Silly (or not so silly) dream...Have one?

Posted: Oct 19, 2010

Do you have a silly dream of doing something totally different with your career or life?

Lately, my husband and I have somewhat seriously been talking about opening a mexican food burrito/taco shop.  We have great recipes that are relatively simple and inexpensive, and would love to just open up a very small shop that handles only takeout orders for a few types of burritos and/or tacos, rice and beans.  Something small with the BEST food around, even though not fancy.

What are YOUR dreams, something you imagine just walking away from your current career/lifestyle to pursue?  That "over the rainbow" vision that keeps you going day to day, striving for something better or at least more rewarding?

I'd love to hear if anyone else has similar aspirations to chuck it all and start an entirely new life adventure!

Oh, I thought you meant dreams at night. Was gonna tell bout my - poop sandwich diet dream. But never mind. nm

Eeeeewwww! (Still, that sounds like a pretty - effective diet, to me!) LOL

Silly dream turned reality - Coltsfan

My husband and I jumped in with both feet this summer to say the least. We sold the house and are living in our RV in central Indiana in the summer and leaving Monday for Ocala, FL for the winter. My husband started a custom golf cart business 4 years ago and really wanted to go with it full time. We moved in July and so far so good. He is doing well with the carts, time is flying and we\\\'re having a great time. We plan to go someplace different each winter but back to Indiana in the summer where our family lives. This week is the toughest by far. We\\\'re leaving our family and friends for the winter, and it is pretty hard. I\\\'m hoping once we get settled in Florida it will get easier. Good luck with whatever you decide!

My dream has always been to open my own bake shop - see message

I LOVE to bake. I'd love to either have a bake shop or baking from my home and deliver. Cakes, pies, bread, scones, donuts, you name it and I want to bake it. Just always been an aspiration of mine. In school I studied to be a chef, but never did work out.

i would love love love to open up a small bakery. I would love to have cupcakes, scones, muffins and cookies. Nothing too elaborate - just yummy and someplace you can swing through and pick up homemade dessert for whatever the occasion.

I'll bet you loved the movie Chocolat - see message

Now that's my ultimate dream. I'd love to go to another country and open a store like hers.

I'd also love to learn how to make Belgian chocolates.

I don't have any dreams anymore. Nothing ever seems to work out - Backwards Typist

Told DH it's because of our last name and it seems to be bad luck.

Back in the late '70s, a friend and I wanted to open an Italian food mart. Her parents, who were very, very Italian, had to drive to NYC if they wanted true Italian cheeses and meats. We figured there were plenty of Italian descendents living in this area that would keep the shop going. Our husbands laughed at us, so we gave it up. No support at all. I 'sort of' still have that dream, but with all the rules and regulations nowadays, it would be a bit challenging and I'm not into hefty challenges anymore.

A couple weeks ago, I asked him what I could do with the rest of my life that would give me enjoyment and a couple bucks a month, he told me cooking. So, what could I do with that? It also would require the stiffling regulations as the Italian food mart. So, no dreams anymore.

I live in a little lake town (pop about 3000) and you would not believe the business our Mexican restaurant does! They have restaurants in 2 or 3 other towns to boot. Their atmosphere is authentic and their food is great. I say go for it, and best of luck!

As for me, still trying to figure out which dream I want to try next. Last October I tried starting a transcription company (STL), it was a flop, couldn't even get a nibble, but I say sometimes THANK GOD FOR UNANSWERED PRAYERS.

Unfortunately, financially I am not able to pursue my passions just yet(that and 2 new grandbabies). At 40, I truly long for something more meaningful as far as a career/life path. My hope is to within the next year or two be able to buy a good SLR camera and travel a bit. I am am quite the nature buff and am sure I could get some great shots to sell (my hubby could make the frames!)

In addition, I have a book of poetry and a children's book (actually completed) and working on a book of fiction (fantasy type). I haven't sent them in as I was hoping to self-publish (a dream to be sure) and am deathly afraid of rejection.

The one thing I have been seriously considering is opening up a quilting/fabric shop. My daughter says, "You're crazy, you can't quilt!" I told her, "I don't want to make them, I just want to have a little store of my own selling supplies to those who do, and I could have someone host classes and they could get their supplies from me." That and my mother-in-law is fabulous and could show me the ropes and maybe make a quilt for the Grand Opening Giveaway!

I guess my biggest problem is that I seem to have ADD when it comes to my aspirations and dreams and my mind is constantly jumping from one idea to the next and I never complete anything, that and people telling me it's impossible. My mother, bless her heart, says I'm a fairy living in fairyland full of fantasies and unrealistic expectations and need to get back to reality. I say, "Nothing wrong with dreaming!" I just need to hone in on one dream instead of a multitude and go for it. What would this world be without dreams! Not worth living if you ask me.

Wish me luck, and the best of luck to the rest of you, too!

You sound a lot like me! - Dreamer

I can totally relate to the mind jumping from one idea to the next, etc. It's so frustrating!

At least you have completed some books. I have all kinds of screenplay and short film ideas jotted down but nothing completed. I am also always thinking of books, business opportunities, and great ideas for commercials. If only I were young again so could go to school for a creative career. - I am not giving up on certain ideas yet though.

Do you take anything for your ADD? I have never mentioned it to a doctor, but I am tempted to see if medication would help me focus a bit.

Meds for bipolar/depression - Tina

[ In Reply To ..]
You know, I have never been diagnosed with ADD, but maybe I truly do have it. I have been tried on a wide variety of meds for bipolar/depression (just about everything...Prozac was the worst...felt good for about 2 months then went manic). Currently on Celexa and it has helped me more than anything. Cost me $265.00 for that script...thought maybe my thyroid was acting up so had it tested. Of course I have no insurance...can\'t afford it.

Guess I am just depressed (could be seasonal, but more likely situational). Feel as though I am drowning in debt with no way out (just my day to day bills...no credit cards or expensive loans, other than my old student loan, which I will never be able to pay off, and IRS as my husband worked as an IC truck driver for awhile last year...big mistake).

With the direction the MT business is headed and the fact that I went from making $20-$30 per hour 2 years ago and now can barely make minimum wage, easy to see why I\'m depressed!

What is wrong with this world. Such a division in wealth. All I want is a to pay off my little fixer upper of a home (1-1/2 years left if I don\'t loose it first, 2 months behind currently) and be able to enjoy what time I have left.

I guess to some 40 is young, but I feel as though I have not accomplished much these past 20 years (other than raising a wonderful family). I just hope that I have at least another 20-30 years of good health and can do something to help make this world a better place. Thing is, where/how do we start???

Good luck on your dreams/projects, truly, I wish you the best!
Tina, have you heard of this? - Dreamer
[ In Reply To ..]
I completely understand your frustration and depression. I won\'t go into it but have had some life events that have changed my view of the world. Like you, I feel I want to do what good I can (and it never feels like enough). I also get worn out easily (maybe all that stuff in my head?), so it\'s tough to do a lot beyond normal obligations. I too have grandchildren I am involved with. Beyond enjoying them, I try to remember that maybe I can influence them to become great people who will also want to help the world.

Trust me, 40 is still young. I am 50 and doing the usual thinking that I wish I had realized how young 40 is when I was there. ; )

It\'s too bad healthcare is such an issue for so many of us. It\'s is becoming unaffordable even for people with insurance. I am baffled that there is so much fighting over such an issue and not cooperation so that we can all benefit. You would think our country would be smart enough to research what other countries are doing and combine the things that are working well for them. Capitalism has it\'s great points but certainly promotes greed and misfocused priorities. - I recently heard on the news that Sweden gives parents lots of time off (like 14 months between the two or something) after the birth of their babies, and they get paid a good portion of their wage for the time off! Many things like this might help create more stable children/teens/adults and prevent issues down the road.

Anyway, I am rambling here. I wanted to give you this link. Barnes & Noble has a free self-publishing site where you can publish to e-book. The books are then for sale and you earn money on any sales. If you got started this way, maybe you could then afford to publish into paper as well. It would be worth a try! : )
I will definitely check this out. - Tina

For my book of poetry, this would be great! The other book, however, will be a picture book (5th-6th grade), and the illustrations will be as important, if not more so, than the text. It is written in rhyme, which makes it hard to get a publisher, but I think it is pretty good, though my mom and aunt weren't crazy about it. They thought I used "too big of words". I think they more had in mind that it was for little kids. I tried to tell them that it was for older children and that the illustrations (as well as reading for meaning in the sentence) would help them if they didn't know the meaning of a word...besides, I could always include a glossary.

Thank you for sharing :-)
Tina... did you know citalopram is generic for Celexa? (see message) - lindawordlady
[ In Reply To ..]
Over the years I have been tried on multiple meds for anxiety/depression and this has worked the best for me. First took Celexa for a couple years and then insurance refused to cover it, so my doc switched me to citalopram. I have not had insurance for oever 2 years and I pay just $4 a month for the Rx. I usually get 3-months at a time for $12. This is through Walgreens for people w/o insurance. You just have to join their prescription program for I think $25 a year. It is well worth it, believe me. Also, some of these pharmaceuticals are willing to provide it FREE of charge if you just ask them and show them you cannot afford it. You could work with your primary care MD on that or even contact them directly. I wish you luck. You say you are 40.... you have many good years ahead and anything is possible. I've god 22 years on you and wish I could be 40 again; it is going just so fast. The best to you!
Thank you! - Tina

I get my script through Wal-Mart too on their $4.00 plan. I guess I should have clarified my earlier post. I went to the doc for a visit to get a script and had them check my thyroid thinking it might be bad and for the visit and the lab (just a TSH) the price was in the $250 range. I tell you when the bill came in I was shocked. I had no idea it would be that high for a visit and to check a TSH level.

I've been putting my PAP off as I can't afford it (about $350) and really need it as well. Had to have a biopsy done a few years back as had an abnormal PAP (luckily had insurance at that time and thankfully came back as inflammation and next 2 were negative).

It's been 3 years since then. I think I will check with the health clinic though and see what they can do for me. I know they base on income and with my pay being what it is now, it should be just about free.

I have HPV, which makes me more susceptible for cervical cancer, and I know I'm an idiot to keep putting off that PAP. I think I'll give them a call next week.

I do thank you for your post though, it may well help someone else who isn't aware of Wal-Mart's $4 program. In fact, I think the original script was for name-brand Celexa and I had to ask if they had the generic on their $4 plan, so they called and had the physician switch it. Quite a difference in price!
