Has anyone dealt with pain medication addiction in a family member?

Posted: Feb 8, 2011

My SIL has multiple medical problems, including Kiari malformation and pseudotumor, and is constantly taking OxyContin and Percocet.  If she's about to run out, she practically has panic attacks.  She won't see a pain management doctor because the one time she did, that doctor tried to back her off her pain medicine and she freaked out.  She's been on these meds for about three years now and her PCP just keeps prescribing them, even increasing the doses when she says she needs it.

She doesn't do anything all day long except lay on the couch or in bed and watch TV - she's neglected her hygiene and cleaning her apartment.  I know she says she's got a headache pretty much 24/7, but my husband and I feel that she is addicted to her medicine.  Unfortunately, she's not open to this suggestion and states that she "needs" her medicine, which for me would be the first clue.

Has anyone gone through this with a family member before?  Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated, as we are at a loss as how to deal with this, or even if we should deal with it at all.

Yes, I have in more than one family member. - My sister is one that actually

has a diagnosis to support the need for pain meds. She started with lymphoma which went to leukemia resulting a bone marrow transplant and then graft versus host. She then went on photophoresis along with chemo for the GVHD and has now been left with the bones of an 80-year-old. The prescribing doctor which is her hematologist let the family know that she would become dependent on these meds. So, we all knew it would happen. The problem is I don't think he was expecting her to start selling some of them or not taking them as prescribed.

Her mother (she is my half sister) finally called the doctor after multiple issues, and they stopped the meds. I am sure she is still in pain, but this last Thanksgiving and Christmas was the first time in a long time that I felt like it was my sister there.

As far as could we talk to her, absolutely not. She would not listen to a thing we said. She has OD on Ativan before, passed out in her yard on another occasion (no one realized until at the hospital it was a drunken state). My parents and her mother have tried having the talks with her and had gotten nowhere with her. The only thing that helped was her finally getting cut off from the doctor which they would have never done without the illegal part.

Med abuse - bad thing

Yes. At whatever cost, encourage them to stop. One relative lost everything, first her house, husband and then her children. She had one who was under 18 and one of her sisters had to take legal custody because the state actually removed her from her care. After 5 years in and out of rehab, bouncing around from one place to the other, using her family until they woke up, she is currently residing in a shelter. Another relative was very close to losing her life. Won't go into any details because your posts pretty much cover it. The doctors who prescribe these meds freely should have their licenses revoked. Don't get me wrong, there are people, cancer patients, who need the narcotics but in these two instances that was not the case.

keep recommending pain specialist, it\'s the only thing that\'s going to help her. Also, close friend in chronic pain said book FULL CATASTROPHE LIVING (Jon Kabat-Zinn) literally saved her life. Best of luck to you, very painful to be the on-looker too.

Thank you for all the responses. - Zville MT

My fiance has an addiction to roxys. They are $25 a pill. He is a sleep tech for a hospital and never used before or during work. I thought he stopped. Just recently when we got our taxes back he began acting very strange and irritated easily like he did before he stopped. He was on them again. Spent over $2000 a month on them. Here is the kicker... his dad is his dealer. He hit rock bottom. He had no money, his brand new car messed up, and he was about to lose me over his lies. He is now ONLY 5 days sober, but I will take it. He is going to beat this thing. I had a long talk to his dad and it turns out his dad didn't know he was that bad with money and had agreed that if he came begging he will not get any from him. We have a baby on the way and if he doesn't get clean and stay clean I am out the door baby or not!!!

The response, coordinated by President Dwight Eisenhower, resulted in nearly 3 million illegal immigrants being sent home. Nine In Ten Of My Liberal Friends Are On Some Sort Of Psychiatric Medication.Feb 21, 2017
I don't think this is a coincidence.  They aren't shy about talking about it, either.  I mean, I'm all for medication to treat an illness, including mental illness, but I wouldn't broacast it.  What happened to pride?  It's like having a mental illness or a disorder is a badge of honor.  I am all for being oneself and having confidence, however, that used to mean having ethics, integrity, working hard and helping others.  Now it means being ...

AddictionMay 04, 2011
So, I hear that the first step to rehabilitation is admitting you have a problem.  I have been abusing Xanax and Klonopin for a couple of years now.  First it was by prescription, got a year supply from a doc then a few refills.  When I fould out how easy it was to get this stuff on the "streets" and online I went balls out and started taking 2 to 3 a day, then more.  first I got "busted" by DH, who only said that he knew I wasn't getting them from the doc anymore and l ...

A very dear friend of mine has become addicted to meth and crack.  This has been over about the past year, year and a half.  I have watched this tragedy unfold and watched as his family has been torn apart.  When I see him and talk to him it's like the "lights are on but nobody is home".  He says that everyone has turned their back on him when he needs help the most and we are all to blame for his situation.  (addict talk i know.)  He has been kicked out of his ...

Did You Know That The President Was A Member Of THE NEW PARTY?Aug 28, 2012
Who is the New Party? The New Party believes that the social, economic, and political progress of the United States requires a democratic revolution in America -- the return of power to the people. Our basic purpose -- reflected both in our own governance and in our aspirations for the nation -- is to make that revolution happen.  I hate to say this but, reading further about this party, it follows the same principles as the Communist party.  Here is the membership of the NEW PA ...
