To San Frannie - love your answer below on aging sm

Posted: Feb 16, 2010

I am 42 and have been wondering if the good years are over. I love to rollerblade but have hardly done it in the last few years...you just motivated me, thanks :)

Thanks! Glad you liked it! - sm - SanFrannie

If you're 42, you're just a KID! (42 is the new 22, you know...)

Taking up inline skating was the best thing I ever did. Great exercise, low-impact, and best of all, CHEAP. All you need are your skates, and you can go just about anywhere. Met most of my current friends through skating. Inline skating led to also doing roller skating on "quad" skates, and then to roller disco. (Yes, RD can still be found here and there!) Once you're proficient, some of the larger towns or cities have group skates, often at night after most of the traffic is gone. San Francisco's Friday Night Skate is the original... first in the world. It started after the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake damaged the Embarcadero freeway enough that it had to be torn down. While it sat empty for many months, someone got the idea that it would be fun to sneak up there and skate on it around midnight; thus, the "Midnight Rollers" were born. The current group skate goes through the city, up and down hills, thru tunnels, etc. There is also a very small one Tuesday nights in Tiburon in the north bay. Los Angeles has a Fri. nite skate, too. The largest is in Paris, with a police escort and something like 20,000 participants. Also London, and other cities of the world. The big thing now is "freestyle" (skating patterns around little cones). We even have a woman from England, Naomi Gregg, come to SF every year to give a clinic on it. San Francisco has great places to inline skate: The wide sidewalk along the Embarcadero on the waterfront, the Marina Green and Ft. Mason Park, and best of all, Golden Gate Park, which has several wide, smooth streets closed off to cars on Sundays and Holidays (Sat's. too, in the summer). Every Sun. afternoon we do outdoor roller disco at 6th Ave. SF also has a new program called "Sunday Streets" (patterned after a VERY successful model in Bogota, Colombia), where they close of several streets in different areas of the city on different weekends to cars from about 10 AM to 3 PM, and the street becomes "recreational asphalt", for skaters, bikers, joggers, walkers, etc. It's been so popular with citizens and merchants alike, that SF has expanded the program from 3 Sundays 2 years ago, to 6 last year, to 9 this year. There are also different activity "pods" within the closure: Salsa dancing lessons, hoola-hooping, skating lessons, yoga, Tai Chi, etc. Even kayaking on the Sundays when the event is held on the Embarcadero. Next time I go, I'm planning on doing the Salsa dancing.

Anyway, I'm glad you're thinking about taking up skating again. You're never too "old".... I have a friend in her 70s who's had heart surgery and a hip replacement, and she skates more now than ever. (Not as fast or as hard, but she still does it, and that's what counts.)

Is It Aging Or Is It ADD Or Is It Alzheimer's?Jun 23, 2015
Do any of my fellow MTs have (or think you might have) ADD or ADHD?  I'm 60 and have been an MT for over 30 years.  I didn't "used" to have trouble concentrating.  I could whip out those reports with speed and accuracy.  These days, though, I find that my attention span goes on vacation several times a day.  Learning new programs takes twice the amount of time that it used to.  I have to read and re-read the instructions over and over again.  I looke ...

Small Towns Watch Aging Hospitals ShutterMar 05, 2016
Saw this on PBS last night. My heart breaks for these small towns. In a lot of them, the hospital was the anchor. People have lost jobs, stores have closed, seniors have to travel hundreds of miles for health care. What has become of this country? More than 50 rural hospitals have closed since 2010 (during Okingme's reign) as well as many more community hospitals throughout the land. ...

Tea Party Republicans Love Love Love Ted CruzOct 18, 2013
even among Republicans, according to a survey from Pew Research. But the group is still potent within the Republican Party — which means that Sen. Ted Cruz gets a bit of good news on an otherwise bleak day. "Tea Party" is a necessarily vague affiliation. There are members of Tea Party groups, of course, but Pew largely had to allow poll respondents to self identify. And a lot of Republicans did so. About four-in-ten (41%) Republicans and Republican leaners agree with the Tea Pa ...

Answer Me This.....Dec 20, 2009
What do YOU think is the USA's greatest problem today?  We all know that we're in trouble, but in total honesty, what do YOU see as the biggest problem? Secondly, do you have any idea how to correct it? Slams/bams/etc. most probably will not get a response here.  In fact, I would prefer that they did not. Thanks for any participation! ...

Question With Probably No AnswerMar 22, 2012
no answer that hasn't already been mentioned here at one time or another."When I am elected," so saith Mitt, "the first thing I'll do is repeal the National Health Care law.""When I am elected," also saith the Mitt, "I'll cancel Planned Parenthood." First on health care---how can one person do that? Would he not need Congressional approval? Last time I looked, the President executed the law; the President is not empowered to repeal the law.On Planned Parenthood two questions: ...

I posted on Gab board about being estranged from my daughter.  We have not talked to each other for about 6 weeks.  I noticed that her personality has changed -- going from being a happy and kind-spirited girl to being very angry and short-tempered all the time.  I was staying at her home to help with her children and with housework while she worked full-time.  Because of her bad temper and constant yelling and screaming at children, I could not stay any longer.  She jus ...

Answer Me This, ChristiansOct 25, 2013
Okay, so I just heard on the news that some food server who was gay was not given a tip by the customer because he was gay. The customer left a note to the effect that they could not leave a tip, because the waiter, what with being gay, was an affront to God. The customer did say the service was fine, but he could not leave a tip due to the server being gay. Answer me this you Christians. Was that Christian of the customer? We've had discussions here where gays are told they will go to h ...

Question And AnswerJun 01, 2014
My husband comes to me and makes a statement (i.e. "I'm going to take a shower now") and gets miffed that I don't "answer" him.  It is a statement, not a question.  If he had said "Do you need in the bathroom; if not, I am going to take a shower now," I would have answered yes or no.  Is he wanting my permission?  I am just not sure how to respond when he makes statements and waits on me to ......... what? His other manner of speaking is to make the statement and t ...

I didn’t want the answers buried because the original post is pretty far down the page.   You don't HAVE to take the compensatory option. You volunteer for it. If you want your OT paid in cash the week you work it, then so be it.   You said: "One other thing I'm not finding or maybe it's there and I don't understand the legal jargon: Is the OT that is converted into PTO time and a half? Do I get a half hour extra for every hour of OT?"   Yes, that&# ...

What Is The Answer To Handling ISIS?Sep 16, 2014
I've read a lot of bickering about this topic and yet I have yet to see someone give an answer or at least a good suggestion of what to do.   We never should have gotten rid of Saddam Hussein.  Yes...he was a dictator and treated his people poorly but he also kept extremists like ISIS out of Iraq.  We went in and got rid of Hussein and the extremists have taken over that country.  We got rid of Bin Laden and that hasn't stopped the craziness.  We got rid of Mu ...

I have a very dear friend of nearly 40 years and I have not one thing negative to say about her except that she asks what I think are inappropriate questions. I am getting together with her soon and know she will ask the price of something BIG that I bought. She has no idea how long I saved and what I sacrificed to do this. Does anyone ha ...

Possible Alternative Answer To Food Stamp FraudMay 17, 2015
Well, unable to get to church due to a knee joint flare (not mine) and playing nurse, I noticed others were asking below for alternative solutions to food stamp fraud other than Scott Walker's expensive and absurd plan to overhaul the EBT system to restrict types of food and drug test recipients.  So how about this?
