This is the throw the baby out with the bathwater theory Paul Ryan has almost destroyed the Republican party with. Instead of working to do away with the fraud and abuse done by doctors who charge for procedures and visits that didn't happen, and other abuses of the system, they decide to just dismantle Medicare as we know it.

The {{{SCARE}}} tactic is that the government is running out of money, that Medicare is going broke.

Their solution is to force elderly people who are on fixed income into the place where they will be bankrupt and lose everything they have, PLUS not have medical coverage that will save them from diseases that kill. That is a death panel that I'm not willing to fall for.

So, is it really a choice between
(1) our government going broke or
(2) elderly people going broke

or are there other solutions?

There are other solutions. We start by stopping corporate welfare. Then we bring in more revenue by getting people to pay their taxes. That amount is huge and will make a big difference.

Then we work on fraud and abuse overall, which the wealthy are fighting as if their luxurious lives depended on it, which they of course do.

No, Medicare should not be dismantled and the elderly should not shoulder the entire burden of the economic challenges our country is going through. Let's let everyone participate in bringing in revenue (taxes) and paying their fair share.

I hope people will do research for themselves - and not buy into the

[ In Reply To ..]
hear mongering Paul Ryan wants to kill granny. It is simply not true. You say "other options" and the only example you can give is corporate welfare, translated tax loopholes, and since Democrats have had control of the Ways and Means Committee (where tax loopholes are created) for 8 of the last 10 years, that tells me that Democrats are NOT serious about addressing corporate welfare. And even IF they close loopholes, that will not generate enough into the tax coffers to sustain Medicare, Medicaid, and all the other various and sundry entitlements that Democrats refuse to touch. I agree with getting people to pay their taxes. ALL people, with a flat tax. You make income, it gets taxed.

Another thing Democrats can do is re-pass the law they got passed to raid social security trust fund, and if they are so concerned about seniors, why did they do that in the FIRST place?? That was peoples' own money they paid into that fund in good faith, being told by their government that money would be there for them when the retire.

Why don't the Democrats just STOP lying, STOP pointing the finger at Republicans, and start being part of the solution rather than part of the problem?? It is bad decision making on the parts of BOTH parties that got us into this mess, finally one of them is willing to make the hard decisions to try to get us out and what do they get for the effort? Attacked by the other side who persist in NOT dealing with the problems, which is what got us here.

I am sick to DEATH of Democrats acting like they had nothing to do with the present state of affairs, while DOING NOTHING to fix the problems, and just say its all the other party's fault.

Why do you let your party get away with that?

Very well said! - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I just don't get people who put all their faith and trust into one political party when both political parties have screwed the American people from time to time. Dipping into social security is just 1 major issue that screwed many Americans. When I retire, social security won't even be there. It will be as empty as a cookie jar in an obese family's home. However, the government continues to take money out of my check for it.

Our government has proven time and time again that it cannot run anything properly without running it into the ground. Right now, if things don't change, they are going to run our country into the ground.

The democrats say republicans are the party and no and look at them. They walk out when they don't wanna vote for something. They are the ones voting no now. So voting no is okay now? Is this another double standard? They continually say that republicans are using fear tactics and look at them...."republicans wanna kill gramps and granny." Sounds like fear tactics to me...but I guess that is okay because they are democrats, right?

They love to talk about making people pay their fair share of taxes but how many democratic politicians have been busted for NOT paying their taxes? I guess that is okay though, huh?

Both political parties are to blame for our current situation but right now...the democrats are in control and they are crushing us.

Well, it's true. Democrats didn't cause this financial disaster and - it is the fault of the Republicans

[ In Reply To ..]
It is what it is. We have to try to fix what is broken, but it is going to take time and it sure isn't going to be easy. These bad decisions the Bush administration made have consequences. We certainly don't want to add Paul Ryan's mistakes on top of everything else. His ideas will bankrupt many elderly people and make all but the richest elderly people much poorer. That is unacceptable.
Please stop fabricating. - What started this
[ In Reply To ..]
financial disaster was two arrogant Democrats...Barney Frank and Chris Dodd. What you said is an outright fabrication, so either you are just repeating what you have been told and have not researched it yourself, or you know very well what caused it and are just flat-out fibbing. Fact remains, still not the truth.

Have you even read the plan you are talking about? If you haven't, that is unacceptable. But that never stops you guys, does it? Whatever it takes, right? Take no responsibility and blame everybody else? That might be okay for a 5-year-old but NOT for a major political party who has made it part of their platform. And to be proud of it...that takes a special breed, gotta admit.

You think this makes you appear to be intelligent? so, genius, what is YOUR plan for saving Medicare, because without a plan, NONE of us will have it in the future. Instead, use your usual scare tactic nonsense. You have nothing else to say -pathetic.

I must have missed the part - sm

where he said "dismantle." I think the term he used was reform....that same term Obama used with Obamacare.

I do agree with you that we need to go through the fraud and abuse and try and do something there as well.

I don't see where saying our country could go bankrupt is a scare tactic. At this point, it seems very feasible unless we make some major changes or have you NOT noticed our 14 trillion dollar deficit?

I think you have taken the democratic rhetoric and run with it. I agree with Ryan that if we do what Obama wants, prices will continue to go up and we won't have enough money to support Medicare. Just look at what RomneyCare did to Massachusetts. Obamacare was modeled after that and health care prices have sky rocketed and cost that state a lot of money.

Besides, I agree with Ryan...I'd rather be able to make choices about the medical care I receive instead of having a government panel making decisions on what my health care plan will and won't pay for.

manipulation of words - not as funny though as the republicans presenting it as giving little old people "freedom to chose" their own insurance. I'm 35 and find it very difficult to find decent insurance with no health problems. Give them a voucher and set them free. OK.

Well, just when I thought I had seen the - goofiest statement of the
[ In Reply To ..]
day, here comes this one. First...social Security is not a "benefit." People paid their hard-earned money in to the trust fund, on the promise from the government that money would never be touched. It was holding it to be paid out for retirement. Well...guess what. Democrats passed a law to raid that trust fund and THAT is why it is broke, so please....DON'T tell me that Democrats have my best interests at heart. I have not sold my soul to a poltitical party and I KNOW better.

As to Medicare...nothing much to turn down. Please do tell me, facing the deficit, the devaluation of the dollar...all that, and you have any faith at all that Medicare and Social Security can be sustained? You do realize that you cannot tax corporations enough to pay for it, right? Not even close.

And again, the poster child for the kind and compassionate Democrat...how dare you disagree with us. You deserve whatever you get.

Why don't YOU put YOUR money where your mouth is. Ask Obama to start with his corporate welfare cleanup with his advisor from GE's company....record profits, will pay hardly any taxes, he made millions because he offshored half of GE's workforce. Now YOU Tell ME the Democrats are concerned about corporate welfare. I would say you deserve what you get; however....you are in the same boat the rest of us are, and NONE of us deserved the royal shafting the Democrats have given us...not even you who support them so blindly.

There's not a good argument that can be made for that. It isn't your fault that you weren't able to provide one.
Now there is a conspiracy theory to end all - conspiracy theories...
[ In Reply To ..]
and a LIE to boot. Please give any kind of credible proof of your statement. Just sayin.
That's exactly what has been presented - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
The plan is in two parts.

Dismantle Medicare
Give corporate taxbreaks.
The plan does not call for dismantling - Medicare. What do
[ In Reply To ..]
think all those waivers the Obama admin gave to unions and corporations for sections of Obamacare?? Same thing, but okay if he does it to grease the way for HIS health care system, right? Even if it costs we the people MORE, those unions and corporations are going to do just fine. Pot, you are blacker than the kettle at this point.

Obama is counting on dismantling Medicare Advantage to help pay for Obamacare. What about that?

You have not read the plan, right? You have just read some far left synopsis of it, right?

That being said...please enlighten me. What is the Dem plan for making Medicare solvent? It has already been said that just taxing the rich more and addressing "corporate welfare" which they have never done, could have done when they had control of the White House and both houses of Congress if they were really interested in doing so....

Listen, you can turn off all idependent thought and giggle while the DNC blows air up your skirt, but I care more about my country than that.
The effect of Ryan's plan absolutely dismantles Medicare - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Medicare Advantage needs to be dismantled. There are horror stories about that one. Anything they can do to get rid of it and get something more in keeping with the spirit of Medicare will be fine with me.
Again...what is the Dem plan to guarantee - nm
[ In Reply To ..]
seniors that the status quo (which is what the Democrats seem comfortable with) is sustainable? What happens when they don't even have $7000 to spend?

Why isn't that as big a concern for Obama as Arab American relations?

Again...you tell me everything that is wrong with Ryan's plan but cannot give me a viable answer to any Democrat alternative....

As to Medicare Advantage needing to be dismantled....might want to run that by AARP, who offers a plan to its members. I guess they haven't heard the horror stories. Perhaps you could enlighten them.
Oh, it's the old 'Death Panel Republican fear tactic again - when the real fear is
[ In Reply To ..]
The real fear is that the Medicare most people have planned for and expected all their work lives won't be there for them. The plan that was to allow them to have a respectable retirement won't pay for their medical care, meaning they will lose their homes, do without food, lose any retirement they have, just to pay for medical expenses. Yes, I am afraid of that.
Do you even know what the plan of - the Democrats is to
[ In Reply To ..]
make Medicare solvent, because it is insolvent and unsustainable in its present form. Even the Democrats admit that. So, you don't like Ryan's proposal. What is the Democrat's proposal? Do nothing and ride it out until the country goes broke and the government can't meet its debt obligations, much less pay entitlements? Does that sound like a good idea to you? Aren't you afraid of that?
Get the corporations to pay their taxes - Yes.
[ In Reply To ..]
That's all we need to do. Stop the abuse.
so what is the other option? Lie to them - and tell them it's gonna
[ In Reply To ..]
be okay and then when the economy really tanks and the dollar loses its value and the government can't pay its debt MUCH LESS the entitlements...what then? Instead of spending all this time attacking Paul Ryan, why don't they come up with a credible one of their own? Because they don't intend to, not politically expedient in an election year.

It is exactly this kind of stuff that got us into the fix we are in now. Can you really not see that?

And, frankly, as someone who will be a little old person in the not too distant future, looking at what the government has done with Medicare and with Social Security, I would rather have a voucher that is good than a promise to pay that ISN'T. This government in general and these Democrats in particular have done absolutely nothing that would make me want to depend on them for ANYTHING in my golden years.

And, above all, I wish that they would STOP treating me like I am stupid. I know what Paul Ryan's plan says. THAT is what Democrats fail to understand. There are millions of us out here who are NOT stupid, and we do not appreciate being treated as if we were.
I had a famous quote about that - Forrest Gump

I believe in some of those what you call entitlements - as in food for babies
[ In Reply To ..]
I really don't know what happened to that social security money. I doubt very much that you do either. If any money went to feed hungry babies, I can't argue with that.
Well...I seriously doubt if the Democrats - hijacked the funds for
[ In Reply To ..]
the defense budget, do you? LOL.

Okay, if you are all for taking money away from seniors to feed babies, then please ask your Democrat cohorts to stop screaming that Republicans are out to dismantle Social Security when they have already stolen the money to feed babies.

Thanks so much.

If Ryan gets his way, Medicare patients will not get acceptable medical care - That is not okay

If you're rich, you'll be fine. I think America prefers to rise to a higher standard than kicking our old people under the bus.
Please post which part of Ryan's plan shows - Medicare patients will

not get acceptable medical care. Have you read it?

[ In Reply To ..]
I know that many people want to believe that there is a person, in this case named Paul Ryan, who is brilliant and has answers to our problems. His answers just haven't been well thought out. They benefit the wealthy and take money from the rest of us. That's not okay with me.

No insurance company is going to accept a patient who has a $7,000 voucher, because they know that older people get sick. Sometimes sickness results in hundred of thousands or even millions of dollars of expenses. Under Ryan's plan, that's all you get. If you get sicker than $7,000 just do the best you can.

I wish I could believe you....but I don't. - Can you PLEASE tell
[ In Reply To ..]
me how Obama plans to fund Medicare going forward? And don't say taxing the rich more or stopping corporate welfare because a simple look at the numbers shows you that is not possible. It will take much more than that. So please...how do you think Obama is going to pay your Medicare if he can't pay the debt this country owes?

I really want to know where your confidence comes from. I would like to believe he has a clue.
I thought Obamacare was going to - whip the insurance
[ In Reply To ..]
companies into shape with his clearinghouse thing and make insurance affordable. So now you are saying that is not going to happen and insurance companies are going to just keep on doing what they have always done?

You can't have it both ways, and neither can he.

Okay, I know why you oppose the Ryan plan, those I disagree with your characterization of it. Please explain to me what the Democrat plan is, and don't say corporate welfare or tax the rich. Because if you look at the numbers there as you told ME to do, you will see that is not anywhere near enough to make Medicare solvent.

What is going to hurt the income of Seniors is the Democrats' raiding of the trust fund to pay for other things, instead of making the hard decisions THEN to control spending. So please don't tell me how the Democrats have my best interests at heart, because I don't buy it.

We are at a point where hard decisions HAVE to be made, and only one party is talking about doing it. When I hear Democrats talking in REAL terms about what has to be done and not doing the same old eevillll rich and eviklll corporation stuff...I might believe them. They KNOW the hard decisions have to be made, they just don't want to make them, especially in an election year.

We have a 14.3 trillion dollar deficit, the value of the dollar is going to slide...we are in a debt crisis. Do you really not understand that?

Taking from the Middle Class (benefits, Medicare, social security, etc.) and giving to the rich (corporations and otherwise) is what the Republicans do. They kick the poor when they are down. They abuse the elderly. They really do. I almost stopped myself because it sounds so dramatic, but then I thought about it more and, it's really true.
Please give me specific examples of how - Republicans have taken
[ In Reply To ..]
from the middle class and kicked the poor when they are down and abused the elderly. I will then give you specific examples of how the Democrats have done the same thing.

I cannot believe that in this age of the internet and access to information that there is an American with access who will so believe political party propaganda rather than find out for themselves. If you had done any research on your own you would KNOW your statement is not true. I know some Republicans and I have never known any of them to kick anybody when they were down, abuse the elderly, or steal from the middle class. They ARE the middle class. They also know not to believe ANYTHING a political party TELLS them.

Democrats actually are responsible for the social security mess. When that program was created, the Democrat President who it was created under assured the American people the Social Security Trust Fund money that we were paying into for our retirement would NEVER be used for anything else. It was a Democrat majority under a Democrat president when the law was passed to override the law that created SS so that they could dip into it to pay for other things. So, if you are going to be fair, you need to blame the Democrats for that one, and every Dem administration AFTER that for not paying it back like they said they were going to but never did.

Unbelievable the degree of disconnect from what is really going on. Don't you ever wonder if what they tell you is the truth???
obviously if the Ryan - plan were made law

Obama's reform could not coexist with it. I thought that was obvious. I'll try to explain things more carefully in the future.
Please do explain it. - Thank you. nm
