Affordable health care 2014

Posted: Jun 2, 2013

Totally don't understand this Obamacare.  Dtr's employer provides insurance that is extremely costly and they were told it is rated like this because there are several employees with AIDS/HIV and their expenses rate up the insurance.  Is it possible this will be effected in any way in 2014?

;

Of Course - see msg pls

[ In Reply To ..]
Of course this is going to affect everything. Obamacare is NOT free healthcare. Something bad is going to happen, because now the insurance companies (at least starting in 2014) HAVE to take everyone, including very sick people. Worst part is, the bums will get it for free. As it stands now, the bums get free health care, but now they'll be getting free insurance.

I'm wondering if the insurance companies are going to bother staying in business. If they don't take the bums and such, they'll get heavily fined by the government. This is called socialism. I think the whole idea in the government's mind is to PUSH the insurance companies out, so that we are dependent on the government. That's what happens in a dictatorship, which isn't far from socialism. Communism is next down the pike.

I'm not cutting down anyone on legitimate disability, folks, so don't go there. I'm talking about lazy people and non-citizens who choose not to work.

Look at it this way: Ain't nothing free. You don't really think Obama is going to pay for all this, do you???

take this to the politics board please - don't want to hear about

O'care here. will start an argument for sure.... unless that is what you are "trying" to do.

Not trying to start an argument - Sorry. Just being realistic

[ In Reply To ..]
Sorry, truly not starting an argument. Just stating some facts about life. I will not answer any more of these types of questions unless they're on the politics board.

I'm sorry if these facts disturb you. They disturb me, too. :(

EXCUSE ME, but this IS the politics board!! - sm

Sheesh! Talk about uninformed people!
This was moved from another board (I think it was the - Main) fyi :-)

Posts like this are the reason why many do not want to participate on - the politics board.
[ In Reply To ..]
Talk about uninformed is right! It's OBVIOUS that the post was moved.

Many of the MTs who normally post on the other boards are reluctant to participate here because of the constant obnoxiousness, which is a shame because their input here would be appreciated by many of us.

I've seen people on other boards tell rude - posters to come here.
[ In Reply To ..]
Even if no one was discussing politics.

Because everyone on the other boards knows how rude people on this board can be. It's embarrassing. We have a reputation. :(

I wish people weren't so turned off by this board, because some new voices would be really refreshing. I'm tired of going around in circles with the same people.
IMO, most of the ones here are not MTs either. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
And I'm not saying that there isn't any rudeness on the other boards on here (we all have our moments), but I'm pretty much convinced that many of the truly obnoxious on the pol. board are not MTs and have found a cozy spot here because they're catered to and allowed to be as rude as they wanna be.

It would be nice if other MTs would speak up a little on the political issues that affect us and our career (or what's left of it). Instead they're greeted with being called "uninformed." Lovely.
Yeah, nothing makes a person feel more welcome - than being called "lo-info."
[ In Reply To ..]
.
Keep in mind that "low-info" is pure regurg. You see it everywhere - in RW comments sections
[ In Reply To ..]
If anything, it's more insulting to the person using it b/c it makes their lack of creativity very apparent. Parrots don't think... just repeat what they hear. I can picture 'em staring at the computer waiting for a cracker to come spitting out.

Maybe Obama will pay for it...sm - Old Woman

Don't know how to transfer this to politic board. Sorry for inconvenience.
Inside this message is a link to help you estimate - sm

(or your daughter estimate) what the cost of her insurance for her and her children would be based in her income.

I hope you can find your answer here and am sorry for all the grief you've gotten.

It might be wise to reflect on the fact that you are one accident or illness away from being disabled yourself. And who are you to call other human beings "bums?" I am no fan of either Obama or Obamacare, but I do think a little compassion might be in order here.

You did not read - My post clearly

[ In Reply To ..]
I did not cut down anyone who legitimately needs disability.

And yes, I can so call people bums who are lazy, who want nothing more than to sponge off the government (that would be you and me paying for their everything in our taxes), and people who come here from certain countries just for the freebies in food, housing and healthcare.

That is a fact of life.

employer was totally inappropriate in that disclosure - sm

I would report that, myself. Right up the line to the insurance company and state insurance commissioner.

And I would hope this was said to several - people, otherwise

the daughter if being a snitch may lose her job. The information may not be true that was given out, just trying to give a reason for why the rates so high. People just really get me now days.

You bet employer was inappropriate - BTDT

[ In Reply To ..]
and if the person lives in a city that has any sort of AIDS advocacy group, I would report that employer to them, too. This kind of disclosure and these kinds of statements are highly inappropriate.

I am sure that - LA

people with cancer are just as costly to the health care maintenance system as are people with HIV/AIDS. It is easy to marginalize a single group, but it is not kind or socially just. I don't understand Obamacare, either. I think it is just a mess.

chances are the high rates have nothing to do - with the Affordable Healthcare Act

[ In Reply To ..]
Here's why I think this. I used to work for a small insurance agency. We had 5 people on the insurance policy. It cost the agency $2300 a month. A MONTH for that premium. It was a good policy, but still. The employees paid a portion, but the agency still shelled out 1600 a month for 5 people. This was 6 or 7 years ago.

One of the women on the plan in this family owned agency was the DIL of the owner. The plan had been in place for about 6 months when she got pregnant with a very difficult pregnancy. So, six months and her portion of the premium was about $500 a month, so they had gotten $6000 from us for her to that point. At 24 weeks in her pregnancy, she started leaking amniotic fluid and they put her in the hospital until she delivered at 31 weeks and the baby was in the NICU for another 8 weeks, give or take. All on 6000 in premium.

What happened after that? You got it. Our rates increased dramatically every year after that. We increased co pays, changed coverages slightly, but even after she left the agency and there were only 4 people being insured, it was still 1600 per month for the agency's portion.

The thing that people don't understand about group insurance policies is that the group has to take everyone, no matter what. Individual plans are much more strictly underwritten which is why it's harder to get them. Group plans take everyone who is in the group, i.e., an employee, so they take the good with the sometimes very bad.

And to the poster below who was complaining about the "bums" getting free health care - no they are not getting it for free. They may not be shelling anything out for it themselves, but you and I are paying for it with our sky high premiums and increased taxes. The hospitals and doctors have to get their money from somewhere. This, too, is not just a symptom of the Affordable Healthcare Act, as it has been going on for years and hospitals are not allowed to turn anyone away who is deemed to be in an emergent situation.

Guess we are not taking care of anyone then - because my insurance

[ In Reply To ..]
and husband's insurance is a perk of his job and we have had no cost insurance (PPI BXBS) for years now at zilch to us. Love it.

Bums and Free Health Care - my point was

[ In Reply To ..]
...that the bums are getting it for free in that they are not paying for it, we are. In our taxes, in our high insurance premiums, etc.

A single person in California will pay about $169/month - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
A single person making around $27,000 a year will pay about $169.00 per month for an average quality health plan.

The above link is a calculator to estimate cost. I am guessing most States that have done their duty to their citizens will have a similar web page.

California Insurance Exchange nightmare! - Cali resident

[ In Reply To ..]
California is one of 7 states that have received the go ahead from the US Dept. of Health to operate its own insurance exchange. At least 5.3 million could be eligable under Covered California, of those at least 2.6 million could be eligible for Govt. subsidies. Those subsidies will be available for individuals earning up to $46,000/ year and families with incomes up to 94,200/year. So where is the money coming from to subsidise all these people and that is only one state? There is also a 3 month grace period for non-payment of premiums but the insurers only have to pay for claims in the first month of that grace period, after that the docs that provide care will end up eating the costs.

Sounds like a financial fiasco to me, where is all this subsidy money supposed to come from?

Also there are tier levels available that offer varying coverage and out-of-pocket expenses. Maximum OOP expenses $6350.00 annually.

It costs $343/mo for a family of 4 making $55,000/yr in MN - sounds good to me

I Just Have One Comment About The Affordable Care ActJun 29, 2012
It seems to me that a lot of MTs feel that the MTSOs are very greedy and pay slave wages. It is my understanding that under the ACA companies with more than 50 employees will have the option of either providing medical insurance *OR* opt out and pay the less expensive penalty. I also believe that many of these MTSOs have in excess of 50 employees, particularly the larger ones like Nuance and M*Model. Just keep that thought in mind while you connect the dots. ...

Health Insurance Is A Poor Measure Of Health Care.Sep 14, 2011
