Yet another thread about reading :-)

Posted: Mar 18, 2012

Obviously a lot of us love to read!

My question for everyone is do you keep a list of the books you have read?

I started doing this about 2 years ago because one of my kids came home from school saying that in class that day the teacher was talking about reading and said that she had heard a statistic that the average person reads 300 books in their lifetime.  Knowing me, my son heartily disagreed with that statement and said I probably read 300 books each year.

That got me wondering because I'd never counted before, so I started a list.  Turns out I've read an average of 150 books/year, so less than he figured but certainly more than the teacher's statistic would say.

It has also been fun for me because I can keep track of authors/books I like or dislke.  I wish I had started my list in high school - a L O N G time ago :-) - so I could see that number!

;

I'm 53 and I have not even read anywhere close to 300 books - Here's why

A lot of us don't have time to read. We don't have that luxury. I work full time. That means all day long and sometimes into the evening. My weekends are spent working, cleaning, working on our business, tending to our animals, grocery shopping, laundry, cooking, helping kids with homework, bathing and putting them to bed (okay, I've read a couple children's stories :-)). I hit the pillow at 1 a.m. and seconds later I'm out. I get up at 6 a.m. to start all over. I think maybe 2 days a month I have an afternoon to myself. On those days I set and watch a good movie with some popcorn. If I start a book I fall asleep. I did pick up a book about 8 or so months ago. I'm now on page 3.

When I was in the Army and stationed overseas, young and unmarried without children I read more. My mom would send me books. I've read all of Danielle Steel, but the characters in her books starting getting snobby, so lost interest. My favorite books overall that I could read over and over again are Paint the Wind by Cathy Cash Spellman and The Black Swan and Moss Rose by Day Taylor (who is now deceased). I also read 2 books by Bette J. Eadie called Embraced by the Light and The Ripple Effect (which really had me thinking and changed my viewpoints on a lot of spiritual/religious ideas). I read both of those when I was on jury duty years ago within 2 days. Now reading for me will probably be once I retire. Just don't have the time.

I read a ton. I am glad to have my Kindle, too. - Once I had the kids (5 and 3)

I found that I read less and less. Now, with my Kindle, I keep it in my purse and I read everywhere. I read while we wait for the bus. I read during T-ball practice. I read if I am a few minutes early to my MMA class at the gym. I am so happy to be able to read again so easily. As for not having time, I have said that before and it just isn't true. I work, stay home with the 3-year-old, chauffer kids everywhere they need to go, work out 5 days a week, volunteer at my son's elementary school and my husband is deployed. Also, it takes me 45 minutes to drive anywhere because my house is in the middle of nowhere. There is time to read, if you want to.

Heck, I want to hear more about your MMA class! - do tell!

[ In Reply To ..]
I love mixed martial arts. I'd love to hear about your class. I have been thinking of taking a jiu jitsu class, or kickboxing. I'm afraid the cardio would kill me!

I take a Muay Thai kickboxing class, which is a LOT of cardio, - but it's a lot of fun and I am in great

[ In Reply To ..]
shape. When my oldest is not in school, I also take Jui-Jitsu and Sambo, but when school is in, my 5-year-old has to get up at 5 and we live 45 minutes from the gym and those classes run until 8 p.m., so I can't do that to him. The cardio in kickboxing is rough, but I have lost 140# since I started. If you want to do it, you should. Even if you can't hang at first, you'll get there. We have young Air Force men who come in and throw up during the workout that I can do now. :) Not too bad for someone nearly twice their age.
you are the bomb! - sm

Wow. That's fantastic. Muay Thai, Jiu-jitsu AND sambo! Some of my favorites include Gina Carano, the Emelianenko brothers, and, of course, the Gracies.

I don't know if I'm more worried about throwing out my back or inducing an acute coronary syndrome! Plus, I'm over 50. They'd probably have to resuscitate me!

Thanks for the info, and enjoy your training. You should be so proud of yourself!
Thank you! Tons of fun. I really do enjoy it. - I might not have needed to lose

so much weight, had I started this earlier in life. You SO could do it. I think you should!
thanks for the vote of confidence! - (my favorite is Georges St. Pierre)

I'm feeling pretty competent, fight-wise. If I can't take him, I can certainly make him think twice. I hit harder than most men, at this point.

I joined a site called GoodReads.com - it's wonderful! You can keep a list of books you've read and a list of books you want to read. No more random bits of paper with jotted-down book titles scattered around the house. You can rate &/or review books. You can have friends & family join & recommend books to each other. You can set a goal of how many books you want to read per year. You can fix your settings to have the site recommend books to you, receive authors' blogs, etc. Lots to do, it's a lot of fun!

I also belong to an on-line book cliub, DearReader.com - she will send you a daily email sample of a book in the genre(s) you choose. It's a quick read, and a great way to hear about books and sample them to see if you want to read the whole thing.

thanks for sharing... - Bindi

I love these ideas about keeping a list and checking out Goodreads - as noted above...thanks

Please, if anyone has ideas for no-to-low-stress types of jobs, post them here.  I am to the point I can barely function.  The MT industry has been stressful for me since I started nearly a decade ago (for all the reasons you are familiar with) and with a company acquisition and new software, new client (to the company with the lack of proper specs, mixed feedback), expander issues, extensive time spent while not working trying to make sense of it all and gain some sort of control, and ...

NAFTA (from Fox News Thread)Sep 27, 2011
The thread about Fox News talking about jobs overseas has turned political.  One person somewhat erroneously credited Clinton with being responsible for NAFTA.  While he signed it into law, NAFTA has its origins in Ronald Reagan's Trade and Tariff Act, which allows the President to negotiate trade, with Congress unable to do anything.  The TTA allowed Bush (Sr) negotiate with Mexico and Canada to alleviate tariff burdens.  NAFTA was underway well before Clinton sign ...

The 11:11 Phenomenon, I Don't Get It. I'm Starting A New ThreadMay 21, 2010
because the one below sort got hijacked or should I say "invaded" by aliens from outer space.  LOL! Anyway, I had never heard of this phenomenon, so when OP posted about I googled it of course and I just don't get it, I guess.  What does it all mean really, that a lot of people all look at the clock at the exact same time a day or that once you become aware of 11, you see it everywhere?  If it is a true phenomenon, then what is the point?  Why have everyone become aware ...

What, you didn't hear? In a speech yesterday when he kind of implied that if Hillary gets to choose her judges those "second amendment people" should do something about it? Oh, I know, he didn't mean that, it was just a joke, etc., ad nauseam. He is just the worst candidate to ever run for president. He has absolutely NO statesmanship, no demonstration of any thought whatsoever when he runs his dumb mouth off. From "The Resurgent" (not a rag I usually read because it is actually a s ...

Bringing Up Thread About Internet From Down BelowMar 24, 2014
Pretty busy thread down there and I didn't want this info to go to waste. Count former President Bill Clinton among those who are skeptical of the new Obama administration plan to give up Internet oversight authority. At a weekend meeting sponsored by the Clinton Global Initiative, the former president talked in detail about why the U.S. should retain oversight over Internet domain names and addresses. “A lot of people … have been trying to take this ...

Starting New Thread On Health Care DebateJan 05, 2012
Previous thread getting too indented and confusing.  The thread began with the question "If you are against Obama health care law, who should pay for the uninsured?"  It boils down to either the individual is required to pay or the taxpayer will pay.  We have lots of personal anecdotes and generalized "should" statements, grievances against the government and vague "individual basis" which means, I guess, do nothing.  I came away with the opinion that conservatives are saying ...

The Tolerance Thread/response/re Byrd/one PersonMar 19, 2013
It seems to have disappeared.  I'm not going to inquire about why it's gone, but I did want to repost my reply regarding associating modern-day Democrats with Byrd and the fact that there was only one person caught making a statement on tape.  --Byrd  was over 40 years ago. Surely we can't use Robert Byrd and other racist Southern Democrats circa pre-1960s as examples of who modern day Democrats identify with, no more than we could use Lincoln as a modern day R ...

The Gay Obama Thread Is Gone But The Limbaugh Prezdant PowahMay 27, 2013
With all due respect, Moderator, I don't see the consistency here. especially since the Gay Obama thread actually evolved into a political discussion and was pretty civil. As always, I appeciate this forum and respect your discretion, but I think our skin was pretty thick and resiliant on the Gay Obama thread.  I know you can't be here 24/7, but it's a shame a post that remained as long as the Gay Obama post did, with the offending post probably being the subject thread, th ...

I've Been Reading Up On The Flat TaxApr 14, 2011
Flat tax won't work. If they would institute a flat tax, they would close loopholes we all take at tax time. This is why Malcolm Forbes running for President was all for the flat tax. " Following the 1986 tax reform, the average income tax paid by somebody in the $50,000-$75,000 bracket indeed went down, and I mean way down--$1,100. The total tax take for that bracket went up $7.6 billion because there were many more taxpayers in that range in 1987. Fact is, taxes for virtually all tax bra ...

about how the Romney campaign kept secret who was going to be VP. A lot of the content is information from Beth Myers, head of the vetting process for Romney.
