Anyone have a garden?

Posted: May 28, 2014

Just wondered what are some good tomatoes to plant.  Started out with 3,  Rutgers, Mr. Stripey and Brandywine.  Need to add some more if not too late in the season.  Any favorites?

Cherry, grape or roma. - I always found the

bigger varieties too prone to getting half-eaten by something or splitting before I could get to them. Cherries usually don't make it out of the garden for me, but at least I'm the one doing the eating!

Well, the answer depends on a lot of things--sm - anon

One of those things is what you want to do with them, can, dry, eat fresh, etc.

One of my favorite cherry tomatoes is sungold. Another one many like that is easy to find is yellow pear (I like sun gold better). Both dehydrate well.

In my climate most paste/roma type tomatoes do not do as well but Amish paste is one I like and does fairly well. I would like for determinate types if you have a short season or if you want a bunch at once for canning. Green zebra is unusual but good. I have known some people who buy tomatoes at the beginning of July when they are deeply discounted and still come away with plenty. That does not work in my mountain climate (first frost by around October 15th) but if you have a late freeze date, it may be a cheap and fun experiment. Happy gardening!

Loved sungold. Threw yellow pear away. - It was awful and bush grew a lot of tomatoes

Looking for great tomatoes other than cherry at this point.
Have you tried any of the black/purple tomatoes--sm - anon

Some of the different colors have different flavor profiles. My favorites are the dark ones like Black Prince, Cherokee Purple (although that is a poor performer here), Japanese Black Trifele, etc. White tomatoes often have a very light flavor (but are not as good for canning as they have less acid).

I agree on yellow pear, I did not care for it at all but there are others who adore it.
I could not give yellow pear away. Trying Cherokee Purple and Rutgers. - Limited space.

I just wanted a tomato that tastes good not because I don't have much room with enough sun.

I so want to get cherry tomatoes this year - wheres_my_job

Just haven't gotten around to it. It stays pretty warm into the fall, so I think if you start with a plant, you can still get a bunch of tomatoes (upper Midwest). I also want to grow A LOT of basil. Gosh, it's almost June, I think I need to get the garden thing in gear.

I agree, animals eat the bigger tomatoes. Weirdly enough I planted chive a year (or more) ago - and it's just this year starting to grow with any vigor (not that I have much of it). I've noticed this also with mignonette I planted (an old-fashioned flower that's supposed to smell sweet) - it didn't grow at all, and now this spring, there it is.

I've somehow gotten off the topic of tomatoes.

I love my scrubby garden.

Early Girl and Big Boy. They're very juicy and on the mild side rather than very acid, and that's what I like. Early Girls are smaller and ready before Big Boy.

My bestest friend in the summertime is the farmer - wiht home grown tomatoes

Until about 2 years ago I had a farmer who sold me home grown tomatoes at $1.00 a pound. He asked me one time "do you can those?" I said nope, salt and washing them off and into my tummy. I have had to search to find another person this year, my other farmer came down with dementia but hopefully I have one in the wings now. I love my tomatoes. I have no green thumb so would not torture any tomato.

I love getting tomatose in those cardboard baskets - wheres_my_job

with the wire handles. We also get tomatoes from a family friend, a big grocery bag full - sometimes I make pizza sauce. They are those big delicious tomatoes, a pleasure to slice through. He also grows heirloom tomatoes.

Arkansas Traveler is another favorite of mine--sm - anon

It is a good slicer, great flavor and may be common enough to find plants of.

Vegtable Garden In The Front Yard?May 22, 2012
I am of the school that you plant flowers and shrubs and bushes in the front yard for good curb appeal.  You make your house look very appealing and pretty, but we have newer neighbors next to us that have decided to plant a vegtable garden out front.  They are growing carrots and onions and such in front of the house, while the rest of the block looks pretty, my mid summer, this yard next to ours is going to look like a weedy jungle.  They bought a townhouse, not a farm house.&nb ...
