addiction

So, I hear that the first step to rehabilitation is admitting you have a problem.  I have been abusing Xanax and Klonopin for a couple of years now.  First it was by prescription, got a year supply from a doc then a few refills.  When I fould out how easy it was to get this stuff on the "streets" and online I went balls out and started taking 2 to 3 a day, then more.

first I got "busted" by DH, who only said that he knew I wasn't getting them from the doc anymore and left it up to me to make a choice.  Then a couple of weeks ago I took 4 xanax with a couple of glasses of wine and apparently my friends couldn't get me off the sofa, said I was talking, but "out of it".   It was very embarassing.  I have since taken my last 30 pills and have checked online and have been tapering off.

It isn't easy and I get a lot of headaches and dizziness and can't sleep.  It would be so much easier to take a couple of pills, but I don't want to let him down.  I don't want to go to the doctor for this either.  I really want to do it on my own.

I need to know if anyone has done it on their own?  What helped the most?

I would talk to a doctor. Detoxing yourself can be dangerous. I have been on Xanax for a long time, I am down to 1 mg a day. Also, the 12-step programs can really help if you are ready to do this. I think you can have seizures if you just go cold turkey with Xanax. Thing is, in my experience, so few doctors really know anything about addiction. I would seek out an MD in your area who knows something about addiction. I am glad I am just down to 1 a day, and hopefully, I can wean from that. Good luck to you and don't be afraid or ashamed to seek help.

Also, you can't do it for your husband, you have to want to do it for yourself.

What I meant is that I want to do this, for me, and for US. I'm not going cold turkey, no way! I followed a tapering dose I found online, just didn't expect all the wiggly walls and dizziness and craving, especially at night when I want to sleep.

I'll take all your suggestions. I think I've got to just give the doc a call and swallow my pride. I had this "I've got it under control" attitude or that "it won't happen to me"...

I guess doing it alone could be dangerous since I was taking up to 4 to 6 pills of either or both a day...

Thanks for the wisdom here. I knew I'd find solid help.

I believe getting off of benzos can be very - dangerous, i.e. possible SM

seizures, etc. This may not be true with tapering the dosage, though, just completely stopping. Can you go to a doc and just tell him you had been prescribed this and now want to taper off, leaving out the part about getting the meds without a prescription? I understand you feel ashamed about this, plus this will follow you in your medical records forever.

The above poster is spot on. Don't volunteer anything but that you need to taper off and need advice. Once you admit too much, you are forever labeled. Good luck to you.

DRUG ADDICTIONSep 16, 2010
A very dear friend of mine has become addicted to meth and crack.  This has been over about the past year, year and a half.  I have watched this tragedy unfold and watched as his family has been torn apart.  When I see him and talk to him it's like the "lights are on but nobody is home".  He says that everyone has turned their back on him when he needs help the most and we are all to blame for his situation.  (addict talk i know.)  He has been kicked out of his ...

I need advice.  When you read through this you may think I am completely nuts for staying in my relationship.  I want you to know that it is hard when you love someone and want to help them.  The truth is I am almost out the door even though I have no money and no where to go. My husband is addicted to Roxicet/oxycodone 30 mg.  He snorts them now in our bathroom about 2 at a time.  I knew he dabbeled here and there but never this much.  His dad and stepmother are d ...

Coping With Addiction/mental IllnessApr 27, 2015
My son and DIL recently went through a divorce. She has bipolar compounded by alcoholism and addictions to prescription and recreational drugs. He coped as best he could, but throughout their 6 year marriage she attempted suicide 5 times, is a cutter, and twice became wreckless with a gun to the point that authorities including a SWAT team became involved. My son is active duty AF, living on base. At one point she was banned from the base before the divorce and had to get an apartment of her own ...

Has Anyone Dealt With Pain Medication Addiction In A Family Member?Feb 08, 2011
My SIL has multiple medical problems, including Kiari malformation and pseudotumor, and is constantly taking OxyContin and Percocet.  If she's about to run out, she practically has panic attacks.  She won't see a pain management doctor because the one time she did, that doctor tried to back her off her pain medicine and she freaked out.  She's been on these meds for about three years now and her PCP just keeps prescribing them, even increasing the doses when she say ...
