My SIL has multiple medical problems, including Kiari malformation and pseudotumor, and is constantly taking OxyContin and Percocet. If she's about to run out, she practically has panic attacks. She won't see a pain management doctor because the one time she did, that doctor tried to back her off her pain medicine and she freaked out. She's been on these meds for about three years now and her PCP just keeps prescribing them, even increasing the doses when she says she needs it.
She doesn't do anything all day long except lay on the couch or in bed and watch TV - she's neglected her hygiene and cleaning her apartment. I know she says she's got a headache pretty much 24/7, but my husband and I feel that she is addicted to her medicine. Unfortunately, she's not open to this suggestion and states that she "needs" her medicine, which for me would be the first clue.
Has anyone gone through this with a family member before? Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated, as we are at a loss as how to deal with this, or even if we should deal with it at all.
