personal question

Posted: Jul 24, 2013

ONe of the questions on the MMPI is whether you have a fantasy life that no one knows about.  Which I do.  So I got to wondering, does everyone? Maybe it's normal?  We are not talking about sexual fantasies, but more like the old imaginary friends kind of fantasy life.  I have never EVER told ANYONE about my fantasy life, which has been going on for probably 40 years.  I have very well developed characters with names and histories.  When I'm alone I replay some of my "favorite episodes;" it's like a soap opera all my own.  One thing:  I'm not in it.  Never have been.  Thought about including myself once but changed my mind.  I just watch my characters on the screen.

So does anyone else do this or something similar?

;

not really, but.... s/m - MTMT

Sometimes I play out a "what if" game in my head... what if this had happened in a different way, or how could I have had a different conversation about something.

I think a lot of people probably do what you are doing, and they end up being authors of best sellers! Perhaps you should give that a try. I've had a few people tell me I should be a writer, but I just can't think of any good stories to tell. But it sounds like you've had one running for a long time. You could end up writing an entire series of books that feature your characters.

Also, I wouldn't worry about thinking you're "weird," particularly because you keep yourself out of the fantasy. I think you realize this is not the "real" world, so you keep yourself separate, as an observer rather than a participant.

I really think you should go for it! Write a book and see how it goes. It sure would beat typing other people's words all day, and you might even have financial success and could retire from the MT biz. Now that's MY fantasy!

So, next step is to fantasize yourself becoming a best-selling author and watching those royalty checks roll in!

That's what I was going to say! - callemanon

[ In Reply To ..]
Authors do that! OP, you should look up some author interviews -- can't tell you how many I've read where they've said something to the effect of: I've had these people in my head, had to get them on paper...

I don't think it's a problem unless you start living in your fantasy world and forget about reality.

I know it is cliche but I fantasize about winning the - lottery.

all the time. every day of my life. I don't go overboard playing but I grew up in poverty and have mdade a decent life for my children but still struggle, just want to know what it would be like to sit and not worry for a while. I have to stop this makes me cry!!!

Carl Sagan once said: "Imagination will often carry us to worlds that never were, but without it we go nowhere.”

Ha, Ha! Good one! - xx

[ In Reply To ..]
Though it is unlikely that Mr. Sagan had in mind the kind of pathetic, low-rent, wishful thinking kind of "imagination" being discussed here. He was talking about expansive thinking and concrete ideas that might actually do some good. Not fairy tales.

Some of us have real accomplishments and exciting worthwhile experiences with real people who also have real accomplishments to share. We don't need to pretend our lives aren't crap because our lives, in fact, are not crap.
Wow - callmeanon
[ In Reply To ..]
What a joyless, soul-less existence you must lead. You must hate books of fiction and poetry. You probably never stop to see the beauty in the world and wonder, choosing instead to only focus on what accolades a person hangs on their wall.

I bet you have no concept of the fact that all the great, tangible accomplishments in this world were first born of imagination, whimsy, and yes, fantasy.

Your life must be like the 8th circle of hell. I pity you.

Yes! Awesome post. And WE thank you! - sm :-)

I think real life is enhanced and more colorful when - we have dreams and fantasies. sm

It means our minds are still working, still open and adaptable. The difference between seeing in color & black and white. The mean posts above are the thinking of a closed mind, which is sad.

If you were happy with your life, you wouldn't feel the need to crap all over someone for having an imagination.

Used to - Me

[ In Reply To ..]
I used to do that for more than 40 years too. I had some kind of breakthrough a couple of years ago and realized that I hated my life and was using my fantasies to escape. I look at it as like being an addict, when I have times of stress, I am tempted to go back, but I don't. I just take it day to day and find things to do I enjoy, but I agree with others on this thread, I think we have active imaginations and I would love to be a writer, still working on that though.

This is great - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
This is exactly how people write fiction, fables and such. I always do this before I go to bed or I would not sleep. I read a little but always go to the books in my head.

Sort of , but mine is not that secret - :)

[ In Reply To ..]
I don't have stories or characters in my head - I wish I did as I love, love, love to read, but it's not in my destiny to actually be a writer.

What I do love to do, however, is look at real estate sites - specifically a nifty real estate site that I found for properties in the United Kingdom. When I'm bored and taking a break from work I play "let's pretend I won the lottery" and the price of the houses I look at varies based on what the lotto payout is running currently.

I'm not that secret about doing this though, so I'm not sure if that's the type of fantasy that you have in mind, but it's a fun way to dream for me.

As someone above said, fantasy and dreaming is very healthy. Just think - we wouldn't have Star Trek without Gene Roddenberry's dreaming or Star Wars without George Lucas' "what if" ideas. I feel for anyone who hasn't experienced the joy of a good fantasy or dream or "what if" moment.

I love this! - MTMT

[ In Reply To ..]
I do that, too! I think about all the things I would do if I won the lottery. Problem is, I never buy lottery tickets, so it's not likely to happen.

That reminds me of a joke. A woman prays to God to help her win the lottery. Week after week, she prays for this. Finally one day, a booming voice comes down from the sky and says, "Work with me here. Buy a ticket!"

Oh, and think about all the things that have come about in real life thanks to those dreamers you mentioned, like flip phones and teleportation (ok, they're still working on that one, but someday!).

name-calling isn't a life - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
each and every time you take it upon yourself to judge others as psychotic or pathetic you are stepping into a fantasy life. Don't you realize that? LOL. You are not even attached to reality. You have a little fantasy life going on inside your head that enables you to assassinate the characters of other people while you pat yourself on your self-righteous, self-aggrandizing back.

OMG - someone else does this??? - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Too funny - though I usually stick to where I imagine we'll retire (ha-ha, as if). Though I did spend a lovely half hour recently looking at real estate in Costa Rica and then in the South Pacific, just for giggles.

I love looking at other homes. Just in case that lottery ever comes through, LOL.

I imagine winning the lottery when I wallk around in - (sm) - MTBankAccount

[ In Reply To ..]
neighborhood. I look at each house, and imagine, if I could ever afford to buy a house (hah!) which one I would buy, and why, and what I might want to do to change certain things about the yard.

I live in a beautiful area, but it's pretty rare that I get out-of-town visitors. Still, as I'm sitting in traffic, I often think about what parts of the city a first-timer would want to see... what would I show them? And I also like to include all those little-known secret "gem" areas in the city that tourists never hear about that I would show them.

I'm creative, but usually don't have much time to scratch that itch. I often think about what sorts of projects I'd work on if money were no longer an issue, and I didn't have to waste so many hours of my life chasing after it.

I do that too! - real estate junkie

[ In Reply To ..]
I go all over though... villas in Italy, farms in Ireland, canal homes in Amsterdam. You name it, I've perused it.

Right now, my obsession is homes with acreage in Oklahoma, lol. We may actually be moving there, though, so I guess it's justified.

right now I'm into floating homes in Oregon. There used to be a lady who posted on this board that lived on a floating home/houseboat in Oregon I believe, which was got me interested in that to begin with, wonder if she is still around, think I will post and ask later.

Also got cabins marked in Maine, Colorado, Idaho. What a dreamer I am, but is fun for me to imagine.

My fantasy life is mainly through books--sm - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
When I read, I become a part of that alternate reality on some level. The funny thing is that when I read, I do not visualize but I am experiencing it, feeling it. That is my escapist route. My mother on the other hand doesd have a fantasy life and I think it is essential to her well-being, just as much as reading is to mine.

yes and I love it! - misplaced in time

[ In Reply To ..]
I'm not sure if mine are quite the same. I have different lives. No I do not tell anyone I know about this because as you can see by some posters, I just don't need the negativity. But here is my scenarios:

When I'm in the mood to relax and get de-stressed from everyday mundane things I go to my English garden cottage. It's got a 2 fireplaces, 2 huge fluffy feather bed overstuffed pillows, in the living area is a library of books if I feel like reading. The dining area has a door that leads out into my garden. Have a hammock if it's sunny out I'll relax in the sun, then go through my garden to choose what I will have for dinner. I live alone there, but have many wildlife that come and visit me and I feed them.

Scenario 2: If I'm in the mood to have fun with the girls I go back to my school years and live through my childhood again. hay rides, skating parties, campouts. I'm back having conversations with my best friends from school. Girl talk and everything fun I used to do with my friends.

Scenario 3: If I'm in the mood for a little companionship either Antonio Banderas or Orlando Bloom will take me to see the ballet and then a romantic dinner afterwards. We go back to my cottage, but just sit and talk. Haven't had any sexual fantasies

These are all stories that I cultivate in my mind to think about possible story ideas that maybe one day if I ever get free time I will write a stories.

It's perfectly normal to fantasize. I then come back to my every day life, but it is very relaxing to destress in my fantasy life.

That is not a fantasy life - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
That is what authors do when writing a book. It is a creative outlet, especially if you are not in it.

A Quirky (if Somewhat Personal) QuestionFeb 24, 2016
Do any of the women on here wear boxer shorts? I mean, MEN'S boxer shorts. The reason I ask is that I was complaining about the high cost of women's PJs and one of my friends told me she buys men's boxers at Walmart and sleeps in them with a large t-shirt for the top. I bought a 3-pack of boxers and found them amazingly comfortable! I was surprised to learn that two other women in our little group also wear boxers! Who knew? Somehow I just thought this was kind of funny. ...
