Oprah's "Christmas at the White House"
Posted: Dec 14, 2009
Did you watch Oprah interviewing the Os in the White House yesterday?
I would have liked to see also Malia and Sasha, not only Bo, who is, BTW, very cute! Great "high five!" They must have hired a good trainer!;

I saw the ads for it, and my husband and I both thought it was a waste. I don't know if the show is done every year, but if so, I have never watched one. It's like a slap in the face to Americans everywhere who are struggling. How can someone who has what they have go on TV and flaunt it? If it was so newsworthy, why wasn't Barbara Walters doing it instead of Oprah?
Correct me if I'm wrong about the purpose of the show, as I have admittedly never watched it. I assume it's just to feed the curiosity of the general public, but we're not talking about entertainers here. This is our President.
Ahh, I think this is the same for each president - Answers

Done with Bush senior and junior, Jackie Kennedy hosted open house about the renovations done with the White House when people then had fits about how much money was invested in doing just that. We are not talking newsworthy, just people are interested in what the head of state says. Maybe you and hubby just behind in the news, huh?

then how does not watching it make hubby and I "behind in the news"? I watch the 11 o'clock news every night and I don't think it was on there. I also watch the morning news show while getting my kids ready and it wasn't even mentioned.
I think it's flaunting. It doesn't make it right no matter which President it is. I realize that some people are generally curious. I guess I'm more concerned about real news, work, my family, etc. Well, I gotta get back to work now. Enjoy your "news".

Where I live, I have what is called a remote and I use it to see what I want. We live in a free country and you have that freedom. If you choose not to use, then your fault. I think your statement does not hold water. So many presidents and their wives have done the very same thing. Go pick on something else. Apparently you fit into the category of not liking him at all, would not matter if he does or if he does not, same thing to you.

quip at the end of your first post about hubby and I being behind in the news. I'm pretty sure I didn't say anything about my opinion of the President. I believe that belongs on the politics board, which is probably where you belong. Those posts contain a lot of defensiveness and snide remarks such as yours.
Perhaps you should spend less time watching TV and more time sharpening your reading comprehension. I said I didn't watch it, so obviously I used my remote. I also said I didn't think ANY President should be flaunting what they have and that I had never watched ANY of these specials. I guess your value of news is a little different than mine.

this program being a "blatant flaunting."
In every room there are at least 2 Christmas trees, decorated to the utmost, the whole House lavishly decorated and this Gingerbread House, OMG.
Mrs. Obama flaunting her anniversary gift! Tasteless gesture, in these times, when a lot of people are struggling to put bread on the table. Competing on TV who gives whom more expensive gifts? Maybe they think this is "cute" and "endearing," well, it is not.
Also, showing off their "so perfect marriage and Mrs. Obama being so confident and contributing so much to their marriage" is getting already old. Maybe Mrs. Obama talked O into his delusions of having earned a B Plus. O avoided to mention the issues in which, to date, he failed.
Both came across as being rather cold and arrogant. Their on TV shown compassion does not sound sincere.
I want to mention that I was 1 year ago a fervent O supporter.

This White House decoration has gone on so long, what is the matter with you people, that's right, I said you people. People vie for the right to put up their decorations each year there and take great pride in having their decorations in the White House. Not everyone in this land is having difficulty putting bread on the table. I am one of those not struggling. Quit being such haters. It would be different if this were the first time this has happened with the first family shown at Christmas or whenever. Even Queen Elizabeth got on board with the technology age and decided to showcase her home, etc. at Christmas. If a queen can do, I guess our President and First Family can do also.

The OP asked for opinions on the show. If you liked the show, then you have every right to say so and to say what you liked about the show. Others have the right to voice their opinion on it as well. The more posts I read of yours, the more politics I see. This isn't about O (at least not for me). It's about the tactless flaunting at the taxpayer's expense. Who do you think pays for those decorations?
If you like it fine, say so and be done with it. Let other people say what they think without insulting them and calling them names. Grow up!

pearls and diamonds. Sounds ok with this lady. I know I have gotten them in the last several years and I love them myself. Not everyone is in dire shape, do you understand that? I myself am rather well off, but I have compassion with the ones that are going through tough times.
Maybe Mrs. Obama wishes for $ 1,000.--sneakers, the last ones came only to $ 600.--.
Oh, yes, I forgot, she has to keep up with Mrs. Sarkozy's style and elegance!

As far as the Christmas special, I watched it. I watch whenever there is one. The President of the US does make a salary. He can spend it how he wants. That is not our business. I didn't vote on him and I don't really like him as a president. He is, however, my president as well since he received the majority vote. I'm still an American.
I will say here that these folks who come on here to cut others down is getting old. However, so are some of the posts by people who are "well off." If a person thinks that the MT profession cannot change overnight, then ask one who has been in it 37 years. It is not so good right now for me. It has been good in the past. It helped me raise my child, put her through college and give her a nice wedding and a good start in life. I would be embarrassed, though, to get on here and brag at a time like this. I cannot understand why one who is so well off is taking jobs away from those who need them. Just an opinion...God Bless and take care of us all
I have had the same job now for 20 years so - Ok on this end

I didn't watch because I don't care to watch Oprah. I used to watch her but haven't for a long time. I especially think her shows about her "favorite things" are totally out there because who could afford to buy the things she presents on her show anyway? The common working class person certainly can't. Granted she gives them away to the audience, but otherwise no one could afford it.
I would never watch anything Oprah does - or anything about the anointed ones

Love to see the White House dressed up so pretty for the season. I also loved it last time when Laura Bush took us on a tour. Glad to see First Doggie, such a pretty boy! I think Michelle is such good eye candy. Love her outfits and glad to see more bling in the WH. Mr. O and his wife make such an appealing couple. Not into Oprah that much but loved the subjects.
