Expert compares free birth control to forced abortions

Posted: Aug 2, 2011

Making access to birth control easier for American women is akin to “unrestricted, unlimited sex anytime,” and China’s policy of only allowing one child per couple, according to an abortion “expert” featured on Fox News on Tuesday.

Family-PAC Vice President Sandy Rios was invited on Fox’s “America’s Newsroom” to discuss the Obama administration’s order that insurance providers cover birth control at no extra cost. Opposite her was Jehmu Greene, the former president of Women’s Media Center, who argued in favor of the plan.

Reminded that half of the pregnancies in the U.S. are unplanned — which ultimately drives up the number of abortions — Rios strongly objected.

“Why in the world would you encourage your daughters, and your granddaughters, and whoever else comes behind you, to have unrestricted, unlimited sex anytime, anywhere and that, somehow if you prevent pregnancy, that somehow you’ve helped them,” she replied.

Rios went on to compare the free birth control policy to China’s one-child policy, which requires women to have an abortion if the couple has already given birth to one child. “That is the control we’re moving toward,” she said.

I recently started watching the entire series of Mad Men. I don't know why, really. The back-to-the-60s portrayal of racism and sexism in America gives me nightmares. While obviously it is made for TV, I do wish everyone would understand the restrictive, suppressive society that existed pre-BCP. Being free to plan one's family has a much larger impact on society as a whole, than just "unrestricted, unlimited sex."

I hope we can stay in the 21st century.

They should very well cover BCP. Rep. Steve King, a Republican legislator from Iowa, is worried that the poor women will quit providing the country with cheap labor, apparently:

"Well if you applied that preventative medicine universally what you end up with is you've prevented a generation. Preventing babies from being born is not medicine. That's not— that's not constructive to our culture and our civilization. If we let our birth rate get down below replacement rate we're a dying civilization."

I don't know how Ms. Greene kept her cool. "Ideology over public health" sums it up perfectly and respectfully. I would have said it much, much differently.

I was prescribed a medication for a condition that is not health-threatening (maybe), but to relieve symptoms. The co-pay was $30.00. My income is relatively good. In the last year, I have dropped this medication (as well as my cable TV) because I am concerned about my personal financial situation. I can imagine how younger people living on much less with greater payments find it difficult to even come up with the smaller co-pays between $10 and $15 per month.

They just don't get it.

I know several people in my state, Virginia, who go to the free clinic and get their meds for $1 no matter what it may be. Also their dental for $5 a visit makes my paid-for insurance plan look sick. So if you are low income, that may be a way to go.
I wonder if that's isolated to a particular section of VA - sm

I also think we need to stop forgetting about the working poor. I know I have very little money left over by the time the bills are paid, but I still make too much money to qualify for any type of financial aid. Fortunately I'm passed childbearing age, but I can see where the $15 could be a hardship. Contrary to popular belief, a lot of people are forced to 'rob Peter to pay Paul" on a regular basis.
That is really of nice of you. Thank you. - sm

Nice to hear someone being helpful here. I don't think we have something like that here and I do not think I am that low income, but I do watch the cable bills and miscelleneous costs.

What does this have to do with Fox - Besides - sm

Because you take a medication, have good income, dropped the medication and cable TV you have come to the conclusion that Fox watchers are out of touch with the low/middle economic class? Huh? How did you come up with that data?

However, it is the Fox viewers that ARE the low/middle economic class. We are learning so much about our government and what's going on in the news around the world from Fox. No other station gives the knowledge to the people.

I think the people who watch MSNBC are out of touch with reality. It doesn't have anything to do with what economic class you fall into, it has everything to do with wanting to hate those with difference of opinion.

They don't want to pay for birth control, but at the same time they are doing their best to eliminate the safety net that would pay for all these unwanted children that they didn't want to help prevent.

Do they ever really listen to themselves?
