We've had lots of discussions about Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, nations of Africa, nations of south america, etc. Things are happening all over the world that are disturbing. If YOU got to make the decisions, what would (or wouldn't) we be doing about these things.
Would we leave Afghanistan to the taliban, et al? Would be leave Iraq to its own devices? Would be help the starving people in africa? Would we fight the politics of the "blood diamonds"? Would we open all of the borders to all comers? Would we ...?
You can see where I'm going with this...what would YOU have us do?
1) Leave Afghanistan. We don't have enough support over there.
A. Obama did set a date, but it’s not written in stone and it shouldn’t have been publicized.
2) Set a final withdrawal date for Iraq within the next year. All troops leave by then.
A. There is a set date for Iraq and it is next year.
3) Allow unlimited immigration to Afghan and Iraqi refugees. If they want to come, come on. We've created massive war zones in their countries and it's the least we can do. An expedited citizenship track for citizens of both these countries. Have the military make free flights available to them.
A. Our country cannot support more people without sponsorship, support, jobs, etc. Plus, you are opening the door to terrorists, giving them a free pass for more deaths of our citizens.
4) The starving in Africa. Send a large number of farming experts over there to teach and encourage sustainable agriculture. Additionally, put money towards developing crops that are heat and drought resistant. Divert a certain extra percent of bumper crops their way.
A. Been there, done that. We still send food aid plus millions, if not billions, of dollars per year. There are starving in America that need our attention, too and they should come first.
5) Provide a simple path to citizenship for current illegals in the US. Deporting them is costly, lengthy and inefficient. Provide the clean, easy path to becoming a citizen so they become a tax paying citizen.
A. Hopefully, no way will that happen. Been there and done that or don’t you remember? It just encouraged more illegals to come here. That’s why we have the problem we have.
6) Provide billions in stimulus to clean energy, consisting mostly of wind and solar energy, but also providing funding for nuclear power. Additionally, provide funding for electric car/battery development to ensure a clean energy future, or at the very least, energy dependent on ourselves as opposed to other countries.
A. Nuclear is still not safe enough. As another poster said in an earlier, battery powered vehicles still depend on electricity. Does not solve the problem. Also, most citizens of this country cannot afford solar and it wouldn’t work for those living in the most northern states.
7) Take a red pen to under performing, or wasteful government sponsored programs. I know there is a massive amount of waste and we need to get people in there that are not afraid to cut out the waste. I don't want to cut services in which many people need them, but I do want to cut waste such as paying people that aren't doing their job to the fullest they can or programs where it doesn't make financial sense to continue them because of lack of participation.
A. This is one item I agree with.
8) Provide billions in transportation stimulus. Besides clean energy, America depends on getting cars off the road. Funding the construction or expansion of mass transit in large cities is vital in creating vibrant, urban centers.
A. Mass transportation is already subsidized by the government. Where does the money go? Certainly not into a lot of upgrades. What about the rural areas? There are no buses, trains, or even taxis. Do we just let them languish without jobs as it has been for decades?
9) Continue to repair foreign relations. Our reputation is getting better, but we still have a long ways to go when to comes to repairing America's image. We have to remember that a pompous attitude doesn't make us friends, or get us far. In order to ensure a prosperous and bright future, we have to have allies in emerging markets and countries.
A. How do you propose we do that? Most countries hate us with a passion and it will never change.
Lastly, not to sound hard-hearted, but don't you think countries should start solving their own problems; i.e., food, health issues, jobs, etc.? We are not the world's keeper, although most countries think we are.
The line-item veto and earmarks are two items that should be top priority. Unless an earmark doesn't help the majority of a reps district, it should be stricken from the bill it's attached to. We should also LIMIT the size of government, not INCREASE it like each and every president has done. Get rid of overlapping government agencies.
