My second job and gallbladder removal

Posted: Sep 10, 2010

Finally after several interviews I had someone take a shot and hire me for a second job!  I was thrilled about this until I found out that the training for this job is the same day as my gallbladder removal.  Now if all goes well I should be home at 1 pm and my training starts at 5:30 pm.  The good thing is that my sister is going through the same training.  So I was thinking since the first few days of training is basically just sitting on my butt I can have my sister take me and kind of lean on her during the training.  I figured nothing says commitment to the job then having surgery just a few hours before and still showing up.  The thing is I really need this job.  Everyone in my family says I am not going to be able to do it, and I know they are right, but I have to.  I am barely making it as it is with my 3 kids that I just have to to do it!  So really I need advice about how much the pain is and if you think I could be able to sit for 3 hours about 7 hours after my surgery.  I know I seem crazy but I really need the money and I see no other way for me then to do this.  Thank you all so much!  Any advice will be more than greatly appreciated!

I know you need the job, but don't count on being able to do this right after surgery! Why didn't you tell the compnay you were having surgery? What happens if there is a problem and they can't do this laparoscopically and have to do it the long way? I have had the lchole and while it's not bad, you are not going to feel like working. One of the problems is when they put the CO2 in to inflate the area, the gas causes your shoulders to hurt pretty bad later. There is no job worth your health. If this place was any kind of decent place to work I bet if you told htem you were having a l-chole they would have delayed training 3-4 days. I would try to do something now to get out of it instead of waiting until I had surgery, finding out I wasn't going to be able to work and then having to tell them. That is not going to go over good with your employer.

not the day of or the day after most likely - completely agree

Last summer I was about to be evicted I was so broke when I was taken by ambulance and needed a l-chole. It was after my first dose of Dilaudid that I realized that I had a very high tolerance to pain and was so relieved to have been given something to help. I got a dose of Dilauad about 4 hours before my surgery, then just regular pain control meds after (Darvocet or some hydrocodone I think). Three hours later I was at the pain level from when I first presented and they let me have one final dose of Dilaudid. That gave me the relief I needed. I had to stay an extra day to have an ERCP, but went home that evening. I did not feel like doing any work AT ALL on my 2nd day postop. I needed my meds every 6 hours, and like I said, I have a high tolerance to pain. I was able to work some on the 3rd postop day.

I agree with rescheduling.

thanks guys for unfor... - :)

This is like a group training they are doing for 2 weeks. There are no others. So if I miss this then Im just screwed. This job is $10 an hour and its parttime so I can\'t lose my insurance and foodstamps. I need those so bad right now because of my kids and bills, with their deadbeat dad (my ex) that I\'m still getting bills from the break-up in March. I keep getting hit with everything! I know I did the right thing to leave him after he was being sucked into the drug world of meth and started to bring strange people over the house and everything. I had to get out of there!!! But now it\'s like Im being punished and everyday is some new hurdle I have to jump over. This is like another and I need this job so bad. There has to be something I can do. I will talk to them and see if there is something they can do for me. Maybe they can even send me home if I just show up and lift up my shirt and say \"This is what I have been through today and I\'m still here.\"

Can you postpone the surgery? Or, are you in a lot of pain now?

I am so sorry to hear this for you. Life is not always easy that is for sure. And you are right, you had to get away from that scene.

Two things... I had a lap chole no way could I work for a few days - lindawordlady

My surgery was scheduled about 11:00 in the morning but did not even get to the OR until 1 o'clock or later. I had severe pain afterwards not to mention that I slept a lot (always do after anesthesia) cuz it just takes a lot of you, at least for me it did. I went in on a Monday and was discharged on Wednesday, could not leave until I had a bowel movement was the reason for staying until Wednesday. Like the other poster said, I had a tremendous amount of pain with the gas in my shoulders and upper body for a few days. They said the best thing to do was to walk it off as much as possible. They advised me of no lifting for 6 weeks, not even was I supposed to lift my garage door for example.

I feel for what you are going through right now, believe me, I have been there, it was one thing after another for several months, and a lot of it with losing a job and financially too. I do know that in my state for example, one can get emergency assistance from the county, say for example for your rent if you were given an eviction notice. Could you possibly check that out and maybe even have your landlord work with you on that (just for a little bit of a breather) which it sounds like you need. If you really must go to that orientation, like you say, try and show up for the first day with your sister and leave early if you need to. Have her take notes and pass that on to you. Maybe you would just have to miss 2-3 days, even that is pushing it. My thoughts are with you and hoping things settle down for you.
maybe reschedule surgery? - mtmama

After my lchole, I threw up for 2 days. I did go to work (started a new job) on the third day, but I was weak and wouldn\'t even recommend that!! Maybe you could reschedule your surgery another 2 weeks out? I don\'t know how much your gallbladder is bothering you, but this is just a different idea. I also don\'t think you would be able to go the same day, you wouldn\'t be at your best that is for sure!! Good luck!

I don't think I would try going to the training. You will probably be hurting and on meds and not thinking clearly and wouldn't learn much even if you were able to get there. You doctor would know best, it would probably be better to ask him/her than to seek advice on a message board.

I recently had laparoscopic surgery (not cholecystectomy)... - Kendra

I was only in the hospital overnight and went home the next morning, but I scheduled the surgery on Thursday, took Thursday off and, since I have until Monday morning to get my Friday work in, I did it on Sunday. That was not so bad. The gas pain was horrible. I wish I would have had more warning about that. Mine was not in my shoulders, but about where I hurt when I did have a gallbladder attack. The difference was that no pain killer would help. The Demerol didn't even touch it. My gallbladder attack was over a year now, happened several times over the course of a week, and I have not had a problem since. Maybe the surgery can wait? Good luck!!!

I had emergency open umbilical hernia surgery on Thursday. Went back to work on Monday and worked half days for a week which was not smart as was so tired but did not have sick leave and only a minimal amount of PTO.

I would hold off on the surgery. You make no mention of pain or having any major issues, so postpone the surgery until after the training. You are taking a bunch of chances with a job you say you need by planning on going in to train/work on the same day as surgery. There are too many variables with surgery for you to do that. If the job is that important and the chole is not urgent then reschedule for a later date, do your training with a planned scheduled off time like the others mentioned like Thursday until Monday, should give you ample time to recover and not miss out on the training.

are you going to have the surgery? - many ops in my life

I have had surgery around 13 or 14 times in my lifetime (45) and one of them was a cholecystectomy. Of course, I had mine done before they had the laparoscopic option. If there is a problem in your surgery and they have to convert to an open procedure, I can tell you it is the most painful thing, I have ever experienced in my life. I gave birth to my second son with no epidural, no pain killers, nothing, 100% natural and that was a piece of cake compared to recovering from open chole. It took me a good eight weeks to recover to go back to work in an office. Since I have done at home transcription, I have had a upper abdominal laparoscopy for scar tissue and pain from my old chole site. I was really unable to type for a good four or five days and after that, small periods of time for several days until back up and running. Why are you having your gallbladder removed? Do you have stones? I would definitely not plan on working for at least 5 days after the surgery, much less training for a new job. You are going to want to take pain meds, lay down and sleep the first two days. Good luck and I would put the surgery off until you absolutely need it.
