Same old turkey dinner every year.

Posted: Nov 13, 2012

Every year I make turkey, dressing, sweet potatoes, green bean casserole, deviled eggs, cranberry sauce, homemade bread and pumpkin pie.  The daughters will bring another dessert or two.  These are all traditional foods that my family enjoys, but I am so bored with it.  I need some new, fresh, and different ideas.  Even if I did something different with the beans or potatoes.  Maybe a fruit salad?

I still want some of the traditional foods, but does anyone have any ideas to change things up a litte?

acorn squash - ideas

i just saw a recipe for quinoa stuffed acorn squash. looked delicious. and of course very healthy.
or you can just take your usuals and put a twist on them. for instance if u make sweet potato with all the sugary stuff, make sweet potato latkes instead. smoked anduoille dressing with squash. i did a homemade scratch green bean casserole one year. it Rocked! cranberry chutney. i serve a salmon/fish plate. and my kids are vegans....raw pumpkin pie is my new dish this year.

sometimes done on the grill if the weather is appropriate...kind of fits with the traditional Thanksgiving dinner, which included "maze." I made fruit salad last year too, or a frozen cream cheese log type thing. It compliments the turkey quite well.

MMm, mm, good. Creamy. We also make creamed pearl onions, sort of tradition. We also use garlic mashed potatoes instead of regular. Hey, those instant mashed potatoes are pretty good. We just sort of mix them in with the regular potatoes. I make a side of broccoli with american cheese melted in.

Judy's pretzel salad... - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
Look it up on All Recipes or Pintrest. It is soooo good.

My immediate family goes to Florida every year, so we forgo Thanksgiving altogether. I will make a turkey dinner at some point when we get back, but we always go out for seafood or something different. One time we went to an indoor water park and my husband bought sliced turkey breast, premade stuffing and cranberries and made sanwiches and pumpkin donuts for dessert. We had an absolute blast and no one was stressed out. We have plenty of time for that at Christmas time.

changing my menu - found this potato

cheesy potatoes with cheddar, housemade cream of mushroom, bacon, and chives.
much better.
skipping the sweet potato mash to include a pan of roasted root vegs.

brussel sprout/asparagus recipe - sue

[ In Reply To ..]
I saw this recipe in a Sam's Club Holiday guide and tried it last year. I also heard a TG recipe show on NPR that was talking about how we should bring more fall veggies into our traditional meals because that's what is abundant this time of the year.

Prepare brussel sprouts by halving, cutting away the little stem and outer leaf.

Prepare asparagus by breaking off ends and cutting to about 1 inch long.

Chop one red onion.

Bacon (see below)

Sautee onion in butter. Add brussel sprouts and asparagus. Then add about 2 tbsp (more if you like) crispy bacon pieces (I used low fat bacon in a jar and it was fine). Sautee until tender or desired doneness (about a half hour), stirring every so often.

If you want to make it more healthy, the butter spray works, but you have to be careful and keep spraying and stir more often to be sure not to brown/burn veggies.

Which way do you make the sweet potatoes? - Mashed or chunks?

[ In Reply To ..]
Am I correct you are talking about the orange tubers, aka yams? Just about everyone I know makes them mashed with marshmallows (sorry, but no thanks). I cut them in chunks, baked with butter, brown sugar, orange juice, and brandy. You asked about fruit salad. Personally, I love having fruit on the table to offset all the carbs, so I would say yes to the fruit salad. This year, I am going to try a new-found recipe for cranberry-peach sauce.

1/3 cup fresh or frozen cranberries, thawed and chopped

Core apples, leaving bottoms intact. Peel top third of each apple; place in a 5-qt. slow cooker. Combine the cranberries, brown sugar, walnuts, cinnamon and nutmeg; spoon into apples.

Cover and cook on low for 4-5 hours or until apples are tender. Serve with whipped cream or ice cream if desired. Yield: 5 servings.

Anybody Every Spatchcocked A Turkey Before?Jan 19, 2017
I have about a 12 pound turkey in my freezer.  My hubbie gets a turkey at thanksgiving and ham at Christmas from his work.  I didn't cook the turkey because we went to family for Thanksgiving.  I was looking at the turkey in the freezer this morning and was wondering about spatchcocking it.  I've never tried this, but I saw this on the cooking channel before and I think my turkey is the right size to do it.   Anyone have any luck with it?  I'm thinki ...

Washing A TurkeyNov 20, 2014
We got going on a discussion below about Thanksgiving disasters, and the conversation got to washing turkeys before cooking them. This is not a good practice. You can spread more salmonella and other bacteria washing raw poultry. All it does is splatter rawness in the sink, on the faucets, on the counters, on your clothes, etc. Cooking to the proper temperature (165 degrees at the fattest part of the breast) kills anything you are concerned about. ...

Whats For Dinner?Apr 24, 2010
With a big skillet of Spanish rice in progress, I'm gettin' a Texas-size hankering for some beefy, cheesey stuffed bell peppers.  It never has made much sense to me to put rice over rice, so I don't want to use rice in the stuffing mix.  Does anyone know if cheese by itself can serve as the only recipe binder?  I'm not crazy about the texture eggs produce either and do not plan to use bread crumbs.  I like the middle of the peppers to be on the ...

Teens Who Only Like Turkey, No Veggies/smNov 19, 2012
I have been preparing for weeks for Thanksgiving. Have 4 teenaged grandkids who will only try the turkey. They usually only like mac and cheese or pizza. Should I include a homemade version of mac and cheese with my meal? There is no way I will go with the packaged stuff they usually eat. It's either that or to see them with a little turkey only on their plates. Hopefully they will change over the years. My menu includes turkey, stuffing and all the veggies one could imagine for the grownup ...

Turkey Experts - Do You Prefer HEN Or TOM TurkeysNov 22, 2010
This is a really dumb question, but since we had always gone to my sister’s house for Thanksgiving (she cooked the turkey and we brought all the rest of the stuff), I personally have not made a turkey in something like 15 years.  But it was getting harder and harder to get everyone in one place, with all the kids being adults with their own families, in-laws to visit, etc.  Then we do the whole thing again at Christmas.  So this year, instead of having the whole family at o ...

Unique Turkey/Stuffing LeftoverNov 13, 2012
Okay, so I'm posting ahead of time, but I just saw something interesting on the show "The Chew," the food talk show with Mario Batali, Michael Symon, Daphne (Dr. Oz's daughter) and Carla. They took leftover stuffing and turkey, stuffed it in red peppers and baked it, then threw gruyere cheese on top and broiled it till cheese was melted.  They cut the bottoms off the peppers just enough so there was no hole, but the pepper could stand up in a baking dish. I thought that sou ...

Should Your Turkey Be Taxed For Climate Change? Nov 25, 2015
As Americans prepare for their Thanksgiving Day feasts, there's an issue on the horizon that could make that turkey more expensive: taxing meat to reduce climate change. But many consumers aren't aware of the link between their dinner plates and climate change, the re ...

I live in the south.  How does Thanksgiving dinner differ from the northern states to the sourthern ones?  From east to west?  Here in the south we have the usual turkey like everyone does.  We have the cornbread dressing (stuffing), chicken and dumplings, veggies, no steamed ones though, we don't eat much steamed veggies around here.  They are boiled with meat seasoning such as bacon or ham, etc.  We have the broccoli casserole.  We also have baked ham.& ...

Any Tips On Using Cold Water To Defrost A 17-pound Turkey?Nov 17, 2011
