Here's what I'll do for Thanksgiving,

Posted: Nov 1, 2012

Our OKC homeless shelter has an adjunct service to help take care of pets of homeless people.  I frequently donate to that.  While the homeless people get their Thanksgiving meal, they need people to volunteer taking care of the pets, feeding them, playing with them, etc.  I'm not a people person.  I will volunteer for this.

sorry, struck home with me. I can watch the news and see a natural disaster that kills 100s of people and feel sad about, but not enough to actually cry or anything.

One animal dies and I'm crying like a baby.

I don't know why that is.... I think I'm broken! haha

I'm the same way! - see msg

I can watch the most guesome of all gruesomes in the movies or TV shows, but I cannot handle when they kill a dog or horse...I can't look and get all upset. But get that bad guy or smart-a$$ human and I'm feeling all good about it.

I hope to think the media did this to me and it all started with slasher movies, rather than me being so cold I'm cruel these days.

I know one thing for sure - if it came down to some of those situations I see in the movies - I COULD and most definitely WOULD pick up the gun given the opportunity...and fire without a second thought.

sad, huh?

I think it is because animals cannot understand - L&L

why bad things happen to them and they depend so much on us for care. It is completely different with people who are supposed to be able to take care of themselves. I'm glad animals are now being considered in disasters too. They don't have TVs or media telling them to evacuate, just instinct.

In addition to disasters, I also think there should be - better options for animals displaced - sm

when their elderly owner dies or has to go into assisted living. Too often, those poor pets (often elderly, themselves!) end up at the pound.

Liking animals more than people - P

[ In Reply To ..]
I love my animals as well as other animals and it causes me concern when I see one on the street, I think it needs a home or some food. I have carried food around for such times. My family is not around so I am very glad to have my kittycats here. They provide so much joy for me.

I hate visiting the animal shelter because all the - kitties there make me sad... (sm)

[ In Reply To ..]
especially the black or adult ones you know will never be adopted. I want ALL of them!

It would be easy to become a cat-hoarder, thinking I could save them alll, but I have to keep reminding myself I can barely care for and feed the 2 cats I already have, on an MT's pay.

That's how I am. Sometimes I wonder (sm) - Animal lover

[ In Reply To ..]
why I feel so much more sympathy for animals than I do people. Don't misunderstand, when I hear about a child being kidnapped, or a story like that, I feel sad for the family, but I don't cry. If I read a story about a dumped animal or an abused animal, I will think about it for hours and cry. I sometimes wonder why. I don't really think this is normal, but I guess I've never claimed to be that. :)

My bird is more human than some humans - Nancy

Brimley, my Quaker parakeet, is more human than a lot of humans I know. He has compassion and empathy. He talks, in context. He understands humour (at about a 2-year-old level). He speaks in full sentences and uses the "I" pronoun correctly.

Yup, I can watch human carnage without a care, but animal suffering will send me running for the Kleenex.

OMG - I love your parakeet's name! -nm - Meerkat =^..^=

Brimley - Nancy

Thank you. His name comes from Wilford Brimley (the actor) who did the Quaker Oats commercial. If figured, since my bird is a Quaker, the name was appropriate.

So, What you are saying is - See Msg

...if you are lying in the street suffering and dying, but there's a bird or caterpillar next to you, I ought to save the bird or caterpillar? Okay, wish I knew who you are and I would honor your wishes, so put a sign on yourself. Did I misunderstand your post?

if you see me dying next to one of my cats, take care of my cat. He cannot survive w/o me.
Sad, Sad, Sad - Saddened By This
[ In Reply To ..]
Very sad that you don't value yourself. I wish you peace.
pretty condescending - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
some "people" (and I use the term loosely, at best) find value in things outside themselves. They call that "humility." To depreciate anothers values in life says a lot about your own character. I wish you peace, as well, and compassion for what another feels is most important in their lives. Animals of all kinds love "unconditionally". Humans do not.
I value things outside myself - I also value other HUMANS
[ In Reply To ..]
I value plenty of things outside myself, but I don't value animals over humans, sorry. And I still think it's sad that someone would rather suffer and die than have the caterpillar or whatever next to them die.

Guess what? I have 5 cats and 4 birds, but I tell you that the people in my life are most important to me.

I also think this "love unconditionally" is a bunch of bunk. Why should someone love me unconditionally if I've behaved horribly? It's a selfish concept to think that one should be able to behave horribly and someone else still love them and bow down to them.

I know people who are like that. They treat their human counterparts like crap, but expect unconditional love and adoration in return from the humans in their life, when they themselves don't give it. THAT is selfishness. So, they treat their cat, dog, bird, whatever very kindly, which they should, but not INSTEAD of their husband, wife, kid, friend...

Nobody should abuse anything or anybody.
you are entitled to your opinion....as I am to mine - anon
[ In Reply To ..]
and I am sorry that you have been so abused throughout your life. Your anger and bitterness surely seeps through you words. People can "say the words" of "I would give my life for" or "I would die for" but when it comes right down to it, the giving of their own life in the prospect of keeping someone else alive is just words and I don't think they would actually do it...unless, of course, there was something in it for them. An animal, however, will truly give his life for the person who cares for them, without second thought or expectations of reward. and why should someone love you unconditionally if you have behaved horribly????..... "forgiveness". Doing what Jesus would do. that's why. but again, you are entitled to your opinion and me to mine. I hope you truly find some peace in your life...that would include ALL creatures...not just humans.
I Said - See Msg
[ In Reply To ..]
I said that nobody should love me unconditionally if I treat them horribly. I also said I value all life, not just humans. I just put humans first, that's all. I personally would save a human over an animal, sorry, my bad. What must I be thinking?
I think you are a realist and have compassion - for both humans
[ In Reply To ..]
and animals.
When my dog does not get a bite of my - mac and cheese
[ In Reply To ..]
that I am eating in front of him, because he already ate, believe me, he does not love me unconditionally. I swear dogs can give dirty looks. It is even worse when I am eating those little Hostess Donut Gems and he does not get one.
What I am saying is... - Nancy
[ In Reply To ..]
No, that's not what I am saying. I mean that my bird treats me with more compassion and humanity than a lot of humans out there. Then again, he doesn't play well with other birds, so it's probably not much different from the way humans treat other humans.

No! You are not broken. - Xena

[ In Reply To ..]
You have a good heart and recognize the helplessness of these creatures who give their humans unconditional love and loyalty. Humans, for the most part, can fend for themselves. Animals rely on humans to care for them.

Sad that you VALUE - Animals more than people

[ In Reply To ..]
I value human life more than an animal life. Sorry, call me crazy. So, if you see a human being suffering and dying, but there is a cat or dog or duck next to the human, you feel worse for the animal? Very sad.

I'm all for animals, but no, they are not more important to me. Give and take is what makes life go 'round, not just TAKE from an animal who doesn't have a higher function of intelligence to know you only like it because it can't hurt YOU, and that YOU can control it.

I'm sorry for the people-type in your life who care or cared about you and that you have obviously shut out, which you obviously must do, or you wouldn't be so bitter.

We've all been hurt by people, but only the selfish decide that ALL humans are horrible.

Just had to say hello to a fellow okie! - nm

[ In Reply To ..]
stating how you prefer animals to people and you would save an animal first before a human, then turned around and talked about cooking a turkey, cornish hen or a duck for Thanksgiving. So if a turkey, a duck and parakeet are walking down the street and a national disaster were to happen, would you save the turkey, duck or the parakeet? After all, they are all birds?

ThanksgivingOct 10, 2011
I know it's a little early but i'm a planner.  What do you usually do at Thanksgiving?  This will be new for me as it is now just me and my 10-y/o son.  In the past he'd usually go hunting with his dad and I'd cook/bake all day.  They'd come home with any "wayward" buddies for dinner.  My parents live 4 hours away and I'm not really too keen on just sitting around staring at eachother or the TV (as what happens with any other visit). Any id ...

So How Was Everybody's Thanksgiving?Dec 01, 2013
On Thanksgiving I cooked for my cats, then worked and ran out of work after 4 hours and watched TV and took PTO.  We got together the day after and I spent the day with my sister's family.  I can't believe how big my great-great-nieces and nephews are getting.  The oldest is 4, the youngest is just under 7 months.  I have a hard time believing how grown up everybody is and realizing we (my sister and I) aren't even the old ones anymore, the kids ...

What Do You Think Of Stores Being Open On Thanksgiving? Nov 22, 2012
I can see that people in the medical field are necessary, but I think retail people should not be forced to work on Thanksgiving to increase the big store profits.  Years ago, we had a huge conflict here and eventually voted on a city ordinance allowing stores to remain open on Sunday.  At that time, I thought it was a good idea because I had to work Saturdays and needed the time to take care of business.  I think this camping outside of the stores and people actually getting hu ...

Thanksgiving Was Pretty Good Here. I Just Have One Gripe.Nov 25, 2010
Do NOT bake an apple pie in a convention oven.  LOL  The top crust never browned even though I baked it for 50 minutes. I wound up putting it under the broiler for 3-4 minutes, watching carefully that it didn't burn.
