Anyone dealing with milia?

Posted: Feb 9, 2016

These are lovely little white bumps under the skin that look like whiteheads, but are actually composed mainly of keratin so they're very hard and incompressible.  They kind of look and feel like bird seed.  I started getting these all over my face and neck about year into menopause.  While it's not the worst thing in the world to happen to someone, I thought menopause would be the end of acne and the beginning of somewhat smoother (albeit a bit more wrinkled) skin.  My new secret nickname for myself is Pebbles.

My dermatologist told me he can use electrodesiccation to flatten them out.  We did try that on a few, and the surface of the skin is smooth, but the white spots remain.  However, there are so many, I don't know if electrodesiccation is going to be feasible financially.  He charges $150 to remove 15 milia.  Milia are not actually within the pores, but form in the skin tissue, so no squeezing them out.

Anyone have success with a different treatment?

Thanks for any ideas.

I had horrible skin after my one and only child was born, and like you I went to a dermatologist. He got my skin looking great again. It was a long time ago but I do recall that he recommended some over-the-counter acne medicine and a grainy facial scrub. You can make your own facial scrub with a few teaspoons of sugar and enough lemon juice to bring it to the consistency of paste. First wash your face and rinse with warm water to open the pores, slather the paste on your areas, let it sit for a little bit then scrub your face (don't be too rough.) Then rinse your face well with cold water, do this every 2-3 days and see if this helps.

And be sure to wash your face everyday with good soap of your choice and rinse with cold water but do not use a creamy sort soap such as Dove that leaves you with a feeling of film on your race. In any case, you do not want any trace of soap on your face. Rinse your face about twice as long as you think you need to, and be sure to splash cold water on your face when you are finished to help close pores.

Do not use any kind of cold cream or night cream on your face unless your dermatologist recommends something to you.

You can buy comedome extractors on Amazon and there are lots of vidoes on Youtube about how to use them (some of them are quite disgusting so look for the ones that were made by medical professionals.)

Also, in my case, the milia was worst around my chin and mouth area, and I wondered if tooth paste or mouth wash might be exacerbating the problem. So I started taking special care to really clean this area after brushing my teeth just to make make sure that no trace liquid from rinsing my mouth remained.

Thanks - OP

Thanks for all the suggestions. I don't think I can use any type of scrub because I'm using Tazorac, and it makes the skin extremely sensitive. I was wondering if anyone had success with any other type of removal procedures. In any case, I'm glad you got good results from your routine!

Might help - Rusty

I have used a needle on these before, and my PCP has opened them up with a small scalpel for me before. My daughter gets folliculitis on her upper arms horrible, especially in the winter. She uses a loofah or scrubber with just plain Head and Shoulders dandruff shampoo on her arms. It works miracles. better than anything OTC for it. Use the plain, not any scent or 2 in 1. Good luck.

Hoarding. Anyone Dealing W/ This?Mar 12, 2012
I love my parents dearly, but they've recently put me into the middle of a situation that I tried to tackle politely before I was ambushed.  They aren't like most folks you see on "Hoarders" or those kind of shows, but they are SEVERE collectors...to the point that a room that used to house a pool table w/ free space around it and multiple pieces of furniture can no longer be negotiated.  They don't toss trash around or anything like that, but they are auction/yard sale- ...

Dealing With Difficult PeopleDec 28, 2011
What would you do? I do need serious advice please. I feel that I have been treated very badly by my mother-in-law for the past 11 years. From the very first time we met when she blurted out the comment, "It is so nice to know my son is looking at the inside and not the outside," right down to Christmas Day when she "implied" that I was stealing something from her in front of the whole family (she loaded all of the food items I brought except for a small tray of cookies, so I grabbed those an ...

Help In Dealing With Extended Family Apr 01, 2010
For years now my husband's sister and her husband have been trying to manipulate the family at every opportunity we are together.  It has become somewhat laughable at time because it's always expected.  At other times it is tremendously frustrating.  They find a way to throw a wedge into the plans even when the plans are bent to accommodate them.  They are never satisfied and cannot seem to go with the flow as the rest of us try to do.  Unfortunately& ...

I have had a bone spur for years but it hasn't bothered me until lately.  Went to the orthopedist and yes, there is a bone spur but he thinks the problem is more plantar fasciitis.  Now my heel and arch are killing me when I walk, and just in the past 2 days my ankle and the inside of my lower leg has been aching and very painful.  I can hardly walk, and I found I have to wear my shoes for support even when I am in the house just to be able to walk with less pain.  I nev ...

Anyone Else Dealing With An Ailing Elderly Parent Who Is Difficult?Jul 15, 2016
My mother has terminal cancer.  She wants to continue to live in her home and take care of her finances and medications, but she is on such high doses of pain medications now that she is confused at least half the time.  She gets verbally abusive when we try to convince her to do things differently than she wants...things for her own safety, etc.  The only way to escape it is to do things her way.  She is putting herself in danger of taking the wrong medication at the wrong t ...
