June 10, 2010 Dear Friend, I am a fourth-generation shrimper from the Gulf of Mexico and today I was arrested and charged with unlawful conduct for pouring oil on myself at a Senate Energy Committee. I was protesting Senator Lisa Murkowski's refusal to make BP pay for the disaster that is devastating shrimping communities across the Gulf Coast. Just imagine this: BP can get away with pouring millions of gallons of oil in our seas and I get arrested for dumping a half-gallon of oil on myself in protest! This is just outrageous. Please join me and call Senator Murkowski and ask her to: Please contact Senator Murkowski's office and tell her to stop protecting BP and instead protect the fishermen, the coastal residents and the wildlife! "Hi, my name is _______ and I am from _______. Senator Lisa Murkowski wants to keep oil companies' liability cap at a pitiful $75 million. This is outrageous. How dare she side with BP over the American people who have been so devastated by this manmade disaster? I also think the charges against the Texas shrimper Diane Wilson should be dropped. And by the way, we want clean air! Tell your friends to call, too. Oh, and one more thing! Please join me and thousands across the United States for the Boycott BP International Day of Action on June 19. You can find and create actions in your area here. Diane Wilson |

As we protest the tragic oil spill, we can celebrate the end of one environmental disaster and war machine: The Hummer is dead. We will build a memorial in motor city, Detroit, during the US Social Forum in June. Join us in Detroit for the USSF or donate to create the Hummer art installation. Picture bicycles, butterflies, and a surrounding community garden! |
One poster asks: "Please provide a link to the actual bill in question. I must read these things before acting on them."
Answer: There’s not an actual bill at the moment. Check here for what aides in her office are saying will — or may — happen this week.
So, how can anyone vote on something that's not an actual bill? Doesn't make sense.
In part of her statement, she says:
"As the EPA moves closer and closer to issuing these regulations, I continue to believe that this command-and-control approach is our worst option for reducing the emissions blamed for climate change. I also believe that with so much at stake, Congress must be given time to develop an appropriate and more responsible solution. And so today, after consultation with the Parliamentarian, I have come to the floor to introduce a resolution of disapproval under the Congressional Review Act that would prevent the EPA from acting on its own. Senator Lincoln of Arkansas, Senator Nelson of Nebraska, and Senator Landrieu of Louisiana have joined me as cosponsors of this bipartisan resolution, as have 35 of my Republican colleagues.
"I've also come to the floor to re-affirm and re-emphasize my previous remarks on this issue. Given what has been alleged about my intentions, I believe this debate needs to be directed back to its substance, and away from the ad hominem attacks and red herrings that have been thrown out in recent weeks. There is a legitimate and substantive debate to be had over whether the EPA should be allowed to issue command-and-control climate regulations, and I welcome that debate. If there are any Senators who support the unprecedented, regulatory intrusion that the EPA is pursuing, then I hope those members will come to the floor and explain why. I strongly oppose that approach, however, and I hope my colleagues will listen to my explanation as to why I feel as strongly about this issue as I do."
There must be something in that act the EPA is trying to get passed that is not very good. There are now 40 senators that are co-sponsoring her. Makes me think something is not right with it.
