The Seattle/Tacoma airport, just upped hourly wage

Posted: Apr 17, 2014

...... to $15 an hour!!!  I wonder if they can spell oophorectomy, or esophagogastroduodenoscopy.  You know, the easier ones....Hummmpf.  That certainly makes me feel not at all valued and you?

;

I would love to work at an airport, they're so exciting! - Just wish there was one near me... :(

I am happy whenever any place pays people - a living wage

[ In Reply To ..]
and $15 is nothing to shout about but it's livable.

It just galls me when I hear politicians and yes usually GOP say we can't afford to pay our citizens a living wage? $7-8/hour are SLAVE wages and a shameful statement about the so-called greatest nation on earth.

How about we can't afford NOT to pay a living wage?

The hospital laundry in my area starts at - Depressed

$13 an hour, but I am "over-qualified" according to Human Resources.

the fact that we are underpaid does not make someone else's job - less worthy (nm)

initial post because some of the reaction was just out of left field in my opinion. I never said anything other than, given the skill level, being paid $15 an hour was where they value their employees and our MTSO doesn't. That's it. If you read between the lines, I am sure you will find out who killed JFK. So, enough.

I just re-read your initial post too - sm

I found the responses in the right field. You had three exclamation points after the new minimum wage and then said you wondered if they could spell medical terms.

The reactions were that their wage increase is not based on their job performance. What we wrote is the wage increase was based on cost of living. Has nothing to do with whether or not they are doing a good job. It has to do with the economy being so high up there that their wages need to be enough so they can afford to live and buy food and pay their rent. I still don't understand why that makes you feel not valued. This was not a decision made by the employees supervisors on whether or not they can do a good job.

First, I say this is great for them. It's a very expensive area to live in, so I hope this helps them.

Second, I hope its a trend and more and more areas will do this.

Third, for many of us it still would not matter as we are ICs and get paid by the line, not hour. It would be great if they could make our jobs hourly again instead of by the line.

There was no reading between the lines. You simply stated that you don't feel valued because other people got a pay raise.

P.S. - I already know who killed JFK, but you didn't state anywhere in your post (in between the lines) who killed him. :-)
Your post is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too - logical (nm)

what does spelling a word correctly have to do with them - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Lots of non-medical people can spell medical words. Doesn't take anything to research how to spell a word.

But I'll bet you and others (including me) could not do the jobs that they do. But the wage increase has nothing to do with being good at a job. It has to do with cost of living, which I've lived in Seattle before. It aint cheap that's for sure. Cost of living is going up. I think it's great they were able to get a wage increase.

If that makes you not feel valued I don't know what to say. I don't think they had you in mind when they were negotiating the increase.

It is in our best interests that all the working poor get raises to at least the cost of living. The only way MT salaries will go up is if the MTSOs have to compete with the local markets for good workers.

I am lucky enough to live in a state where employment is raising quickly and now there is even a shortage of houses for sale. This is good for me--it opens up opportunities and increases the value of my house. Things have improved so much since Obama took the reins from Bush and we ousted our old Republican governor and now have a Democratic state government.

So rather than putting down someone else, we need to cheer each other on!

Sea-Tac - WXYZ

The voters is Washington State approved that minimum wage increase in November. It only applies to baggage handlers and food service workers in the community of Sea-Tac, which serves the airport. This passed by a very narrow margin. They probably cannot spell those words, but we probably wouldn't want to do their jobs, either; try being an airport baggage handler for a day and then tell me how much you think you deserve to be paid. It is important for people to make a living wage, but I'm not sure who makes that determination. I am a resident of Washington and I also see this being passed on to the rest of us in the form of higher prices at restaurants. Airport parking will be more expensive now, as well as other airport related services, the costs have to be absorbed somehow. Also, the minimum wage in our state is 9 dollars and something per hour; it hardly seems fair to only be paying a certain portion of the population at a higher rate than the rest. I'm sure this is going to be the trend, but everything comes at a cost.

The $15 per hour does't apply to airport workers...sm - Anoni~

The airport is run by the Port of Seattle not the city of SeaTac, and therefor not subject to laws passed by the city.

I live here and it seems as if everyone is fighting it. I think it only passed by 40-some votes. Everyone I've talked to who actually works here laughs when you mention it...obviously they aren't getting 15 bucks an hour!

They shouldn't be fighting the people - who managed to get

[ In Reply To ..]
the $15 per hour, they should be banding together to TAKE A STAND that they want similar pay.

Why attack the people who need this pay instead of those in power trying to MAKE SURE the rest of America stays in slave wage land?

So, it seems we need to rethink that there are - none

people who pour drinks and deliver food are highly skilled, and I "probably could not do what they do". I pray to goodness I can because THEY couldn't step into our jobs, not ever, never without a whole lot of training. You would know this if you have been doing this job for more than a few months.
There is more too it than just - "pour drinks and deliver food"
[ In Reply To ..]
They did not get the pay raise based on whether or not they could do their job. It was a cost of living raise and they deserve it. I have a relative who works in that industry. There is more to it than just pouring drinks and delivering food. Also, there are a lot of newbees at our company who have not had a lot of training and they are doing fine and learning on the job.

Ah, Yes - That $15 Minimum Wage In Seattle.Jul 23, 2015
Liberals really should listen to conservatives, who have a much better handle on economic matters. 1.  Hardly anyone has gone off the public assistance rolls. 2.  Restaurant workers are losing the tip income they depended on, both because patrons know about the new wage, and don't feel obliged to tip, and also because some restaurants are adding a 15% surtax on the bill to cover their labor costs. 3.  People asking for LESS hours so they don't lose their welffare (!). ...

Seattle Children’s is the only pediatric hospital in King County, and offers keys services, such as cancer care, which are not available anywhere else in the region. Minimum WageOct 23, 2014
I heard a fellow on TV the other night say (quote?) a conversation at the dinner table the night before with dad telling his children "my dream for you is to some day have a minimum wage job."  The conversation was about minimum wage jobs not being the goal, but rather the stepping stone to a better job with better pay - people should strive to get out of the minimum wage jobs - not want them to be the best that they can do - with minimum wage, the employer can have more positions to offer ...

Who Makes Minimum Wage?Oct 29, 2014
Who makes minimum wage? Apparently not just your average fast food worker. The average age of a minimum wage worker is 35, not the teenager the Republicans are so afraid will raise the cost of their hamburgers.  54% of minimum wage workers labor at a full time job.  Not the teenager who works for a couple of hours after school.  27% of minimum wage workers support children.  Well, I am not sure if that is the teenager working down at the fast food joint--that probably dep ...

Are You Happy Making Minimum Wage?Feb 09, 2017

One Of The Adaptive Responses To Minimum Wage IncreasesOct 28, 2014
Businesses don't just sit idly by when wages are pushed up by artificial means such as mandatory minimum wage increases.  They take one or more of a whole range of adaptive measures that are available to them to protect their profits - cutting staff, cutting the hours of staff, demanding more of existing staff, reducing non-wage benefits and investing in labor-saving automation.  What I didn't mention is that, from a purely fiscal "spreadsheet" standpoint, the greater the (a ...
