What is your "dream" position

Posted: Jun 30, 2010

We've had lots of discussions about Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, nations of Africa, nations of south america, etc. Things are happening all over the world that are disturbing. If YOU got to make the decisions, what would (or wouldn't) we be doing about these things.
Would we leave Afghanistan to the taliban, et al? Would be leave Iraq to its own devices? Would be help the starving people in africa? Would we fight the politics of the "blood diamonds"? Would we open all of the borders to all comers? Would we ...?

You can see where I'm going with this...what would YOU have us do?

Here's some quick thoughts of mine - Anon

Here's some quick thoughts of mine:

1) Leave Afghanistan. We don't have enough support over there.

2) Set a final withdrawal date for Iraq within the next year. All troops leave by then.

How many days can we continue to fight loosing wars? Get our troops out, get them home, and quit putting money into something that isn't being won.

3) Allow unlimited immigration to Afghan and Iraqi refugees. If they want to come, come on. We've created massive war zones in their countries and it's the least we can do. An expedited citizenship track for citizens of both these countries. Have the military make free flights available to them.

4) The starving in Africa. Send a large number of farming experts over there to teach and encourage sustainable agriculture. Additionally, put money towards developing crops that are heat and drought resistant. Divert a certain extra percent of bumper crops their way.

5) Provide a simple path to citizenship for current illegals in the US. Deporting them is costly, lengthy and inefficient. Provide the clean, easy path to becoming a citizen so they become a tax paying citizen.

6) Provide billions in stimulus to clean energy, consisting mostly of wind and solar energy, but also providing funding for nuclear power. Additionally, provide funding for electric car/battery development to ensure a clean energy future, or at the very least, energy dependent on ourselves as opposed to other countries.

7) Take a red pen to under performing, or wasteful government sponsored programs. I know there is a massive amount of waste and we need to get people in there that are not afraid to cut out the waste. I don't want to cut services in which many people need them, but I do want to cut waste such as paying people that aren't doing their job to the fullest they can or programs where it doesn't make financial sense to continue them because of lack of participation.

8) Provide billions in transportation stimulus. Besides clean energy, America depends on getting cars off the road. Funding the construction or expansion of mass transit in large cities is vital in creating vibrant, urban centers.

9) Continue to repair foreign relations. Our reputation is getting better, but we still have a long ways to go when to comes to repairing America's image. We have to remember that a pompous attitude doesn't make us friends, or get us far. In order to ensure a prosperous and bright future, we have to have allies in emerging markets and countries.

There's plenty more to be done, that's just my thoughts right off the bat.

Holy Cow! - maybe OP should have mentioned funding

While you may want to do all those things, how would you realistically pay for them? In an economy already suffering 10% unemployment, you want to bring in millions more? While there is government waste, I don't think you're going to find enough to fund all that. And an open border policy will just add millions of people to the work force that is already the hardest hit in the economy.

You didn't notice the first two points. If you just save the cost of Afghan and Iraq war, you will be having more than enough to support everything OP said afterward.

1)      Leave Afghanistan. We don't have enough support over there.

A. Obama did set a date, but it’s not written in stone and it shouldn’t have been publicized.

2) Set a final withdrawal date for Iraq within the next year. All troops leave by then.

A. There is a set date for Iraq and it is next year.

3) Allow unlimited immigration to Afghan and Iraqi refugees. If they want to come, come on. We've created massive war zones in their countries and it's the least we can do. An expedited citizenship track for citizens of both these countries. Have the military make free flights available to them.

A. Our country cannot support more people without sponsorship, support, jobs, etc. Plus, you are opening the door to terrorists, giving them a free pass for more deaths of our citizens.

4) The starving in Africa. Send a large number of farming experts over there to teach and encourage sustainable agriculture. Additionally, put money towards developing crops that are heat and drought resistant. Divert a certain extra percent of bumper crops their way.

A.  Been there, done that. We still  send food aid plus millions, if not billions, of dollars per year.  There are starving in America that need our attention, too and they should come first.

 5) Provide a simple path to citizenship for current illegals in the US. Deporting them is costly, lengthy and inefficient. Provide the clean, easy path to becoming a citizen so they become a tax paying citizen.
A.  Hopefully, no way will that happen. Been there and done that or don’t you remember? It just encouraged more illegals to come here.  That’s why we have the problem we have.

6) Provide billions in stimulus to clean energy, consisting mostly of wind and solar energy, but also providing funding for nuclear power. Additionally, provide funding for electric car/battery development to ensure a clean energy future, or at the very least, energy dependent on ourselves as opposed to other countries.
A.  Nuclear is still not safe enough. As another poster said in an earlier, battery powered vehicles still depend on electricity. Does not solve the problem. Also, most citizens of this country cannot afford solar and it wouldn’t work for those living in the most northern states.

A.  This is one item I agree with.

8) Provide billions in transportation stimulus. Besides clean energy, America depends on getting cars off the road. Funding the construction or expansion of mass transit in large cities is vital in creating vibrant, urban centers.

A.  Mass transportation is already subsidized by the government.  Where does the money go? Certainly not into a lot of upgrades.  What about the rural areas? There are no buses, trains, or even taxis. Do we just let them languish without jobs as it has been for decades?

9) Continue to repair foreign relations. Our reputation is getting better, but we still have a long ways to go when to comes to repairing America's image. We have to remember that a pompous attitude doesn't make us friends, or get us far. In order to ensure a prosperous and bright future, we have to have allies in emerging markets and countries.
A. How do you propose we do that? Most countries hate us with a passion and it will never change.

Lastly, not to sound hard-hearted, but don't you think countries should start solving their own problems; i.e., food, health issues, jobs, etc.? We are not the world's keeper, although most countries think we are.

The line-item veto and earmarks are two items that should be top priority. Unless an earmark doesn't help the majority of a reps district, it should be stricken from the bill it's attached to. We should also LIMIT the size of government, not INCREASE it like each and every president has done.  Get rid of overlapping government agencies.

a lot of money. Where you gonna get the money to pay for all of this?

As far as taxes go.... - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I would like a flat tax and get rid of this ridiculously complicated tax system we currently have. They have literally made it to where crooks and dishonest people can get out of paying their fair share by creating loopholes. If we had a flat tax, that would end that. You make x amount of money, you pay x amount of taxes. End of story....pretty cut and dry.

I agree and I'm glad someone else - brought this up

[ In Reply To ..]
Pros: simple, encourages investment, less bureaucracy, more money for the people, no more loopholes.

Not to mention:

Higher revenues for the government, as it would eliminate gaping loopholes through with large corporations keep huge sums of money

Eliminates estate taxes, more money for survivers

Eliminates double taxation

Reduces the need for "tax shelters," due to the transparacy of the new, flat rate

Ditto. Why is it considered ridiculous way of taxation? - Backwards Typist

I'll answer that (although 'sm' did make the point) let me take it a step further -- because even government employees, IRS included, won't be able to get out of paying taxes, that's why.

Exactly.... - sm

look at all the politicians who didn't pay all they should have, etc. They claimed confusion and didn't realize they had to pay....which I suspect is total BS but will give them the benefit of the doubt. Make it easy and simple and there will be no confusion about what you owe the IRS. I know it will hurt accountants and H&R Block but it will also save us from paying 200 plus bucks for someone to do our taxes for us. That is always a plus. ;)
What 200 plus bucks? We pay around $400 plus - Backwards Typist

because DH is self-employed. It used to be higher when both of us were self-employed.

But that's besides the point. Some didn't claim confusion. Some blamed it on their accountant, which is a crock because an accountant will only plug numbers in with documents and what they are told. Otherwise, they're in the dark, too.

Parenting Advice In A DreamMay 18, 2011
I had an interesting dream last night.  My granddaughter was running toward a lake and not listening to my warnings to stop, as little kids will do.  It was very scary, and I was unable to get there before she fell in.  I fished her out, and she was okay but frightened.  Then a lady who was sitting at a picnic table nearby said, "You shouldn't say, 'No, stop!, Stop' because a child won't respond to that.  You should say instead something like, 'L ...

I am a Trump supporter because I think the established political system is corrupt. It has been said that a lot of new voters who are in support of Trump as well as "Reagan Democrats" ...
