seeing little lights left visual field

Yesterday I started seeing what looks to me like a tiny string of blue Christmas lights in my left visual field. It happens when I turn my head. At first I noticed it when I was sitting in bed with a lamp on so I thought somehow it was a reflection off of my glasses. It continued throughout the day. Not constantly or anything but I experienced it maybe 10-15 times. Then when I woke up this morning I noticed it again. I have been up for about 4 hours now and have seen it maybe 6 or 7 times. Anybody experience anything like this before?

it is probably vitreous detachment; look it up. Happens to people after 40 but you need an ophthalmologist to verify that your retina is intact. Call ASAP. My MD got off the golf course to come check mine out. Dont go to the ED; they dont do eyes. Call your ophthalmologist and if you dont have one, get one ASAP. It is probably benign but you want to make sure.

it was a vitreous detachment. Do get it checked out though. I remember the doctor telling me to be careful while it's in the process of detaching not to jump, run, or do anything that jerks my head around to guard against taking part of the retina along with the detaching process.

A year later I had the same thing in the other eye. It's not really a big deal and once the process is complete the flashing goes away.

Same thing happened to me - scared me half to death

About 5 months ago, I walked into a dark room and started seeing what looked like lightning in the outside periphery of my right eye. I also thought it was a reflection of a street light off my glasses. Then I had a HUGE floater appear suddenly that felt like a boulder. This was on a weekend day, so I called my optometrist at home (small town...he wasn't angry; in fact, he was really kind while he listened to my sobs/panic), so he fit me into his schedule first thing Monday a.m. He stated that it was a vitreous detachment and felt that the retina was intact, but he's not an MD, of course, so he referred me to a retina specialist. I found the examination to be moderately painful (scleral-depressed exam...ouch) but there was no retinal tear, for which I was grateful. He said I should follow up in a couple of months, but I cancelled the appointment because I couldn't afford it (in between insurance policies). I learned that (1) nearsighted people get this more often than farsighted because of the shape of the eyeball, and (2) once one eye is symptomatic, you can pretty well expect the other eye to do the same thing. The light flashes eventually stopped, but I still have a huge floater. Apparently this will diminish over time.

By the way, I'm 62 years old.

My mother had floaters. They turned out to be cholesterol deposits. She had trouble with peripheral vision, forget what you call it (it began with an A). She later went on to have a stroke. She had had the carotid Doppler and would not have the surgery.

As far as flashing lights sometimes bright and sometimes black spotty things, I used to get them just before a migraine would happen. Often times that covered both eyes and nearly made it impossible to see much. I would take a couple of Tylenol and it would leave. I don't get them now though.

Diabetes and hypertension pose higher risk for vitreous detachment. - sm

It wouldn't hurt to get screened for those just to be on the safe side. I have both conditions under good control with meds but that was not always the case. I got those symptoms around age 63 so 37 seems on the young side to me for that to be happening. Just a thought.

As I see it, one problem on this board is citing acurate sources. It's really not our fault as informed voters. It's the fault of the media - radio, TV, internet, newspapers, etc. For example, if a poster here wants to discuss "Fast and Furious," the only sources are going to be right-leaning sources (RLS), since the left-leaning sources (LLS) are not covering the story.
