Silly Old Lady Hobby Question
Posted: Jun 30, 2013
Some time ago I asked about making jewelry and am going to try to do learn to do that when our community ed classes start up again in the fall. In the meantime, I have a funny question. (Maybe I am going into second childhood.) Do any of you draw or paint? I love to sketch and I also like the Dover coloring books, which are quite detailed and good for adults. Does anyone else on here like to draw/color?;

Hi! I have always loved to color. Where do you purchase the Dover coloring books? My grandmother always sat and colored with me as a child and now when I go visit my grand daughter we sit and color too. I find coloring very relaxing :) My sister paints with water colors and chalk is actually very good at it. She is retired now having worked 36 years as an ER registered nurse. Enjoy your hobby!

I enjoy using colored pencils. They blend so nicely! I'm delighted to hear that so many people enjoy coloring. We enjoy the natural history coloring books - sea life, butterflies, etc.

It must be an MT thing because I also love to color but I have trouble finding good coloring books - I remember the ones I had in childhood, I don't think they are as good now. I will check out the Dover site. There are also anatomy and physiology coloring books. I also like paint by numbers and jigsaw puzzles. A few years ago I went to a workshop/class at work, I don't even remember what for - they supplied paper and crayons, it must be a stress reliever. I also remember it being in the morning and that we had scrambled eggs. Coloring and food, what more could a person ask for?

I just bumped into this charming, brief (~2:00 minutes) video about art and coloring.
I remember you! - I had offered some suggestions

I am one of the people who recommended taking some old bracelets and using the beads.
Anyway, it is so interesting that you mention coloring. I totally cannot draw, but I just LOVE to color. I am 58 years old, and have not colored since I was like 22, when a girlfriend "confessed" that she loved to color. We had gone on a vacation for 2 weeks together with our husbands, and my GF and I colored every day for the 2 weeks!
It is so funny that you mention it now. In recent months (due to some stressors in my life), I have wanted to buy a coloring book and crayons and go for it! I feel so silly, but I think I will just buy the stuff and do it!
I cannot draw for the life of me. I have always wished I could, but nothing but a stick figure comes out. I can almost do 3-dimensional, like a house, but it's very cartoonish. Wish I could to more with that. :( I want to draw/paint so bad, but it's not within my talent.
I have to say that I have a flair for writing creatively. Not stories, but little poems.

It isn't that you don't have the talent, but that you are stuck trying to draw like a 1st grader ... the way schools wanted you to.
Give the book Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain a try. Things may change!
That's an excellent suggestion. - Another good book

is Drawing with Children. It sounds like it's focused on children, but it also works for adults who need some help getting started unleashing their inner artist. It's available on Amazon. Get the later edition; it's better.

And I am going to use them with I make the bird-themed jewelry. (We have a lot of birds in our back yard!) Isn't it funny how adults feel silly when we want to color? I had the thought the other day that sometime when we are about 30 or so, we somehow just decide that adults "shouldn't play." Well, I have decided to PLAY! I do draw, albeit not too well, and I have decided to just go for it and have fun! Coloring fans of the world, unite! I'm betting that if you try some of the Dover books, you will be amazed, if you would rather color than freehand. Besides the Dover website posted above, go to Amazon and enter "coloring books for adults." There are many! Have fun!

Does anyone remember painting by numbers? I loved doing it and did an Emmett Kelly one that I loved. I just did a quick Google search and see that kits are still available. If I could find another Emmett Kelly, I would do it again. :)

Silly (or Not So Silly) Dream...Have One?Oct 19, 2010Do you have a silly dream of doing something totally different with your career or life?
Lately, my husband and I have somewhat seriously been talking about opening a mexican food burrito/taco shop. We have great recipes that are relatively simple and inexpensive, and would love to just open up a very small shop that handles only takeout orders for a few types of burritos and/or tacos, rice and beans. Something small with the BEST food around, even though not fancy.

HOBBY = BUSINESSMar 30, 2011I read the post below about the lady whose family cook book is getting published, and also once in a while see someone posting their stuff on Esty. That's amazing.
I was wondering if anyone has taken a hobby and turned it into a lucrative side job? I am barely making ends meet! As soon as I get my check it's gone. Thank goodness for Angelfood ministries!

HOBBY LOBBY WON!Jun 30, 2014Supreme Court states corporations cannot be required to provide contraception coverage. YES!!!!
The protests outside are all young people and they act like the ruling would deny birth control for everyone. When are these kids going to get an education? They want it, they can pay for it just like we used to have to pay for it. I'm so glad. The government does not have the right to force us to pay for contraceptives, especially those that are no longer able to have kids or e ...
Hobby Lobby . . . AgainJul 29, 2014What is it exactly that HL wants? Claim they cannot cover certain BC because they cause abortions, now they fire a lady because she is pregnant. HL is religiousing itself into a corner from which they will never be able to get out. If real people were not affected by their absurdity, it would be downright funny, but sadly real people are affected. For the sake of the employee I do hope this is an allegation and that she has not been fired for being pregnant, but if ...
Boycott Hobby Lobby?Sep 21, 2012So, this company is owned and operated by people who have certain beliefs regarding the Obamacare mandate regarding abortion - and filed suit to be granted the same exemption that has already been granted to a Catholic organization.

Second, I'm not stupid enough to ...

The Big Picture Regarding The Hobby Lobby DecisionJul 01, 2014I think to a lot of people, the Supreme Court's decision in the Hobby Lobby case is largely about an overhaul of corporations' rights to control employees, basically a first step to more control over their lives. Sure, it's about the birth control issue, but the "big picture" about the decision is this opening of the door to who knows what is next from big business? The same people who are saying they don't want government to come between people and their doctor s ...

I Am A Very Happy Lady, If I Can Do This, So CanJun 17, 2014I am expecting company this summer. I do not cook very well so I was trying to think what can I do other than crockpot dishes. I made a delicious one yesterday, all things I bought at Publix, grilled chicken, artichokes, mozzarella, garlic spread, spinach leafs, and my friend and I had that for lunch. Silly Girl - Kid Friendly Jan 26, 2011Silly Girl - I was wondering if you tried your crockpot yet. What did you make? Did it save some time for you and your son?
I've never done it myself, but I know people who actually put the crockpot together the night before and stick in the frig until the morning when they go to work so they can cut some time in the morning.
I've even heard of people making breakfast (like oatmeal) by setting it up at night and then have breakfast ready in the morning. ...
