The thread about Fox News talking about jobs overseas has turned political. One person somewhat erroneously credited Clinton with being responsible for NAFTA. While he signed it into law, NAFTA has its origins in Ronald Reagan's Trade and Tariff Act, which allows the President to negotiate trade, with Congress unable to do anything. The TTA allowed Bush (Sr) negotiate with Mexico and Canada to alleviate tariff burdens. NAFTA was underway well before Clinton signed it into law.

Not sure about that. I think it is Clinton's fault for NAFTA and us not having good jobs in transcription anymore. If he didn't sign the NAFTA agreement, more people would have their jobs in the United States. Boo to all that!

First of all, most of the MT jobs have been lost to India and EMR, not Mexico and Canada. Secondly, Bush did most of the leg work on NAFTA.

Following diplomatic negotiations dating back to 1986 among the three nations, the leaders met in San Antonio, Texas, on December 17, 1992, to sign NAFTA. U.S. President George H. W. Bush, ceremonially signed NAFTA. The agreement then needed to be ratified by each nation's legislative or parliamentary branch.

Before the negotiations were finalized, Bill Clinton came into office. In the U.S., Bush, who had worked to "fast track" the signing prior to the end of his term, ran out of time and had to pass the required ratification and signing into law to incoming president Bill Clinton. Prior to sending it to the United States Senate, Clinton introduced clauses to protect American workers and allay the concerns of many House members. It also required U.S. partners to adhere to environmental practices and regulations similar to its own. The ability to enforce these clauses, especially with Mexico, and with much consideration and emotional discussion, the House of Representatives approved NAFTA on November 17, 1993, by a vote of 234 to 200. The agreement's supporters included 132 Republicans and 102 Democrats. NAFTA passed the Senate 61-38. Senate supporters were 34 Republicans and 27 Democrats. Clinton signed it into law on December 8, 1993; it went into effect on January 1, 1994.

He even credits himself for it. It may have been an idea before him, but he's the one who signed it into law, took credit for it, and in return American jobs started going overseas and it continued on after that.

Sorry to say, that mistake was his.

Jobs were actually created in the US in the decade following passage. The unemployment rate dropped 2-3 percentage points. It is US TAX CODE that is the problem. Tech jobs went to India thanks to the tech bubble. Companies could not sustain paying many, many techs and help desk people $120/hr. so they went elsewhere.
