Sizes getting smaller and prices going up - MaineMT

[ In Reply To ..]
Gas is going up too. I've learned that when I find a good sale on something I buy extra of it if its something we use a lot of. Last week it was a good buy on 90% lean hamburger at $1.69 which is an awesome deal. I bought several packages for the freezer. You never find it at those prices. Walmart runs over $4.00 a pound for 90% lean. I also found family size mac/cheese dinners for $1.00 a box. I bought 10. I use them in a lot of dishes. I fix meals according to what I can find on sale especially the meat.

What kind of dishes do you use with the mac/cheese? - Just curious

Ideas with food - Allysgrandma

Tacos, burittos, hamburgers, lasagna, spaghetti.

If you need ideas I have a bunch of food sites bookmarked:
www.allrecipes.com
www.foodnetwork.com
www.recipeezaar.com (I think I spelled that correctly).

There are so many ideas on the web for food. Look up hamburger recipes in your search engine.

We buy a 10 pound block from Costco (it's the same stuff they put out in packages, but they grind more fat into it). We cook the entire thing into taco meat and freeze in meal sized portions for either tacos or taco salad.

Shop the sales and stock us using a pantry idea for making menus.

Are you familiar with some of these sites?

I find reading blogs of women who are way more organized than I am very inspiring. My sister and I had a challenge in February for food costs and DH and I were able to keep it to $200.00 for the month (which is very good for us) and it was mostly from just paying attention and eating from our freezer and pantry.

Good luck!

everything - is going up

apparently the manufacturers and supplies feel the economy is getting better. I have been couponing big time since April, and I tell a huge difference in what the manufacturers were offering back then as far as price and quantity and what they are offering now. I'm still saving a lot of money regardless by the following sales and paring with double coupons, but the deals were much better back last sping/summer.

Yeah, they think theyre fooling us, too. - sm - Zircon

Everything from cereal to yogurt to granola bars, getting smaller and smaller. Remember when a granola bar was pretty much a quick meal? Eat it with some milk or juice and you're good to go? Now, most of them are only good for 2 bites. Sorry Quaker, and all you other crooks out there - 2 bites is NOT a meal.

And what about potato chips? What better reason to stop eating those things than a medium sized bag costs around 4 bucks, and is still a handful of chips on the bottom, and about 75% air.

And here's one that gripes me in the pharmaceuticals department. I have an Rx for Imitrex for migraines. The blister-packet always comes with one empty pocket! The card will have room for 10 pills, but one is always empty and there are only 9 pills. What a joke.

The other day in the checkout line at the supermarket, I glanced over to the candy & gum rack. A Snickers bar had shrunk to the same, 2-bite size as a Quaker granola bar, yet the price was .99! A frickin' DOLLAR for an itsy-bitsy Snickers? Sheesh.

What about the "half-a-gallon" of ice cream? NM - deb

an appeal to civic duty, some some little pokes to keep that fear actiive. Now, I'm pretty sure fear doesn't work well on me. If-it-bleeds-it-leads and all those (usually incredibly stupid) bank robbers on Fox to remind us what a dangerous world it is are a sure way to get me to change the channel. What I'm really wondering is what the pot roast I just bought told these behavioral psychology profilers about me.  Seriously, they're taking the very little info on ou ...

Confederate History MonthApr 09, 2010
"Virginia's governor made "an unacceptable omission" by not mentioning slavery when he proclaimed it Confederate History Month, President Obama says." I think our president needs to look at the Civil War and the reason for it. The Civil War was not all about slavery. It was about State's Rights. I'll admit that slavery was a huge mistake and should not have been done.  However, slavery is NOT the most egregious stain in our history. Slaughtering the native inhabi ...

My Niece Was Arrested For DUI In KY Last MonthJun 10, 2010
My niece was arrested for DUI in KY last month and had her court date Monday. She was fined $800 and was supposedly told she could never step foot in KY again. Also supposedly the judge told her he was sending her arrest record to Ohio and Ohio would probably take away her driver's license.A) I don't see how someone can be prevented from driving through a state. B) I don't see how Ohio could take away her driver's license for an offense committed in Kentucky. ...

What Is Your Average Electric Bill Every Month?Jan 05, 2010
I am so frustrated. My electric bill "automatically" goes up $20 or more in the winter. In the summer, I pay $78-80. In the winter $100-120. I called the electric company and they told me it's because we're in the house more often because it's cold out.  I think they're nuts and just don't want to check out the meter. They also stated my appliances could be too old or the gaskets aren't tight (checked before I called and they are tight) and the well pump could ...

Grocery Bill Last Month Out Of This World.....Nov 07, 2012
I was watching extreme coupons yesterday and decided to see what I actually spent in groceries for Oct.  A whooping $1300.00!!  I always spend around $800-$1000 but couldn't believe this. (There are 5 of us at home.)  We're not doing anything different, (or at least I think we aren't.)   I think it is just the general increase in regular groceries.  I'm sick about it and am going to do everything I can to cut that bill in half.  I was j ...

House Passes 6-month Spending BillSep 13, 2012
The House voted Thursday to put the government on autopilot for six months, precluding a shutdown through the election and postponing a potential showdown on GOP vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan's agency budget cuts until next spring when Republicans hope to hold more power in Washington. Ryan returned to the Capitol from the campaign trail to vote for the half-year measure, even though it spends billions of dollars more than the Wisconsin lawmaker's budget plan, which has hel ...

Chik-Fil-A Owner Pays Employees During A 5-month ShutdownAug 16, 2015
in Austin, Texas shocked his 50 employees by paying their full salaries during a five-month period when the business shut down. Jeff Glover, who has operated the Chick-fil-A for 15 years, wanted to remodel the building to accommodate more customers, but didn’t want to hurt his workers. So he continued paying them for the full five months. The restaurant, which reopened this week at West Braker Lane and U.S. 183, is now the largest Chick-fil-A in Austin–and surely the chicken retailer ...
