[ In Reply To ..]I am saddened by this - this is an adult in a position of influence and she is showing the next generation her nasty side. In most cases like this, if one substitutes something else for the fact that she is black (she is in a wheelchair, she is wearing a funny hat - you make something up), it becomes a teaching moment for an 18-month-old - in this case, she has made it ugly.
My children grew up in a community where there were literally no people of color. A family moved in and quickly became an active part of the community - one teenage daughter became a much-sought after babysitter. First my son age 4 at the time, and then my nephew, age 6, were babysat by her - neither one ever mentioned the color of her skin. This is the story that needs to be told over and over again.
