Favorite Christmas music

Posted: Dec 1, 2011

I'm finally getting into the Christmas mood.  I have Harry Connick, Jr's "When My Heart Finds Christmas" playing and I LOVE it.  My favorites are It Must've Been Ol' Santa Claus and Ave Maria.  He has such a beautiful voice and is such a great performer.

Snoopy and the Red Baron - Trampled underfoot

I know it's silly, but I really like it. (Plus they don't play it that much!)

Snoopy - our hero

No one I know had heard of this song. Being my favorite, I forced them all to listen to it, so they know it now. Also really like Christmas Eve Sarajavo and Wizards in Winter by the Transsiberian Orchestra.

I love the Charlie Brown Christmas CD. My dog King who passed away several years ago loved it too! When I played it,he would run into the room and hang out in his chair by the stereo. He also liked Winton Marsalis.

I like the old classics....sm - Old Woman

Maybe it is because I am an "old woman" but I like Ava Maria by Perry Como. Not even sure if you can get it any more. I also love White Christmas by Bing Crosby and songs of that genre.

My whackier side loves Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer. I'm so flexible, LOL.

I'm with you - Christine

The classics are what it's all about for me. I love the sacred Christmas songs. The same goes for church. If I can't sing the old hymns from a book I don't feel like I'm in church. They have taken away the most meaningful part of the service for me.

Forgot to Mention - Christine

I also love Bing Crosby, etc. and I especially love Mannheim Steamroller Christmas music!

Agree 100% there - Trampled underfoot

I love all the old hymns and miss them terribly. Everything now is "modern" and we're told it's because it's what we prefer. Well, nobody asked me!
I agree 100% - mt

I think the music makes the church. I really loved the old hymns and Christmas classics, cantatas, etc. Going to church these days is like going to the mall. I just can't wait to get out of there and I really don't think you should feel that way about church.
AGREE WITH YOU BOTH - Christine

I know they construct the churches now to hold larger congretations, but the buildings inside remind me of sitting in an auditorium. (And don't forget those huge screen up front. Music is a tremendous ministry. Sometimes many years ago the pastor of the church would have a whole service of nothing but old hymns. I left feeling like I had a definite healing and connection to my faith. How sad it has changed. When I the raised this question at a few churches the only answer I got was that it is to attract the younger generation.
Sorry for typo. Meant "congregations" - Christine/NM

You should shop around then... - just sayin'

There are still plenty of churches out there that cater to the old style of music. My church does more modern music because it appeals to the younger generation. Why? Because they are the most unchurched generation EVER. Some of the music isn't my taste, but the music is just a small part of the whole church service. I'm sure when they first introduced what we now consider the old hymns into the worship services, there were those that considered them too progressive for the times too, but if you want the church to grow and continue to thrive, you have to breathe life into it.

Harry does an incredible rendition of Ave Maria!! - ERMT

He sings it in Italian. Love it.

My favorites - Bad cook

My ultimate favorite is Carol of the Bells. Especially with Celtic Woman singing. I also like the classics with Perry Como and Bing Crosby. Ave Maria with Andrea Bocelli.

Mary Did You Know? - Serious songs

Of the serious songs, I love that one. I usually end up teary-eyed.

It's old, but - - NYMT

Fred Waring's "T'was the Night Before Christmas." Does anybody else know this? It was a staple in my home growing up, and I still listen to it whenever I can. I have the vinyl album, but no working record player. :(

Least Favorite Christmas Music?Dec 02, 2011
I have to admit I can't stand the "Christmas Shoes" song.  I have a high tolerance for schmalz, but that's over the top for me.  I change the radio station when that comes on.    I'm sorta on the fence about "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas".  It's kind of cute, but it has the disadvantage of sticking in my head and I end up singing it the rest of the day! Anyone else? ...

(Top favorite is instructional videos on various topics.) So, I'm someone who loves ambient music whatever I'm doing and like anyone else I have different moods, situations, etc.  Work, study, treadmill, meditation, sleep, doing housework - different music for each.  I used to buy CDs but now I find everything I could want on YouTube.  Sometimes I just stream it directly from YT to speakers, sometimes I convert it to MP3 for playing in the car, etc. You can find videos ...

The Day The Music DiedJul 09, 2017
A stunning – and stunningly disturbing - event took place this past weekend. But unless you were scouring the news very carefully, chances are you didn't even hear of it. The annual Bravalla Festival, one of the most popular summer music concerts in Sweden, was abruptly canceled. There will be no festival next year. Or ever. Given that tens of thousands of tickets were sold, the problem was not attendance. Nor was there any difficulty booking big-name rap and rock stars. No, ...

Need Some Hints About Teenage Music WantsNov 29, 2009
I have gotten together some items for families that may be lacking this year. Already got one family with 4 children their Christmas and have most for a family of 6 (egads) children what might brighten their Christmas morning. Another lady said her sons, 14, 15 and 19 (yes, I know they are older) might like clothing, cologne or something in the music department. I am trying to go as cheap as I can with used toys for the smaller ones but can anyone point me in the right direction of buying ...

Music From Today's Younger Generation. May 22, 2012
I am from the generation of Free Love, Hippies, Vietnam and college demonstrations against war.  As a teenager I watched JFK being assasinated and watched as LBJ took office then.  I suppose that our music reflected the changes in our society and politics too.  We had so many wonderful classic age rock groups and singers -- Rolling Stones, Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Eric Clapton, the Doors, Crazy Joe Macdonald, Fleetwood Mac, Cat Stevens, Carol King and on and on.&n ...

Joy Villa's music sales skyrocketed after the singer wore a pro-Trump dress at Sunday night's 59th annual Grammy Awards. When she arrived at the Grammys, Villa flung off a white frock to reveal a gown of patriotic red, white and blue that urged "Make America Great Again" and had "Trump" in sparkly letters on the back hem. The 25-year-old's EP "I Make the Static" jumped to the top of Amazon's top digital paid albums and reached number seven on the iTunes top album chart aft ...

Or your Hanukkah table or however you choose to celebrate the season?  I'm not here to split hairs on what we call it.  I just thought it would be interesting to share some of our favorite foods of the season....maybe a recipe or two. The Christmas FruitcakeDec 08, 2011
I say there are two kinds of people in this world, those who like fruitcake and those who don't; my son tells me I am wrong, there are three kinds of people in this world, those who are good at math and those who are not.
