Rubio Slams Obama's Teleprompter While In Front Of Teleprompters At CPAC

Posted: Feb 21, 2010

Such hypocrites. Demint was crying over Rubio's speech! This must be one heck of a guy!

The Tea Party's choice in the Florida Republican primary, Marco Rubio, began his address to a crowd of conservative conventioneers by taking a shot at President Obama for reading from a teleprompter. He did it while standing in front of two easily visible teleprompters.

It was unclear whether the devices were placed there for him or for other speakers at the Conservative Political Action Committee conference, or CPAC, at which he was a keynote speaker. A HuffPost reporter, however, watched his speech from the front row and Rubio could clearly be seen looking intently and repeatedly at the teleprompters. He also had a stack of papers with him at the lectern and flipped through them as the speech progressed, perhaps unwilling to take any chance he would flub the swipe at Obama.

The first major speaker at CPAC -- a mecca of conservative thinkers and activists -- Rubio drew a crowd that packed a hotel ballroom in Washington, each attendee eager to get a glimpse of the man who has come to personify conservative re-ascendance in the age of Obama. The speech itself was a rather standard red meat affair, with the expected swipes at his primary rival, Gov. Charlie Crist, and even more at the president and his administration.

"2010 is a referendum on the very identity of our nation," he said of the 2010 election "And the issues are so big, so consequential, so generational that many of the old rules of political engagement will not apply. For example a long list of early establishment endorsements will not spare you a primary. Several one line slogans aren't going to spare you the need to discuss policy issues in details. And the old tired political attacks that worked in the past aren't going to get you elected this time."

There were several applause lines. But nothing too exceptional. One of Rubio's most prominent Washington D.C. endorsers, nevertheless, was sufficiently swayed.

"I was standing backstage with tears," Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) said following Rubio on stage. "Reminding myself what we have with Marco. What a treasure."

CPAC hypocrisy (even on the inane teleprompter alleged firestorm controversy) is a legitimate topic of discussion, considering how much air play it has been getting over the past week or two.

Using a teleprompter is not. On the other hand, scribbling on one's palms is really a joking matter.

Nope - call it the ASS-U-ME - reminder.

Obama is absolutely attached to that teleprompter ALL the time--unlike 99% of other speakers. He even used it to speak to grammar school kids. Geesh.

Thats odd. O just addressed Natl Gov Assoc with - no teleprompter for as far as eyes can see.

Where's your hard data on that 99%?

correction to your incorrect information - COZ

[ In Reply To ..]
The teleprompters were in the classroom for a televised speech he was giving AFTER speaking with the wee ones. I do not understand the teleprompter issue. Obama, unlike his predecessor, writes a lot of his speeches and/or consults carefully with his head speechwriter. To condemn an individual for using a device to assure they convey their thoughts completely and correctly is just more silliness from the right. What next? Condemnation for being so vocally weak he has to use a microphone? or Gib forbid, needs glasses? Mean-spirited, petty obstructionism is why the right is in for a big suprise next election. Flip/flop on all y'alls predictions.

I would wager - dmz

Its an old Carl Rove tactic. Remember attack someone on their strengths? (john kerry military). Obama is thought to be one of our greatest presidential speakers so they go round about and attack him for teleprompters to make it appear . .. well I don't know what that is supposed to indicate.

Just one correction to your incorrect information - gotta keep it honest

[ In Reply To ..]
Obama does not write his own speeches. He has many speech writers, Jon Favreau being just one. Of course Obama, like any other good speaker, reviews the speech first.

Obama wrote many of his own speeches, especially before becoming president. He wrote the keynote speech for the DNC in 2004, the Yes We can speech after winning in the South Carolina democraic primary, Race in America and the election night speech, just to name a few out of more than 200 speeches he has made.

Folks who would try to detract from his oratory and writing skills (2 published books with no coauthors) simply show their utter intolerance and petty jealousy of the talents he possesses. I will spare you the high praises he has received from dignitaries from all over the world, including Nobel Peace Prize laureates, who know a thing or two about writing.

That is why they have speech writers. They don't write their own speeches. Nice try though. LOL

Just a little tidbit - Jon Favreau is the one who came up with phrase "yes we can". Now that made me laugh. All these people think it was Obama's brilliancy that came up with that. That will be a good trivial pursuit questions down the road.

Obama collaborates with speech writers, but he doesn't come up with it by himself.

But I will say Obama is good at delivering the speeches written for him. I'm glad we have someone that can speak well.

Ever hear of Christopher Anderson? Just wrote a book last year about "The One" and his Missus. Got a lot of attention at first until it came out that Obama had William Ayres' help writing his 1st book. Then Anderson got dropped like a hot potato because his book exposed the truth about Obama - that he's an empty suit.
You believe Ayers! hehe - NJ

I wasn't referring to Ayers' quote.....but I think it's amusing you think I was. - Anon

Your reading comprehension skills are obviously slipping. According to Christopher Anderson, Ayres ghosted Obama's first book.

Surprised you don't seem to know about this, being such a fan, but here goes:

To flesh out his family history, Obama had taped interviews with various family members.

Andersen writes, "These oral histories, along with a partial manuscript and a truckload of notes, were given to Ayers." Andersen quotes a Hyde Park neighbor, "Everyone knew they were friends and that they worked on various projects together. It was no secret. Why would it be? People liked them both."

Andersen continues, "In the end, Ayers's contribution to Barack's Dreams From My Father would be significant--so much so that the book's language, oddly specific references, literary devices, and themes would bear a jarring similarity to Ayers's own writing."
Old news - NJ
[ In Reply To ..]
Anderson opined that Ayers was a ghostwriter for Obama. Kind of a subliminal attack after Ayers pulled the joke. You know, 9/11 Saddam, repeat often enough, someone will believe it.

Others have said there's so similarity between Ayers style and Obama's. All in all, claiming Ayers ghosted for Obama is an empty argument with no basis in fact. You can lie about it all you like, but it has no legs.

NJ

That's a flat out lie!! - Really?

[ In Reply To ..]
I am so sick of you haters who spread this garbage -- maybe you'd better do your homework: He did NOT use a teleprompter when he spoke to the children -- the teleprompter was for a separate event on the same day talking with journalists.

". . . It's red meat for the president's critics. The only problem is, it's not true.

Here's what is true. Obama did bring teleprompters along for his Jan. 19 visit to Graham Road Elementary School in Falls Church, Va. They were set up in a classroom where the president made a statement to reporters about expanding his Race to the Top program to improve schools. That happened after he chatted with the sixth-graders in a separate classroom -- with no teleprompters . . ."

What facts were misrepresented during W's reign of terror? - Really?
[ In Reply To ..]
I didn't hear people whining about the fact the he used a teleprompter. I didn't hear people whining about all the spending he was doing that got us into this mess? I didn't hear you people whining about him lying to the American people to justify getting us into an unnecessary war. I didn't hear you people whining about the continued tax breaks so as to make all his rich cronies even richer? You mean those facts?
About 8 years worth... - where do I even begin?
[ In Reply To ..]
But since you started in with that "Reign of terror" line you are not worth posting a reply. If you want to be serious, then ask a serious question instead of putting in hate remarks. Just because you hated Bush doesn't mean his presidency was a "reign of terror". Actually that is what we are living through right now. During Bush's presidency many many Americans had good lives. We had homes we could afford, affordable health insurance, lower taxes, a savings, a 401K (which later under the democrat congress got wiped out). We had jobs, and our friends and family had jobs. We were able to live and have a sense that we were living and working for something and to make a future for ourselves and our families. Now that is all gone.

I'll post one incident and that's all you get because of the snippy remark.

One thing that was misrepresented was that when George and Laura Bush were at a school that he had a book held upside down. Guess what...that same photoshop gimick was also used when Bill and Hillary went to visit school children. But you touted it off as though it was the truth.

If you want a serious discussion I would be more than happy to provide more examples, but since you are not...

Goodbye
Were you asleep?? Most of the issues you name - like jobs, wiping out of funds
[ In Reply To ..]
loss of homes were happening when Bush was still in office. What we are dealing with now is the aftermath of Bush's "Reign of Terror" and it will take awhile to clean a mess that large. I know Obama is not perfect but I also know that Bush is largely responsible for the mess we are currently digging ourselves out of and your selective memory does not change that fact.

BTW,it is obvious that the picture of him reading the book upside down was photoshopped and I always knew that, but it was funny because he always came off as such a complete fool that even knowing that, it was funny.

Can not believe you would even try to compare Obama to the Shrub!! Obama could be in office for the next 30 years and not come close to the amount of stupid quotes that Bush did. Best you try to stick to the message and not try to make Obama look like an idiot. You may not like him,and that is okay, but one this this man is NOT is stupid!

Incidentally, didn't you ever wonder why Bush is the only one is his family aside from his wife who has a southern accent? The man was born in Connecticut. His dad, his brothers don't have that accent.

Oh, and check out the Broadway play about Bush as depicted by Will Farrell.
