A bipartisan post - How long are we the

Posted: Jul 31, 2017

I think we can all agree we have been duped by all our politicians at every level.

I'm willing to bet most everyone knows someone who works construction who has been out of work at some poiint while foreign auto companies are bringing in construction workers from other countries to build auto plants.  This is a disgrace to say the least!

This has been going on for decades so includes both sides of the aisle and probaby in between.  These factories are creating jobs for auto workers but why weren't/aren't they required to use US workers to build them?

;

It's probably a union thing - sm

From your linked article:
"I'm angry. Angry," said Daniel Travancic, who has worked for the Local 104 sheet metal workers union out of San Jose, California for more than a decade.

"There's lots of guys out there still looking for work in the United States," he said. "And now we have how many thousands and thousands of East European workers working here, and they're abused, too? Who lets this happen?"

My question is what would it cost to hire unionized American workers vs. hiring, housing, and feeding non-unionized foreigners?

CBS doesn't mention that and probably won't in their documentary. That would seem to be a critical piece of the puzzle.

Another question, should the auto companies be forced by the government to use US workers to build their factories?

We will continue to be duped until we expect and demand the media report on all sides of an issue, especially the side they are politically opposed to reporting.

Seriously! So the other side of the story - might be that companies

[ In Reply To ..]
should be allowed to pay us say $50 a week to build buildings so they don't have to bring in foreigners to do the work while their CEOs make mega-million dollar salaries and bonuses.

Anything to keep the wealthy wealthy and the people in this country in the welfare lines. Let's not forget that it is people with this thinking that criticize people on welfare and say they should be out there working yet can't get jobs because we have to prop up those billionaires.

Your question: "Another question, should the auto companies be forced by the government to use US workers to build their factories?" My answer is damn right they should if they're building them in this country. If they don't want to pay union wages, there are many companies that aren't union that could be used since many of the unions have been broken anyway.

And if they decline to build factories in the US? - What then? sm

I'm pretty sure I know how this will play out. (You've already shown yourself to be slightly hyperbolic with your "$50 a week" comment.)

We've already seen this movie. It's called the past 8 years. I'm sure you remember:
1. The great press Obama got by declaring increased corporate regulation and more fairness for workers.
2. Obama criticizing the "greedy corporations" sitting on trillions of dollars and not investing in America.

Do you think those two things are unrelated?
Yea, that was the excuse when Obama was - in office. This was going
[ In Reply To ..]
on before Obama was in office. There was always some excuse for the corporations to take jobs overseas, not pair fair wages, etc. You need to go back a lot further than Obama to answer the questions but the simple answer is corporate greed.
Just quoting from what I saw in media reporting - As for what we see now... sm

Trump announces he's cut "job-killing regulations" Obama put in place.

The MSM (like CBS) announces that factories are being built in the US with foreign labor.

In comparison, I don't recall any stories on who was building Solyndra's new factory, in 2009 or 2010. Before they went defunct in 2011.

Still, I tend to wonder how much of the article itself is true. Some key quotes:

"...foreign workers being used to build sections of U.S. auto plants." Not the entire plant?

"Our investigation led us to an apartment complex in Spartanburg, South Carolina, where it appeared workers from Slovenia and Croatia were being housed by their employer." Appeared?

Work sites are listed as being in Alabama and Spartanburg, South Carolina. But the out of work union steelworker they quoted is from San Jose, California. Why didn't they interview angry, out of work, construction workers in Alabama and South Carolina?
Fair enough. I will do more research - It is not the first time I

I have heard of such goings on, bringing in foreign workers to do work instead of hiring Americans. But, you do bring up some valid points on this particular story.

No Paragraphs In My Long PostFeb 02, 2013
My long self-pitying post was rendered unreadable by the loss of paragraphs but I did have a question. I was wondering if anyone out there worked full time while undergoing chemotherapy? I was denied SSDI and then denied again on appeal as they feel that a person with cancer, who has undergone abdominal exenteration and is undergoing months of chemotherapy is not sick enough to warrant disability and should be able to work full time as a medical transcriber (which I absolutely cannot do.) ...

Bipartisan LamentOct 29, 2012
I've been thinking about the latest twists and turns in American politics.  The vast problems facing the country as a whole and diametrically opposed Republican and Democrat Parties.  The intractable nature of the argument.  And here I am complaining about it and yet I'm just as partisan.  Anyone who's read my posts knows I'm a liberal, even though I view the Democratic Party as a massive failure.  I look at these two parties we have and shake my head ...

This Is A Bipartisan ProblemMay 15, 2017
We are going to advance ourselves right into oblivion if something doesn't stop this constant need for better and better technology.  Though I know it is human nature to want to make things better, I have noticed in my lifetime more and more dangerous situations created from advancing technology to the levels we have and are continuing to do. This article mentions the FBI, Homeland Security, etc., are all concerned at what is going on and how bad the situation is with cyberattacks.&nb ...

Well, I'm So Glad This Congress Is Being BipartisanJan 19, 2011
I'm listening to the health care repeal debate. Weiner, as usual, was a little hyperactive during his debate point.  The speakers I found most interesting were the doctors that have been elected to Congress. All of them are against the law the way it stands.  It just came across the bottom of the screen that if the health care repeal passes, REID will NOT schedule it on the Senate side.  That's like saying to heck with what the people want, (I don't want ...

Bipartisan Deficit CommissionFeb 06, 2010
Last month, a bipartisan commission went down in flames in the Senate after 7 republicans who sponsored the bill voted against it. Now, Obama is putting together a bipartisan commission and the republicans are still complaining it's not good enough. Obama is telling them to come to the table and present their ideas. They are saying no. And then accusing him of not listening. The problem seems to be that the republicans expect Obama to follow their platform (tax breaks for big busines ...

Does Anyone Want A Long (and I Mean Long!) History Lesson On Gridlock?Sep 12, 2012
I had seen an old newspaper article called "Gridlock shows signs of thawing" by Robert Novak back in 2011 so I've been mainly focusing on finding info on gridlock and the effects on lawmaking, Congress and the Presidents in the past few days.  I did compress the various articles I found, trying not to be partial to one side or the other. If you want to read it, I can post it tomorrow.   ...

Healthcare's Bipartisan Problem. Almost Half Of Healthcare SpendingJan 13, 2017
healthiest half of the population consumes only 3% of health care costs. The only alternative would appear to be taxpayer subsidies. It is next to impossible, politically, to take away freebees once in place. Income redistribution continues to increase. The 2010 health law, also known as Obamacare, forced insurers to sell coverage to anyone, at the same price, regardless of their risk of incurring big claims. That provision was popular. Not so were rules requiring nearly everyone to have ins ...

After Reading The Jesus Is Coming Post And Then Hare Krishna Mantra Post...Apr 21, 2010
I was wondering exactly what kind of "faith" board this is. The poster, Catherine, in the Jesus is Coming thread felt this was the "wrong forum" for posting one's religious beliefs while another posterior in that thread says that this "faith" board is meant to be all inclusive meaning persons of all faiths can post their beliefs here. I guess I wrongly assumed that the use of the word "faith" meant Christianity as it is my belief that Christianity is the only valid belief system worshiping ...

How Long Are They Going To Let TheseMay 08, 2017
I'm dying to here the Trump supporters support of this since they support everything this administration does. Boy are they taking us for a ride. By the way, he still has stock in the company. ...

How Long Should I Ask To Take Off For HysterectomyAug 25, 2016
I have a hysterectomy coming up, and the doctor recommended taking a week off and am wondering if that if an excessive amount of time.  It will be done robotically and endoscopically and my first major surgery.  My work day is not overly busy (about 4-6 hours of dictation), but usually comes in right as I am going to bed and through the night, and has to be in by 2 PM my time, so there isn't an entire 24 hour turnaround to play with.  Can anyone give me a timeline of how long ...

I Need A Shoulder To Cry On (long Vent)Jan 10, 2012
I am sitting here so depressed. I have two adult daughters and five grandkids. My oldest daughter is a widow (her husband was killed in Afghanistan in 2005) with two kids. She is a professional photographer. She took a picture of my other daughter and her kids which I fell in love with and when I asked her if I could have one, she said the price is $80 (black and white, 8 x 10). Needless to say with my lowly wages as a transcriptionist I could not afford it. She has become miss high and mighty e ...
