Accidental Shooting at Gun Show Marks Gun Appreciation Day

In an accident with uncanny timing, two people were injured at a gun show in Raleigh, North Carolina, when someone's gun went off after they accidentally left a round in the chamber when checking it into storage at the event. Saturday happens to be Guns Across America, during which gun-rights activists protest gun control at state capitols. It's also Gun Appreciation Day, which apparently consists of gun enthusiasts shooting guns and going to gun shows, but with more American flags than usual. "Beware of media traps," the Gun Appreciation Day website warns, because what you have to fear at events like this is the media, not the questionably handled firearms.

The NTSB is a good example on the federal level, as transportation safety needs to be monitored, evaluated, and improved on an ongoing basis. On the private-sector level, I can think of many fields of endeavor where accidents are examined in order to continue to improve quality assurance.

Take, for example, skydiving periodicals that detail the specifics of parachuting accidents in order to heighten the awareness of enthusiasts and to contribute to the safety of the sport.

It's a good idea to look at accidents, why they happen, and how they can be prevented. I would think that folks on either side of the gun argument would be in favor of this.

So does responsible gun ownership. It's just plain common sense that ongoing universal permitting, licensing and certification procedures for owners, dealers and instructors are all levels of reasonable regulation where gun safety should be front and center. It is mind-numbing to me that the NRA has been so instrumental in preventing the development of a national database for so long that any rational person would understand is absolutely vital in valuable data collection that is designed to facilitate efficient and effective functioning of law enforcement, legislative bodies and academic inquiries that take aim at reducing lethal outcomes from accidental injuries and fatalities in addition to those arising from criminal violence.

What I find interesting is that, let's say it were true, the fact that the kind of person who would shoot themselves or others because they thought Obama would secretly approve could get a gun, is still a good argument for gun control in my mind.

the weapon of choice was the musket. Think about it. The single thing that I have the most problem with is irresponsible gun owners who do not lock their guns up. Along with second amendment rights comes responsibility. Guns should be registered and the gun owner held accountable if his gun is stolen and used to commit a crime.

As I am sure you already know, I wasn't and no one is talking about taking away all guns. Limits on military or pseudo-military grade hardware, universal background checks, holding gun companies and distributors accountable for violations of the law and ammo magazine limits. None of this is against the Second Amendment as our Founding Fathers had no idea that every moron would one day be able to own something that could kill dozens of people. A drive by shooting back then involved a single musket pellet fired from a horse.

As for people on this board and elsewhere wanting to take away your first amendment right, who are you talking about? No one cares that you're conservative. No one is going to take your rights away. But your rights don't come free. This country was not founded on anarchy. It was a country of law and order to protect one another. If you honestly think that gun laws lead to tyranny, go to countries without gun laws. There's over a hundred of them. They're all utopias. Paragons of safety and justice.

Guns don't prevent death. You are 4.5 times more likely to be shot if you own a gun. 450%! Guns don't prevent tyranny. Guns don't promote free speech. Guns don't make you look cool. Alright, they do, but that's not good enough. You can always take up a safer habit like smoking or heroin to replace it.

because of an accident involving a gun...heck...we might as well take away all motor vehicles too then. They cause accidents. No planes either. We have to do away with jungle gyms at the park too...accidents happen there too. No more shoe strings...you could trip and cause an accident.

I guess I truly don't understand how some of you think doing away with guns will solve our problems. Taking away guns from law-abiding citizens won't stop criminals from obtaining them illegally and using them against the now unarmed law-abiding citizens. Just look at Chicago. That right there is proof that strict gun laws DO NOT work.

I grew up in a home where my dad had 3 shotguns on a gun rack hanging in the backroom. One was ALWAYS kept loaded. From the time my siblings and I were little, we were taught that guns can kill and are dangerous. We weren't even allowed to point toy guns at other people. We were taught how to respect the guns and how to use them safely. Not one of us ever shot ourselves, each other or anyone else. My brother owns several guns and carries one in his vehicle...he has never shot anyone.

If you don't want to own a gun, that is your right but don't stomp on our right to own one either. I don't think anyone disagrees with background checks. I also believe that we should look more into mental illness as the ones who use guns for truly horrible crimes usually have some sort of mental illness.

We also have a huge problem with people and kids watching violent movies and playing violent games. I believe that is very harmful to our society as well.

If people are intent on killing others, taking guns away won't stop them. Cain killed Able with a rock. You wanna ban rocks too? How about knives? Baseball bats are crazy dangerous too. You could crack someone's skull open with that. Hair dryers must go too because someone could eletrocute themselves if used in water.

Come on people...guns don't kill people. People kill people and unfortunately accidents do happen.

There isn't a whole lot of trust on this. Looks like an off duty cop, in an unmarked car, but wearing a uniform, saw 3 young adults on a corner. One took off running, officer made a U-turn and chased him, eventually on foot. Police say kid turned and shot at officer 3 times, officer shot 17 times. Others say kid was not armed.
