Anyone watch any good scary movies lately?

Posted: Jul 15, 2011

My husband and I rented a new scary movie last night, one that looked really good and really scary, and it was the biggest letdown ever.  In fact, I cannot even think of one scary movie that I have watched in a long time that was actually scary or even good for that matter.

Any recommendations?

which one was it? I'm renting Insidious this weekend. nm - anon

And I thought it was the biggest waste of money. I did not like it at all.

I watched that movie w Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix about the crop circles and aliens. I beleive it was called Signs. It sound terribly hoaky but we were bored. Interestingly, I found it to be extremely frightening. Particularly the part where the Joaquin Phoenix character catches a brief glimpse out the corner of his eye of the very fast-moving aliens. It really was scary in an Alfred Hitchcock like way.
I just recently watched Devil which was directed by - LaLaMT

the same director of Signs, M. Night Shamalyan (or something like that). It found it be pretty creepy and scary. It made me actually say "Holy Shiitake mushrooms" at one point and I'm pretty critical of horror movies. Nothing scares me anymore. Us children of the 70s and 80s cut our teeth on Jason and Freddy, so you really need to step it up for us. :)
M. Night was a writer on that movie, not the director. nm - ....

Directed it, written it.... He had something to do with it. :) - LaLaMT

All I know is it had a twist, like pretty much all of his movies, and it creeped me out.

My son is looking forward to Final Destination 5 but I don't know when it's coming out. He sent me the trailer and it looks pretty good.

We might have different tastes in movies and you might like it. I however found myself bored halfway through the movie and was glad when it ended.

Hide and Seek - With Dakota Fanning

Hide and Seek with Dakota Fanning when she was just a tike. It's not new, but it's one of the best movies I've ever seen. I think it's with Robert DeNiro.

Love that movie!!! - ADB

I actually own that one.

I recently saw D. Fanning in an older movie called "Hounddog" about Elvis coming to LA back in the 50s. It is not scary, but a good movie.

Also, "The Edge" with A. Hopkins and D. Baldwin is an older, but good movie, suspense.

Fatal Attraction - JC

Fatal Attraction is another good one if you've never seen it. Don't forget, those older movies are cheaper to rent than the new releases!

My problem with watching older scary movies is - ADB

I have seen practically all of them!!! I am a scary movie freak, but all the newer ones coming out are just stupid, in my opinion.

Just saw one on Netflix instant watch called - "The Crazies"

Pretty scary and no, it was not about MTSOs! LOL!
That was an excellent scary movie. The worst one I - saw was Paranormal Activity

That was such a disappointment. Not scary and I had to watch it in fast forward to get through the techno nerds and their fake conversations. Lousy people trying to pretend they are actors, lousy directing, lousy special effects, lousy camera angles, lousy everything. Then they came out with a second one. I'm thinking...the world is going insane.

Great flick but loved its (very) predecessor Play Misty for Me - When Clint was a young dude, LOL!

LOVE that movie and, frighteningly enough, I had a cousin who was VERY similar to Jessica Walters' character in that move. Classic line - "Who's been sleeping in Papa Bear's Bed," and another one that contains what this board might consider profane so I won't quote that one.

I never get tired of watching this movie. While it's frightening, I still LOL all the way through it because it reminds me of my cousin and her shenanigans, LOL!

Jeepers Creepers... - sm

I know you're looking for newer ones, though. I love the Wrong Turn and Hills Have Eyes movies too. I'm a scary movie freak who likes the gore and the suspense too. Last House on the Left was great.

ORPHAN - really, really (under my blankie) creepy! NM - anonmt

How about Wolf Creek? - Missy

[ In Reply To ..]
It's an Australian movie from 2005, but I always recommmend Wolf Creek. The first part is so realistic - a bunch of friends on a trip. And then...the second half of the move. Holy cow. It's best if you don't have any idea of the premise when you watch it.

After reading all your responses I have decided maybe it is time I switch genres for a bit - ADB

As I have seen every single one of the movies suggested except play misty for me.

Thanks for all the suggestions though!!!

Scary movies I recently watched - ep

Frailty (good)
Devil (very predictable and dragged out)
The Fourth Kind (Very good)
It (A classic oldy, but very goody)
The Audition (Japanese horror, excellent)
Troll (Norweigian, kind of weird and silly, but cool)

Japanese horror movies remind me of old film noir style, the angles, shots, action...

Lots of choices. When I want something "new" or I haven't seen or heard of before I go to the horror movie web sites. Never overlook the foreign films either.

A Good WatchApr 04, 2010
This is only a little over 3 minues.  I really enjoyed it and wanted to share.  It's about the American Revolution narrated by David McCullough (writer of the John Adams movie with Paul Giamatti).  It starts off with something that Abigail Adams wrote, and talks about if we love our country, the freedoms we enjoy, the blessings of a society that welcomes free of speech, freedom of religion, and freedom to think for ourselves, then we should know how it came to be (who was res ...

It was all about Understanding the Rise of Radical Islam. D'Souza's MoviesJul 06, 2014
I never saw "2016: Obama's America" until today (link below). Someone here on MTStars suggested that we see that first before the newest movie. Now that I've seen it, I'm prepared to see the new one. D'Souza makes 3 predictions near the end of the movie, which he made in 2012, I believe. Two have come true. The third is nearly true as of now. There is also mention made of a "United States of Islam." Could this actually be ISIS? The movie is slow at times, but it is educatio ...

Twightlight Movies/booksNov 27, 2010
Is anyone into the Twighlight movies/books.  I've been looking on the Internet but I'm confused as to how many series there are and what is the 1st, 2nd, 3rd etc.  Have you read the books or seen the movies and which do you prefer.  I'm 50 years old, do you think this is something someone my age would enjoy or is it more a teenager thing.  I do like True Blood, Interview of a Vampire and movies like that.  Just unsure if its a young adult thing or any gend ...
