starting new thread on health care debate

Posted: Jan 5, 2012

Previous thread getting too indented and confusing.  The thread began with the question "If you are against Obama health care law, who should pay for the uninsured?"  It boils down to either the individual is required to pay or the taxpayer will pay.  We have lots of personal anecdotes and generalized "should" statements, grievances against the government and vague "individual basis" which means, I guess, do nothing.  I came away with the opinion that conservatives are saying the system is broken, the taxpayers ARE paying for the irresponsible and poor, but they do want anything to be done about it. Sweeping statements and gripes do not address the bottom line - someone will pay, and right now it is the taxpayer.

We need programs like Medicaid and Medicare. - butitneedspolicing

Our society should take care of those truly disabled and unable to fend for themselves, the elderly, etc.

The problem is, we have a lot of people that have been allowed these programs that can work and pay their own way.

Of course, you have to have the jobs available for the people to work.

The GOP wants to take us back to the 1800s, which is a long-past era that is not going to happen. Families can't/don't take care of their own now and they would balk at the possibility of doing so. The GOP is living in an idealistic dream land.

On some level, I could support some of that ideal if the GOP was more willing for a gradual approach to change rather than hurting millions with radical change. We didn't build the system overnight, and changing it overnight pulls the rug out from everybody's feet.

Also, the entire government, pubs and dems, seem to be in the pocket of the superrich, and we just can't trust any of them to do anything worthwhile for the middle class. They lie to us to get us to vote against ourselves, or they throw God's name into it for deceptive reasons. We can't believe what we are told since they will say anything to assure reelection, both sides of the aisle.

healthcare bill the pockets of the insurance executives will continue to fill. What we really need is for some philanthropist to start a NON-PROFIT health insurance company thereby dramatically reducing premiums with any profit going back to the insureds. If the other insurance companies didn't reduce their rates too they would be out of business quickly. Sounds kind of like Obama's public OPTION huh?

Who do you think is going to pay for Obamacare...It IS the taxpayers again. Health is a personal responsibility and choice. I do understand your confusion, but the black and white answer you want does not exist. Obamacare is NOT health care. See posts below regarding Judge Kithil and links throughout law that have absolutely nothing to do with health at all. Also I suggest you read the bill and review all the additional taxes that will be imposed on taxpayers.

It is an individual responsbility. I posted yesterday in our area for those without insurance, there are several medical, health choices available. Unfortunately, some refuse to even complete the form to get the services FOR FREE. Those people are not going away because of Obamacare, and will not be more responsible either. If someone is so odd as to not fill out a form (and yes, if they need assistance completing the form, it is available), why should the rest of society be saddled with their irresponsibility. People can also researach free clinics and go there. There is not just 1 simple little answer, which you seem to be looking for. We all have choices, some of just make better choices than others. Those that refuse to do so, the burden should be on them and them alone.

So in essence the taxpayer pays either way according to some posters. All the fuss basically boils down to President Obama having him name on it you suppose??
Or is it not okay to require individual people to purchase insurance but it is fine to require taxpayers to be paying for them because that is the why it always been.

You are SPOT ON, lady!

There are NUMEROUS options available to folks: Here we have a County Health Department and free clinics in addition to a statewide healthcare system for the indigent.

Of course, ALL of the above programs are funded by TAX DOLLARS. So, in addition to the ABOVE, there were be ObamaCare (which is nothing but a FEDERAL MANDATE that ENRICHES INSURANCE COMPANIES) which of course will also be funded by our TAX DOLLARS.

Enough is enough!

Thank for your comments. The only thing I would like to point out though, is Obamacare does NOT enrich the insurance companies. If you read that law entirely, it is designed to financially crush any private insurance whatsoever. The fine to drop insurance is LESS than the "rebate" that Obamacare offers to employers to funnel employees to the govt insurance pools. I had provided links below to certain parts of the bill in yesterday's post. This by far is not all of them. The goal of Obamacare is to have govt control every single aspect of health for every single person living in America, legally or not. We already have massive free care in place for those that need it; and if they do, God bless them and help them. However, people also have to help themselves. I worked in a major health facility in Cardiology and routinely helped those in need; sometimes paying for care out of my own pocket (shocking to some on this board that say such hateful things if you oppose anything Obama). If you check the links below, you can start to put the puzzle together regarding Obamacare. You can also search on the internet, but I will caution you, it is a very, very time cosuming process. Since my mother is elderly, my motivation was strong. As I stated earlier, Obamacare is truly frightening. No one that supports Obamacare has yet been able to intelligently answer how "sweeping" your financialy records, without you knowledge, anytime they choose, benefits your health. You can readily spot those that have not read any of Obamacare on their own, but have relied on their party interpretation. I rely on no one for my info, and prefer to do research myself. Removes all the party ideologies and misrepresentation when you read it yourself. Incidentally, you will consistently see the phrase "as deemed necessary" at the "will of" or "at the discretion" of the Secretary (meaning HHS secretary). In legalese, that means with or without input, HHS Dept. can deny, eliminate, change any portion of health care for ANYONE at any time. Thank for you an interesting and good luck muddling through it all.

Do people really think taxes are going down without these programs? - naivete

[ In Reply To ..]
It won't happen. They are just going to find another way to funnel your money into the pockets of the superrich anyway. All you will be doing is making it more expensive for everybody to live. The free clinics are on the chopping block, too, and they actually think the charities are going to take up the slack, which again puts it on the middle class to give their hard-earned money to organizations that only give 20% of their donations to the actual charity. The rest goes to the pockets of those running the charity. Charities are a way for the rich to get richer, tax free!

naivete - Concerned

I cannot speak for others regarding what they believe as far as taxes in regards to Obamacare. They will have to read Obamacare and decide what they believe. We all get a tax break if we contribute to charity; so actually any person paying federal tax, regardless of their tax bracket, can use that to their advantage if they choose to.

Premimiums are varied and estimated to cost a 50 yo in CA $575 a month wit ha $1500 deductible in CA. States with lower medical costs could be ...

Health Insurance Is A Poor Measure Of Health Care.Sep 14, 2011
On Tuesday, the Census Bureau released its annual report on health insurance coverage in the United States. News media widely misconstrued the data and presented the problems facing the nation's health care system through a distorted lens. Many major news outlets made a basic error when reporting on the Census Bureau study. The Los Angeles Times wrote that "the number of Americans with no health insurance rose in 2010 to 49.9 million from 49 million the year before." But the figure c ...

Judge Rules Out Health Care LawDec 13, 2010
This is good news.  Now if politicians could just make health care affordable for all.  I'd love the same rates as someone in Idaho or other states have.  Make health insurance competitive, they have to accept pre-existing conditions and nobody could ever be refused health care and I think that would be a great way for a new year.  But forcing people to buy a product they don't want is just not right and I'm glad this judge saw how unconstitutional it is. &nbs ...

IRS Will Enforce Health Care Bill Mar 19, 2010
CBO estimates IRS will need nearly 17,000 new agents to look for people who don't buy a government-mandated insurance policy.
