"Dec. 29 (UPI) -- A U.S. congressman urged President Obama not to send Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, prisoners to Yemen amid reports of Yemeni militants plotting against the West.
Rep. Frank Wolf, R-Va., wrote to Obama Tuesday, asking that no more Guantanamo Bay detainees be sent to Yemen or any other unstable country, FoxNews.com reported. Wolf has sent four such letters since Oct. 1.
"I'm troubled by every (detainee) that I've read about," Wolf told FoxNews.com. "I personally would have sent none of them back to Yemen. ... Don't send them back to Yemen, particularly based on what happened on Christmas. It's dangerous to the country."
Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab has been charged in the failed attempt to blow up Detroit-bound Northwest Flight 253 Christmas Day. Abdulmutallab reportedly spent time in Yemen with al-Qaida militants and was in the Middle Eastern country days before the attempt.
Yemeni Foreign Minister Abu Bakr al-Qirbi told The Times of London the country's authorities were aware of al-Qaida operatives there, FoxNews.com reported.
"They may actually plan attacks like the one we have just had in Detroit," al-Qirbi said. "There are maybe hundreds of them ... ."
U.S. Justice Department spokesman Dean Boyd said 14 Guantanamo Bay detainees were sent to Yemen when George W. Bush was president, and seven other detainees have been sent to the country since Obama was inaugurated."
