anyone dealing with fibroids/removal?

Posted: Feb 8, 2016

Im petite with an XL fibroid, again.  First was removed with robotic myomectomy.  3-1/2 years later same thing but placement makes it larger.  16week uterus or so

Anyone else have a hysterectomy and share any stories.  Thanks.

I was supposed to have a vaginal hysterectomy. My fibroids made me bleed all the time really heavy around my regular cycle.

I ended up having an abdominal approach because one of the fibroids was too close to my bladder.

I was just glad I didn't bleed anymore.

I had several fibroids, the largest 23 cm. Periods lasted 11 days. Clothes did not fit well. I had myomectomy and glad I did as I didn't have such a protruding abdomen.

Later I had a TAH/BSO because my mother died from ovarian cancer. It took a couple of weeks postop to start to feel better. I'm so glad I did it. No more periods. I had mild hot flashes and took a low dose estrogen for that temporarily.

The only reason I would not have a hysterectomy is if I might still want to have children, but I clearly did not want another pregnancy.

I chose not to have mine removed--I was in my early 40s, and the doc told me that doing just a myomectomy is actually more invasive than a hysterectomy, and that they could grow back. He said since I wasn't going to have any children, I could just wait until I had symptoms and have a hysterectomy...which I did when I started bleeding abnormally.

My 'roids were too big to go vaginally, so we did the abdominal thing. I was back to work within a week of surgery.

One thing: Make sure you DO NOT take birth control pills when you have fibroids. They make them grow worse.

Best thing I ever did. I was off work for 9 weeks and felt like a whole new person when I went back to work.

Now that surgery is scheduled. Any tips on what I need postop at home to ease recovery?
Well, here's one funny little thing that happened - - (sm)

to me postop, that the doc didn't mention, but my aunt said it happened to her, too:

I'd been home maybe 2 days, and late at night was sitting in the living room reading a book. I suddenly felt something warm oozing out of a tiny corner of the incision. When I looked, it was thick, pink-colored stuff. I freaked out and called the surgeon in the middle of the night. He said it was normal, that sometimes it happened when a little bit if fluid/blood etc. built up under the incision and later drained out. He said to put warm compresses on it until it stopped draining. He also apologized for forgetting to tell me that might happen. By the next afternoon it was fine - no more drainage.

Thank you, surgery is Tuesday! - radmt

thanks to everyone who responded :) Here's hoping my absence will give others a little bit more money during the next few weeks.
Maybe I will not even return ! glorious idea. ha ha

You're right about the birth control pills. My - fibroid was walnut-sized when

I started taking birth control pills, and the doctor warned me the pills could make it larger. However, the last thing I wanted was pregnancy, so I took my chances in June of '84. The fibroid grew rapidly, and by Nov. of '84 I was nearly passing out from blood loss, so I had my hysterectomy the next month, in December. They gave me 6 weeks off work, and I took it! Only really needed maybe 3 weeks of it, but hey... who would turn down a paid 'vacation'!

I had a hysterectomy for fibroids when I - (sm)

was only 34, more than 30 years ago. My surgery was abdominal instead of vaginal, as the tumor had gotten huge. Being major surgery, it was no snap - but within a few days I was feeling a LOT better energy-wise, because I was no longer chronically anemic from the perpetual bleeding the fibroid caused.

The old wives' tales of getting fat after a hysterectomy were just that - silly tales. I actually lost a lot of weight just from the surgery and recovery, but afterward my energy level skyrocketed. Thirty years later, I'm the same weight.. it's never fluctuated.

It was so liberating to finally be free of periods forever! Worry-free exercise, travel, you name it. My only regret is that I couldn't have had the hysterectomy when I was 13 - when it all started!

My Second Job And Gallbladder RemovalSep 10, 2010
Finally after several interviews I had someone take a shot and hire me for a second job!  I was thrilled about this until I found out that the training for this job is the same day as my gallbladder removal.  Now if all goes well I should be home at 1 pm and my training starts at 5:30 pm.  The good thing is that my sister is going through the same training.  So I was thinking since the first few days of training is basically just sitting on my butt I can have my sister take m ...

Nausea After Gallbladder RemovalJun 28, 2011
I had my gallbladder removed a week ago because of gallstones.  Now I have nausea daily almost all day long.  My doc gave me antinausea medication to help with this, but it makes me very sleepy, which in turn makes working difficult.  Does anyone else have this problem or know someone who does?  I would really appreciate some advice from anyone who can help me rid myself of nausea and not be sleeping all the time from medications.  Does this wear off with time?  I h ...

Anyone Ever Tried That Hair Removal System No No?Jul 29, 2013
I believe it's called the No No???  It is a hair removal system that supposedly you can use for legs, underarms, and EVERYTHING.  Was wondering if anyone had used it and if it works and how long you are hair-free.  I did notice it had a buffing pad with it and I did try a removal system once where you basically and your legs down with what felt like sand paper to remove the hair, but it was VERY time consuming and I would just prefer a quick shave every couple of days as oppo ...

Hoarding. Anyone Dealing W/ This?Mar 12, 2012
I love my parents dearly, but they've recently put me into the middle of a situation that I tried to tackle politely before I was ambushed.  They aren't like most folks you see on "Hoarders" or those kind of shows, but they are SEVERE collectors...to the point that a room that used to house a pool table w/ free space around it and multiple pieces of furniture can no longer be negotiated.  They don't toss trash around or anything like that, but they are auction/yard sale- ...

Anyone Dealing With Milia?Feb 09, 2016
These are lovely little white bumps under the skin that look like whiteheads, but are actually composed mainly of keratin so they're very hard and incompressible.  They kind of look and feel like bird seed.  I started getting these all over my face and neck about year into menopause.  While it's not the worst thing in the world to happen to someone, I thought menopause would be the end of acne and the beginning of somewhat smoother (albeit a bit more wrinkled) skin. &nbs ...

AZ Students Protest Removal Of Mexican/American History ClassesApr 28, 2011
At the left is the video: TUCSON -- Rowdy students take over a big Tucson school board meeting in protest. It's a pretty wild scene -- and it's all over a Mexican-American studies class, a class that teaches history from a Mexican-American perspective. Here's what's going on. The governing board of the Tucson Unified School District was supposed to consider a plan that would make the class an elective, rather than a required class, like it is now. A state law passed in ...

Dealing With Difficult PeopleDec 28, 2011
What would you do? I do need serious advice please. I feel that I have been treated very badly by my mother-in-law for the past 11 years. From the very first time we met when she blurted out the comment, "It is so nice to know my son is looking at the inside and not the outside," right down to Christmas Day when she "implied" that I was stealing something from her in front of the whole family (she loaded all of the food items I brought except for a small tray of cookies, so I grabbed those an ...

Help In Dealing With Extended Family Apr 01, 2010
For years now my husband's sister and her husband have been trying to manipulate the family at every opportunity we are together.  It has become somewhat laughable at time because it's always expected.  At other times it is tremendously frustrating.  They find a way to throw a wedge into the plans even when the plans are bent to accommodate them.  They are never satisfied and cannot seem to go with the flow as the rest of us try to do.  Unfortunately& ...
