

I see that as being eventually what we can all expect, and I agree - let's make the federal minimum wage higher and standard across the board and they can do it now.

If the minimum wage goes higher, the crappy job I can get in the rural community I moved to (since I had such a great job which was work at home - BEFORE they cut my pay in half that is) is definitely looking a lot better. I guess it will have to, if we all get fired.

Minimum WageOct 23, 2014
I heard a fellow on TV the other night say (quote?) a conversation at the dinner table the night before with dad telling his children "my dream for you is to some day have a minimum wage job."  The conversation was about minimum wage jobs not being the goal, but rather the stepping stone to a better job with better pay - people should strive to get out of the minimum wage jobs - not want them to be the best that they can do - with minimum wage, the employer can have more positions to offer ...

Minimum WageJan 23, 2015
I want to ask what would happen if the minimum wage changed to higher than it is. Would all these companies have to pay minimum wage? I know that when I asked about this from the head of the local (can't remember the title of the organization right now) that she said that they had to pay minimum wage. I have heard someone say that if they increased it to $16 an hour that people would be able to live on that. Can't remember who but he was a business expert, etc. Even if they don ...

Who Makes Minimum Wage?Oct 29, 2014
Who makes minimum wage? Apparently not just your average fast food worker. The average age of a minimum wage worker is 35, not the teenager the Republicans are so afraid will raise the cost of their hamburgers.  54% of minimum wage workers labor at a full time job.  Not the teenager who works for a couple of hours after school.  27% of minimum wage workers support children.  Well, I am not sure if that is the teenager working down at the fast food joint--that probably dep ...

Ah, Yes - That $15 Minimum Wage In Seattle.Jul 23, 2015
Liberals really should listen to conservatives, who have a much better handle on economic matters. 1.  Hardly anyone has gone off the public assistance rolls. 2.  Restaurant workers are losing the tip income they depended on, both because patrons know about the new wage, and don't feel obliged to tip, and also because some restaurants are adding a 15% surtax on the bill to cover their labor costs. 3.  People asking for LESS hours so they don't lose their welffare (!). ...

Are You Happy Making Minimum Wage?Feb 09, 2017
The Iowa Republican controlled state legislature is pushiing a bill to freeze the minimum wage at $7.25 and rescind local wage increases that have already been passed.  This should make the big MTSOs very happy.  How about you?   Do you think your work is only worth $7.25 a hour? I think these Republicans think that the only people making 7.25 an hour are burger flippers.   I know, there are MTs always willing to brag about their line counts, etc.  I know, however, th ...

Let's Clear Up The Minimum Wage NonsenseOct 27, 2014
By "clear up", I mean "to the extent possible".  I've spent two weeks "in the stacks", reviewing more than 2 dozen of the more recent economic analyses on the subject of the minimum wage, from sources that are considered reasonably objective.  For the most part, I focused on studies published by the NBER.  Of course, there's never any absolute assurance of objectivity, but peer review offers some reason to hope for it. They don't call economics "the dismal science" ...

Raising Minimum Wage To $15 An Hour? Dec 08, 2016
Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton wanted the minimum wage raised and that was part of their platform.  Does anyone think raising the minimum wage will help the economy?  My soon to be ex-company, Nuance, fired the California MTs because of minimum wage higher than average in California. Will other companies avoid high minimum wage requirements and avoid doing business in those states?  Do you think if the minimum wage is higher, costs to the consumers will be higher.  If ...

One Of The Adaptive Responses To Minimum Wage IncreasesOct 28, 2014
Businesses don't just sit idly by when wages are pushed up by artificial means such as mandatory minimum wage increases.  They take one or more of a whole range of adaptive measures that are available to them to protect their profits - cutting staff, cutting the hours of staff, demanding more of existing staff, reducing non-wage benefits and investing in labor-saving automation.  What I didn't mention is that, from a purely fiscal "spreadsheet" standpoint, the greater the (a ...

Unions Now Want Exemption From Minimum Wage Hike They Pushed.May 28, 2015
wage doesn't cost jobs might want to have a chat with unions in Los Angeles. After pushing for a big hike in that city's minimum wage — which will climb to $15 an hour by 2020 — labor leaders now want an exemption for companies that have unionized workers. Why? Because, according to Rusty Hicks, head of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, "with a collective bargaining agreement, a business owner and the employees negotiate an agreement that works for them both. The ag ...

The official, who spoke to Turkish newspaper Daily Sabah, says that the Germans received two written warnings, one on September 19 and the other on October 1, about Amri's radical Islamic beliefs. Years Of Internal BP Probes Warned That Neglect Could Lead To AccidentsJun 08, 2010

A series of internal investigations over the past decade warned senior BP managers that the company repeatedly disregarded safety and environmental rules and risked a serious accident if it did not change its ways. The confidential inquiries, which have not previously been made public, focused on a rash of problems at BP's Alaska oil-drilling unit that undermined the company’s publicly proclaimed comm ...

Alternative Minimum TaxMar 15, 2017
Trump and the Pubs want to get rid of the alternative minimum tax.  Based on what is known about Trump's finances now that those 2 pages have been revealed, he would have paid a tax rate of 3 1/2% without the alternative minimum tax.  This would probably be true for the other millionaires and billionaires as well.  What do you think that would do to the federal budget and the national debt? ...

Economics Debate Tonight--Wage Stagnation?Oct 28, 2015

Obama To Propose Wage Freeze For Federal EmployeesNov 29, 2010
Let's watch and see how this goes over. Already Steny Hoyer and the National Federation of Federal Employees are against this proposal. My thoughts on this (regarding the union), why should the American people that aren't covered by unions have to make all the sacrifices? Why should unionized employees get all the 'breaks' no matter what issue comes up?   NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- President Obama on Monday called for a two-year freeze in the wages of federal employee ...

Here Is What Is Going To Happen NowMar 11, 2011
Example:  It used to be that when you applied for a job with a private company, they would ask you what salary you desired.  For example, you would say $15.00 an hour.  The prospective employer would think, well public employees (who have their wages published) are receiving $15.50, and say, okay, how about $14.50?  And you probably said, great, because it was an offer and you already know that it is pretty tough competition for those government jobs.  No ...
