An intelligent woman talks to Jon Stewart about birth control

Posted: Mar 8, 2012

Truth and Fact Alert! Extremist Republicans should probaby wear protective padding before clicking on this link. Jon Stewart interviews the lady from Planned Parenthood. ;

Sandra Fluke was a plant to help Obamacare. - Many fell for it. As far as birth control,

[ In Reply To ..]
you can get it for free anyway, so no one should be asking a Catholic institution to have to be involved in this.... this was only used to get people on Obama's side.. poor little Miss Fluke who will make 160 grand out of law school. Cry me a river. The whole show she presented was a sham.

oh please - nm

You've thrown around a LOT of words - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
in your post without ANY corroboration.

How do you know (quoting from your post):

1. That "this was only used to get people on Obama's side?" No, Ms. Fluke's purpose was to warn of the medical dangers that can occur that birth control pills can treat. (I happen to know from personal experience that BCPs are used for excessive bleeding. My doctor prescribed them to me in my 20s as an alternative to a hysterectomy. Thankfully, they worked. Unfortunately, this hearing was held in the presence of ALL MEN, who refused to offer a WOMAN the opportunity to speak. Again, please explain what you mean by this "only being used to get people on Obama's side."

2. "Poor little Miss Fluke who will make 160 grand out of law school?" Where do you get the "160 grand" figure? (For example, if you look at http://www.ilrg.com/rankings/law/median.php/1/desc/MSPrivate, you will see what the private and public median incomes are for colleges, including Georgetown (which Ms. Fluke attends), projecting a public median salary of $50,000 and a private medium salary of $135,000, whereas you claim it's $160,000.)

3. Sandra Fluke was a plant to help Obamacare? Who "planted" her, and how long was she working as a "plant?"

If you're going to throw around specific numbers and other allegations, please provide some corroboration in the form of links, etc. Otherwise, there is absolutely NO reason to believe anything in your post because it sounds like the product of a vivid imagination that's gone wild.

Georgetown - goldie

[ In Reply To ..]

I'm not the above poster, but I found some stats on Georgetown:

"Bar passage rate in New York: 93.8%
Percent of graduates employed 9 months after graduation: 97.1% (reported)
Median private sector salary: $160,000 (class of 2008)"

 http://www.top-law-schools.com/georgetown-law-center.html

It sounds like we've hit a brick wall.  You can make anywhere from $50,000 to $160,000 in the private sector as a grad of Georgetown.  Clear as mud.

Regarding Anita (I love Mao) Dunn, as you may know, she is the managing director at the Democratic PR firm called SKDKnickerbocker.  This firm is now representing Ms. Fluke.  Wow - who would have thunk it?

I did research it. I had not heard of the Mao thing, and wanted to understand the poster's reference. How else can I form an opinion? I am interested in hearing your opinion or learning more about it from you. Please feel free to share your opinion.
sighing as well - (you need not assume) - Conservative - not the OP
[ In Reply To ..]
Not the OP, but found your post interesting. Dunn was giving a speech while she was on the White House team. She began praising people she looked up to and respected, and she put Mao in the top 3 of those she respected most (I believe Mother Theresa was also in the 3). People found the comment extremely odd because of Mao being communist (but so is Dunn - no surprise there), but Mao was responsible for horrible atrocities carried out on the masses. Mao was behind thousands of executions of those disagreeing with him and fighting communism (which amounts to nothing more than servitude and slavery for the general public). The White House did not care about those comments, but if you check the cabinet members and a lot of Obama advisors and employees of the White House, many are communist (Van Jones, energy czar); so no surprise WH did not care. People that do think there is a connection between Dunn, communism and many White House cabinet members are not familiar with the backgrounds, biographies and written articles/books by those holding those positions. Hope this answers your question, and I am not going to tell you to research anything...LOL.
thanks for your response - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Using Mao as an example was obviously imprudent of her, but I find it hard to make the leap that this makes her a communist. Here's an interesting opinion on the debacle from a conservative website:

[ In Reply To ..]
I did not make my comment about Dunn supporting communism based on that speech about Mao. Nor was I using any website or link making assessments or observations about Dunn. I was referring spefically to her personal belief system, her personal comments, personal writings, speeches, her personal affiliations and associations. Anyone can make a comment/observation about another individual, but that comment does not make it true (just look at the comments/observations some have made about me on this board..LOL). When you examine what someone personally writes, states, gravitates to, embraces, promotes, narrates on, those personal things tell you what their core beliefs are. There is an old saying "show me the man's friends, and I will tell you about the man", and the old "birds of a feather".
Always eager to shed light on Glenn Beck factoids. - Here's your research
[ In Reply To ..]
Anita Dunn committed the cardinal sin of criticizing Fox while serving as the WH Communications Director, calling it “opinion news masquerading as journalism” (link 1). She had the gall to mock the Bill Ayers and ACORN stories since Fox called them the "biggest threats" facing our country, a preposterous statement worthy of mocking. In a CNN interview, she said Fox is a GOP communications and research operation, and (gasp) a “wing of the GOP” (link 2).

Naturally, Glenn (Happy Trails) Beck couldn’t take this lying down, so he dug up some speech Dunn made at a high school graduation where she said, “Mao and Mother Teresa…not often coupled together….are the two people that I turn to most to basically deliver a simple point, which is, you're going to make choices".

The irony, not to mention the message Dunn was conveying to the students, flew WAY over Beck’s head. In his “special report” Beck sliced off half the statement after the word “most” so he could portray her as a Maoist, then proceeded to manufacture yet another false Fox News controversy. His adoring fans, present company included, swallowed the bait hook, line and sinker.

But the most interesting aspect of this phony flap is another omission by Beck. Dunn “borrowed” the entire phrase (from “Mao” to “choices,” not Beck’s truncated version) from Lee Atwater (link 3), GOP political strategist in the 1980s and former Chairman of the RNC during Bush Sr years. My guess would be that both Dunn and Atwater, by invoking Mao and Mother Teresa, polar opposites, in the same sentence when speaking about making choices, were using metaphors to contrast good choices with bad ones. Guess which person alluded to bad choices?

THOSE are the facts….all of them. Don't despir. We learn something new everyday. That's a GOOD thing, isn't it?

Fluke - goldie

These 2 links also have a lot of Fluke's background:

http://www.lifenews.com/2012/03/05/sandra-fluke-a-self-described-professional-pro-abortion-activist/

Note to the potential flamers: It's not my intention to "bash" Ms. Fluke. She's an intelligent young woman, but I actually kind of feel sorry for her letting herself be used for a political dog-and-pony show.
JammieWearingFools and JustAGrunt? - Not again.
[ In Reply To ..]
BTDT right after this story broke. No need to go through all that again, but we did establish that, contrary to what Ms JustAGrunt would have us believe, Sandra Fluke has always been open about her reproductive rights activism. She introduced herself as such in her opening comments to Congress, which was was reported all over the airways, except perhaps at Fox. Her Georgetown academic and extraurricular activities record is exceeedingly impressive, and her decision to accept the invitation to testify before the panel was perfectly in line with her career aspirations and undergraduate studies in Public Policy Management and Gender Studies.

We also reaffirmed that in the 21st century, women are allowed to harbor such lofty aspirations without being condemned, called a slut, or marginalized as some babe in the woods who has been manipulated by the evil DC satanic forces. We concluded she is not only a credible witness, but she is also well on her way to being qualified for public office, another job STILL open to women of her caliber s near as I can tell, though it would not surprise me if the cons have some plan on their agenda to expel them from the chambers in the very near future.

No smoking gun. No horse and pony. No need to feel sorry for her. Your token complimentary comments about her are completely overshadowed by the transparent effort to belittle her with such remark, not all that different from what Rush did, just manifested in a sugar-coated passive-aggressive swipe aimed at undermining her intellect rather than her sexuality, in your parting shot. Save your pity for your own party, bent on reversing more than 50 years of progress in the women's rights arena. Birth control? Really? Come ON.

I guess all that work ethic flap about the American dream where anyone can be anything they want to be and reap the blessings of the capitalism gods if they just keep their nose to the grindstone only applies to cranky old white guys from your side of the aisle, huh?

That conspiracy theory is too silly to address, but I would be curious to know where all those free BCPs are. Any actual facts to back that up, or is this just another one of your garden variety GOP playbook sound bytes from the folks at Fox? No? Then it must be part of the Koch Bros, Inc master plan.

the length some people will go to try and prove that people who watch Fox news don't know this or that, blah, blah, blah. The more you try and post articles from sites that are not credible the more foolish and pathetic people look.

So ya don't like Fox...okay we get it. Nuff already. But whether you like it or not people who watch Fox news do know what is going on. You can post any bogus article written by hateful and spiteful people all you want. Doesn't make it the truth. What you and most Fox haters fail to get is people who do watch Fox news also watch other news. We read other news websites. Not just conservative. People who watch Fox are conservatives and independents. Few liberals (the decent ones). Something you don't understand. But for a site (Media Matters) which in itself is not a credible source to come out and say the news station they don't like it's viewers know less about current events is just hate spew and posting a piece of rubbish like this proves so many people do not have a clue. It's the ones who won't listen to Fox in addition to other ones who are less informed about current events.

So blah, blah, blah about MM - they are blah themselves and anyone who thinks Fox viewers are not informed are just plain spiteful and hateful and ignorant. If you want to talk about less informed lets talk about the stupid people who thought McCains ideas were Obamas and agreed with them all. The stupids that when they said Do you like the Obama/Palin they said yeah, she'd be a great VP. Can site you plenty of people who don't watch Fox who are very ignorant and don't know what is going on in current events. So please spare us with a bogus media matter spew. No substance and no facts to back it it.

Who ever said that Ms. Fluke "can't buy the $9 BCP"?

I know this is what is being said on Fox, where they have absolutely no clue what Ms. Fluke's story is.

She wanted to testify ON BEHALF OF A FRIEND who could no longer afford her birth control pills to treat her POLYCYSTIC OVARY SYNDROME, and the friend wound up in the hospital and had to undergo surgery.
