Wage gap: 1978 average $48K, average 2010 $33.7K.

Posted: Aug 1, 2013

It's far worse if you look at the top 10% of that top 1%. Over the past 30 years ownership of our nation's means of production has become clustered in the hands of a few people, who have simply decided to pay us less and themselves more.

Note that the wage gap has continued to grow dramatically since these data were gathered, which understate our crisis, which threatens the foundations of our nation itself.

So, we're thinking about elections. What are we going to do about it? 300 million of us are in that "average" pool, yet for the past 30, business-overfriendly legislative years the 1% has been "outvoting" us. Obviously the people we have been electing to office stopped representing US a long time ago.

McDonald's Corp offered its employees budget - budget advice, with a sample breakdown

[ In Reply To ..]
which suggested, among other things, allocating $25/month for healthcare and getting another job. It also, peculiarly, allocated $0 for heating.

Children are not a category. Makes sense. Obviously, these people shouldn't be budgeting to produce a family. But what about those parents who work at McDonald's because the good-paying jobs they trained for have been cancelled? Seemingly food and clothing were also left off altogether, but a spokesman explained that those are thrown into the $27 daily living expense category at the bottom. Hmmm, maybe the existing kids go there too?

But it does show they feel that, as long as you do get that second job and use that daily budget to buy extra blankets, you could get buy on what you were being paid.

Business analysts strongly disagree. But they do agree that for every one who can't make it and drop away into destitution there are plenty more newly-poor Americans who'll try.

Depressing. Wish it wasn't the reality in the USA, but it is. Also, many of the clerical jobs, which seem to be $9-12 per hour, are part time with no benefits.

In 1984, I was doing inventory control for a major manufacturer whom everyone probably knows for $4.25/hour, but I had profit-sharing, 401K, 5 paid sick days, 2 weeks paid vacation after a year (and it grew via the amount of time...I had built up to a month's vacation by the time I left), and there was a free Christimas party with lobster and filet mignon every year and a summer picnic with free food and drink, plus the boss gave everyone under his supervision a "token" (inexpensive) Christmas present.

I think I was probably a bit older than you, had the - skills, AND I was temping in L.A. But,

the rest--that's what I remember too. The American Dream was alive. Kids came out of high school and got jobs that could support them. Kids who came out of school prepared with some skills got better jobs and supported themselves in better style is all.

It's disgusting really. 1% owns 80% of all cash and assets, 14% are considered "middle class" and the rest of us are working for shameful wages.

Well, this country will learn as the Romans did. For 600 years they ruled, taxed the people until one day they rose up and said, "NO MORE."

"Oh," the aristocracy said laughing, 'What can you do?"

"We'll burn this baby to the ground."

And they did. History is a great teacher, and our day is fast upon us. What good will all those bazillion dollars the 1% rat-holed when our dollar is deemed worthless? After all, it's just fabric printed for fake worth.

The only pitfall to capitalism is it has no moral compass.

Let's not burn anything, though. Just change the law to - hang 'em up and shake 'em down. :) nm

No matter who is voted in, the results seem to be the same: crap wages, high housing/food/gas/utilities/higher education costs, and a whole lot of finger pointing by our so-called representatives.

And as long as we stay quiet, they will continue - just saying

[ In Reply To ..]
this trend. Capitalism makes slaves of us all - I am all for free enterprise, fair markets, etc., but capitalism = corruption and greed and they will continue to throw us breadcrumbs as long as we tolerate it.

UNITE based on what you have in common - don't let wedge issues keep dividing us.

BTW, where did you get your stats? Mine are from the gov't. - Truthhurts

Don't like social engineering? Think it's about paying for some slug to sit around swilling beer while you work? Think again. BTW, the 10 richest members of Congress, each worth hundreds of millions of dollars, all voted to extend the Bush tax cuts. The typical member is worth over $900,000, with incomes going up every year. Not a coincidence. Pubs: 7 of those 10 wealthiest are Democrats. What Is Your Average Electric Bill Every Month?Jan 05, 2010
I am so frustrated. My electric bill "automatically" goes up $20 or more in the winter. In the summer, I pay $78-80. In the winter $100-120. I called the electric company and they told me it's because we're in the house more often because it's cold out.  I think they're nuts and just don't want to check out the meter. They also stated my appliances could be too old or the gaskets aren't tight (checked before I called and they are tight) and the well pump could ...

None Of Bernie's Proposals Will Raise Taxes For Average....smJan 25, 2016
Americans, except for the health care bill. I don't know many people who make more than $200,000 a year. So consider that 2.2% income tax alongside what comes out of your paycheck for your employer's health insurance and what an average visit to the doctor's office costs (and then imagine what it costs for x-rays and surgery and things of that nature, and heaven forbid you have a medical emergency). Is 2.2% really that high? I've been told Briton pays 10%. The top 2% of Amer ...

Average College Grad $24,000 In Debt; 1 In 10 Can't Find Any Work At AllMay 05, 2011
I've been watching all the news reports about the colleges that collect big financial aid money and then don't teach the students anything that helps them get a job. Some of them use what they call 'Guerilla Registration' where the students don't even know they've enrolled yet, but the colleges are getting paid. This is one place where ouro country needs to cut costs, not in a way that keeps the poor from being able to get an education, but by cutting out the fraud ...

2010 Really Sucks So FarJul 03, 2010
Well, the title pretty much says it all.  What a year it's been for all I know, and I am getting worn down holding it together.  Here goes the list: Husband, lost job, got new job in Alaska, but new employer will pay zero for relocation funds, so the family is separated for a least another year until we can sell the house, sell the household goods, and save money for the move.  Add 2 unhappy-about-moving teens to that! Steele: GOP 'screwed Up' After Reagan, Won't Win In 2010Jan 06, 2010
By David Edwards and Daniel TencerTuesday, January 5th, 2010 -- 12:46 pm Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele apparently thinks the best way to ring in the New Year is to disappoint his followers. In a TV interview Monday, Steele said the party won't be regaining control of Congress in the mid-term elections this year. And if there's a reason for that, it's that the Republicans "screwed up" after Ronald Reagan left office. According to excerpts of his new book, ...

Health Insurance Premiums Jumped 9% From 2010-2011. Obamacare?Sep 25, 2012

Minimum WageOct 23, 2014
I heard a fellow on TV the other night say (quote?) a conversation at the dinner table the night before with dad telling his children "my dream for you is to some day have a minimum wage job."  The conversation was about minimum wage jobs not being the goal, but rather the stepping stone to a better job with better pay - people should strive to get out of the minimum wage jobs - not want them to be the best that they can do - with minimum wage, the employer can have more positions to offer ...

Who Makes Minimum Wage?Oct 29, 2014
Who makes minimum wage? Apparently not just your average fast food worker. The average age of a minimum wage worker is 35, not the teenager the Republicans are so afraid will raise the cost of their hamburgers.  54% of minimum wage workers labor at a full time job.  Not the teenager who works for a couple of hours after school.  27% of minimum wage workers support children.  Well, I am not sure if that is the teenager working down at the fast food joint--that probably dep ...

Ah, Yes - That $15 Minimum Wage In Seattle.Jul 23, 2015
Liberals really should listen to conservatives, who have a much better handle on economic matters. 1.  Hardly anyone has gone off the public assistance rolls. 2.  Restaurant workers are losing the tip income they depended on, both because patrons know about the new wage, and don't feel obliged to tip, and also because some restaurants are adding a 15% surtax on the bill to cover their labor costs. 3.  People asking for LESS hours so they don't lose their welffare (!). ...

Are You Happy Making Minimum Wage?Feb 09, 2017
The Iowa Republican controlled state legislature is pushiing a bill to freeze the minimum wage at $7.25 and rescind local wage increases that have already been passed.  This should make the big MTSOs very happy.  How about you?   Do you think your work is only worth $7.25 a hour? Let's Clear Up The Minimum Wage NonsenseOct 27, 2014
By "clear up", I mean "to the extent possible".  I've spent two weeks "in the stacks", reviewing more than 2 dozen of the more recent economic analyses on the subject of the minimum wage, from sources that are considered reasonably objective.  For the most part, I focused on studies published by the NBER.  Of course, there's never any absolute assurance of objectivity, but peer review offers some reason to hope for it. Raising Minimum Wage To $15 An Hour? Dec 08, 2016
Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton wanted the minimum wage raised and that was part of their platform.  Does anyone think raising the minimum wage will help the economy?  My soon to be ex-company, Nuance, fired the California MTs because of minimum wage higher than average in California.
