Average college grad $24,000 in debt; 1 in 10 can't find any work at all

Posted: May 5, 2011

I've been watching all the news reports about the colleges that collect big financial aid money and then don't teach the students anything that helps them get a job. Some of them use what they call 'Guerilla Registration' where the students don't even know they've enrolled yet, but the colleges are getting paid. This is one place where ouro country needs to cut costs, not in a way that keeps the poor from being able to get an education, but by cutting out the fraud and abuse.

Debt after med school - Nick

One of my best friends graduated from med school four years ago. She owes $200,000K. That is about average for a medical education. She is now a fellow in cardiology, so is poised to make the big bucks. (She and I hope.) But still, 200K is a whale of a lot of dough.

Debt after med school....sm - Tiny

There was an article in our local paper recently about this very subject. The woman is a med school graduate and works as a resident and cannot pay her loans because she doesn't make enough. I'll have to find the article, because she is either a resident or a family doctor and still can't pay the loans.

I know many college grads who have degrees and cannot find jobs because they have no skills. The degree can definitely open the door for management opportunities, but getting your foot in the door seems to be the problem.

My two DD are one of these people in dept after college. Lets say $50,000. My oldest daughter is a nurse and can easily pay her loans off. Other DD has a degree in Journalism and Psych. Does have a job but not in those fields. Now everyone wants a master degree. She does have the money to go back to school plus jobs will still be scarce. Something has to give. They were told in high school get a college education but it does not help find the job.

Bernie Sanders' Wife Drove Vermont College Into Massive DebtFeb 17, 2016
package. One of the reasons Bernie Sanders is doing well with Millennials is because he's promising free college for everyone. In an ultimate twist of irony, his wife Jane Sanders used to be the head of Burlington College in Vermont and racked up large debts for the small school which almost caused its ruin. Can you say metaphor? progessivetoday.com I’m so sick of this country literally being turned into the home of the “free” ...

Wage Gap: 1978 Average $48K, Average 2010 $33.7K.Aug 01, 2013
It's far worse if you look at the top 10% of that top 1%. Over the past 30 years ownership of our nation's means of production has become clustered in the hands of a few people, who have simply decided to pay us less and themselves more. Note that the wage gap has continued to grow dramatically since these data were gathered, which understate our crisis, which threatens the foundations of our nation itself. So, we're thinking about elections. What are we going to do about it? 3 ...

What Is Your Average Electric Bill Every Month?Jan 05, 2010
I am so frustrated. My electric bill "automatically" goes up $20 or more in the winter. In the summer, I pay $78-80. In the winter $100-120. I called the electric company and they told me it's because we're in the house more often because it's cold out.  I think they're nuts and just don't want to check out the meter. They also stated my appliances could be too old or the gaskets aren't tight (checked before I called and they are tight) and the well pump could ...

None Of Bernie's Proposals Will Raise Taxes For Average....smJan 25, 2016
Americans, except for the health care bill. I don't know many people who make more than $200,000 a year. So consider that 2.2% income tax alongside what comes out of your paycheck for your employer's health insurance and what an average visit to the doctor's office costs (and then imagine what it costs for x-rays and surgery and things of that nature, and heaven forbid you have a medical emergency). Is 2.2% really that high? I've been told Briton pays 10%. The top 2% of Amer ...

Uncomfortable With DebtAug 09, 2011
Does Debt Make You Uncomfortable? After years of being in debt where 90% was not even yours, you feel so much better being debt free. Then something comes up where you have to be in debt again with 80% having nothing to do with you with worry of where that could end up. Really not a fan of debt, I rather use funds that exist, however when something medical comes up there is only so much that can be done, even being needed ones does not have to be comfortable with it. ...

Anybody See The Article On The National Debt?Jan 17, 2011
$14T and growing at a rate of $4 billion a day! Isn't that just ducky! The government borrows 41 cents for every dollar it spends and we, the people,  every man, woman, and child, equals $45,300. I'm so glad my 3-yo grandson will have a good life. Has the TARP money been applied to this debt? I didn't see anything in any article on that. What to do? Raising the debt ceiling will keep us "solvent" for a little while, but what happens when that limit is reached? Will they rais ...
