Only three days left

Posted: Dec 28, 2013

Don't forget - only three days left to get your incandescent light bulbs, if you can find them.;

Thanks for the reminder! - Trampled underfoot

I just ordered a case from our local electrical supply company.

Thanks! I had no clue - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
I hadn't heard about that at all (and why 4 dislikes?). Thanks for the info.

BTW, I did find a company that will still be selling them. An article said that they are "capitalizing on a loophole in the law that doesn't ban what are called "rough service" bulbs".

Another freedom being stripped away - sm

Well, this one is Bush's fault so don't try to - sm

blame Obama.

And in my opinion, this one is a very big deal due to the danger if they break.

Actually - NK

the manufacture and import of 40- and 60-watt bulbs will stop in 2014, and any left in stock will continue to be sold. I will continue to use my CFLs as I have for the last 3 years, without having to replace even one of them even though a couple of them are on for 10-12 hours a day. A welcome relief from having to replace incandescent bulbs every few months.

pfft.. - mine don't last long

[ In Reply To ..]
Yes the old fashioned bulbs burn out quicker than CFLs, but I have NEVER had an expensive CFL last longer than 6 months at best

They're a joke - see msg

[ In Reply To ..]
I think it's just nonsense. They do not last near as long as "they" say they do, and they are not environmentally friendly in terms of disposing of them.

At least we should be given a choice on what we want, not have the government tell us which bulb to use.

Yep, another piece of freedom stripped away.
They can be pretty toxic - Anony
[ In Reply To ..]
You almost need a hasmat suit if one breaks, since they're full of mercury. I also read that in some cases they can catch fire. I stocked up on 60 watts, which is really kind of dim for the kitchen, and I can just picture the greasy mess the curly ones will in the hood over my stove.
Getting a bunch of 40 and 25 watts for me - 60 is like nuclear to me LOL
[ In Reply To ..]
When we moved in someone left a ton of 100 watt bulbs. Man, nothing like lighting up the whole city with one bulb. 60 is way to bright and even 40. 25 don't last that long. I will find an alternative light source before I bring a toxic bulb in my house.

I've got one a CFL in my kitchen that's - been going strong for 6 years

[ In Reply To ..]
and counting. I need a bright light in the living room, and I recently bought a 100W CFL for that light fixture. When I first turned on the light, it was dim. I was disappointed, but then realized that after a minute or so, the light was brighter than even the 100W incandescent that was in it before. It just takes a little longer for the fluorescent to hit its full brightness. I think they're worth the extra initial cost. Also, if you drop them, they don't break as easily, if at all.
I actually prefer them rather than incandescent. - Got them in every room to save
[ In Reply To ..]
On my electric bill. Many countries have already banned the incandescent light bulbs starting back in 2005.
I have been using the CFL bulbs for years - Love them
[ In Reply To ..]
I leave the bulb in my utility room on all the time. It's where I come in from the garage at night and its where the cat litter boxes are. I've been in this house for almost 16 years and I think I have only changed that bulb 3 times, with the last time being about 6 months ago.

I haven't bought incandescent bulbs in over a decade.

Zero electric bill - Cheap and green

[ In Reply To ..]
We recently built a remote cabin. It would have cost a pretty penny to bring power to it, so we put in solar. All of our light bulbs are LED, and all appliances have been chosen for energy savings. I love not paying an electric bill every month.

Years ago, I began converting our city home to CFLs. The electric company gave free CFLs to reduce stress on the grid and I purchased more (check with your electric company for rebates). By replacing light bulbs and switching off power to as many appliances that use low power constantly (i.e., computers, audio/TV), I reduced our electric bill at least $15 to $20 per month. I am now converting over to LED as needed. Purchased some lovely LED Christmas lights this year.

We drop the CFLs off at the recycling center and another added benefit to having solar is that the power does not go out during a storm. I have not yet had an LED burn out.

LED Christmas lights - Trampled underfoot

[ In Reply To ..]
I find the LED Christmas lights to look "cold". They're not the cheerful light of the incandescent ones.

And the CFLs indoors give me a headache. So thanks, Big Brother, for deciding what I can use in the future.

Suggest using LED lightbulbs in your regular fixtures - No flicker, no headache

[ In Reply To ..]
Some newer lightbulbs are LEDs. A whole bunch of them in one bulb. They turn on right away and, since they are not fluorescent, do not flicker.

Perhaps that will help.

You can string multiple strings of LEDs - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
into a circuit that would blow out if you used regular incandescent bulbs. Love the LEDs and not paying huge electric bills. Bought an LED television, too. Much cheaper to have on than other screens.
Sorry, I was not suggesting using regular LEDs - on a Christmas tree
[ In Reply To ..]
The person above me, I thought, was saying regular CFL bulbs gave her a headache. I suggested using LED lightbulbs instead of CFLs. In regular lamps and fixtures, not on a Christmas tree.

Sorry for the confusion.
They work great on a Christmas tree--much safer - Burning candles
[ In Reply To ..]
LEDs work great on trees because they "burn" much cooler, lessening any danger of fire. I got some LED net lights and hung them between 2 sets of sheer curtains on a large window. The effect was really nice and diffused.

Can you imagine they used to burn candles on trees at Christmas?!?
Yes, I KNOW they work fine on Christmas trees - Sheesh
[ In Reply To ..]
The discussion was about REGULAR LIGHTING. Not Christmas trees.

Do you people bother reading the posts before commenting? Or do you just respond to the subject line?
My mom's family used to burn real candles - in Germany
[ In Reply To ..]
I guess in Germany, they don't get the tree weeks before like we do. Or at least they didn't back when she was growing up. They would go out and cut a fresh tree 1 or 2 days before Christmas, and so it wasn't dry, like our trees are. She misses the candles. Like, a lot. She has Christmas tree lights that are shaped like giant candles. :)

This other man happened to show up and grabbed the pit, held him while hubby untangled our dogs leashes & picked up our chi, headed back to our apt. Other man then let the pit go.
